Finding Our Depth

Each of us finds depth for ourselves.

Sometimes our depth journeys take us in the same direction. We find ourselves exploring depth in similar places, and are able to encourage and support each other. Many people have assisted me, and I have assisted many people. You and I, though, each have a unique thirst for depth. While I cannot tell you where to find depth, I might be able to help you become a wiser or stronger explorer.

Depth is with us. Depth is all around us. While we may feel it more tangibly at particular times or in specific places, depth is always with us.

I often sense depth in silence. The stillness inside a great cathedral, or the sound of the surf along the beach. It is easy for me to recognize depth there, and I need to remember that there is depth in the noise and distractions of the everyday.

We may grow accustomed to the rhythm of depth we create in our lives. We may have scheduled times for depth each day or each week. It can be a challenge when depth interrupts our plans and catches us by surprise. Depth has ways of getting our attention.

We may be in the middle of a typical day or an ordinary week when depth becomes so clear that it knocks us out of our plans and preparation. The depth of a tragedy or the depth of a great loss, the depth of courage or the depths of love, breaks into the order we have constructed.

When we were not really looking for it, our depth finds us.

Wise explorers not only learn how to seek well, they are open to the possibilities of finding some of the depth they seek.

Where are you seeking depth?

How are you becoming a wiser explorer?
