LAST week I posted an amusing piece about a UK bar owner who applied to turn his premises into The Church of the 400 Rabbits to point out the absurdity of churches being allowed to open during England’s latest COVID-19 lockdown restrictions while pubs and restaurants were ordered to shut.
Today I learn that two American pastor – Rob McCoy, of Godspeak Calvary Chapel in San Diego and Jurgen Matthesius, of Awaken Church – have decided to rebrand their churches as “strip clubs” after a San Diego judge ruled that such clubs can reopen but churches should stay closed.
Last month, San Diego’s Superior Court Judge Joel R Wohlfeil ordered a temporary restraining order on the state’s cease-and-desist order to keep strip clubs closed, saying that strip clubs must be allowed to provide live entertainment to adults.
In what Christianity Daily describes as “a funny comeback to outsmart the system” McCoy decided re-open his church as a “strip club, a move aped by Matthesius, who renamed his church the “Now Awaken Family Friendly Strip Club” that will:
Strip the devil of his hold, power and authority over people’s lives.
McCoy said:
This is insane! Cannot America see the hypocrisy and the stupidity of all this? You’re being lied to.
His congregation applauded as he declared:
We are finished with your tyranny and we are going to enjoy Thanksgiving and we’re going to worship God. Open your churches!
McCoy then proceeded to remove his tie as a “striptease” – a move applauded by his congregation, some of whom raised $1 bills.
