I am a member of a liturgical church. When we get together we remind ourselves of our shared story, and we share a meal.

We surround ourselves with signs and symbols that help us remember who we are. We have banners and paintings, pictures in stained glass, music, kneeling and the sign of the cross, and a basket for the food locker. There is one symbol that can be easy to overlook, even though it is my favorite.

We remind ourselves of our story with fire.

We use candles every time we get together. The flames of our candles remind us of our story; the burning bush and the pillar of fire, the light of the world, and of how our hearts burn within us.

We are surrounded and infused by the Depth that draws us in and lights the fire within us. We burn with its passion, and its fire purifies us.

Each week we light the candles and remember the fire in our hearts.

We live in a place where there are brushfires, but we are not exactly fire and brimstone people. It is more like the fire of sitting and watching a fireplace. The flames remind us of our deepest selves, and burn away all the false things that hold us back.

The Depth reminds us that fire is warm and powerful. There are challenges, and there is also joy. The Depth sheds light in dark places and ignites our passion.

I sit quietly and listen to the silence. The flame in my heart, which may have dwindled to embers, is reignited and encouraged by the Depth. The heat and the light grow in the cold darkness, and are reflected in the Depth.

What lights your heart on fire?

How do you remind yourself about who you really are?
