I belong to a liturgical church. Each time we get together, we remember part of our story and we share a meal. Our liturgical year begins with a season called Advent.

Advent is a season of anticipation and preparation. Advent is about finding the Sacred in the Everyday. Advent is about finding the time. Advent grows and gains momentum during the weeks before Christmas.

The story we share begins in darkness, before Light comes into the world. Our whole story is filled with people finding light in the darkness.

There are people who live in deep darkness and see a great light. There are parts where people who have been kept in the dark for as long as they can remember emerge into brightness.

The earliest parts of our story are lit by flames. There are burning bushes and pillars of fire, tongues of fire as well as torches and lamps, campfires, stars, even flaming swords and coming to bring fire to the earth.

Our story continues to grow. The stars are still part of it, and we use candles to remember the lights that have shone in the darkness in the past. Now our light also glows from electric bulbs and computer screens.

The story we share is about finding light in the darkness.

We begin in deep darkness, and light comes into the world.

Each of us finds our own light. We see light, and darkness, in unique ways. Each of us discovers our light, and we share what we have with the people around us.

We anticipate the light which we have not yet found. We prepare for the day when our light will be brighter than it is today.

How will you look for your light today?

Where do you find light in the darkness?
