This video, announcing this collegiate conference in February 2013, is beautifully done and deeply inspiring. I appreciate Al Mohler for many reasons; one of the most important is that he has done careful thinking on global cities and how they relate to the spread of the gospel. His co-speaker at the Resolute conference, John Piper, has done a great deal on this front (in case you hadn’t heard of, I don’t know, this gasoline on the fire of the contemporary missions movement). Whether you... Read more
Amy Julia Becker recently linked to the story of a couple named Greg and Tesney who adopted a son, Kirill, from Russia. I would say the story of his condition when in Russia was “heartbreaking,” but I would not be doing that word justice. Here’s what four-year-old Kirill looked like when the couple met him, according to Tesney (see picture at left): We heard footsteps and our son was ushered through the door. He was so tiny. I kept reminding... Read more
I recently heard about a Louisville event on the global pro-life cause with John Ensor, noted pro-life advocate (author of this short and helpful book). It’s taking place at Immanuel Baptist Church on this coming Saturday, January 19, 2013. Here’s some information from IBC: The Sanctity of Life Saturday event is designed to expose Pastors, lay leaders, and all members of area congregations to gospel centered avenues to support the Pro-Life cause. Our time together will feature preaching from Evangelical Author... Read more
Union University just issued a press release indicating that long-time president David S. Dockery will transition to a chancellorship in 2013 or 2014. Here’s a bit: “I am hopeful and prayerful for a good, smooth, joyful and positive transition,” Dockery said. “God has blessed the work of our hands and manifested his favor to this university time and time again during these past 17 years. I am confident that we will continue to see God’s grace made known to Union... Read more
I’m so thankful to see this. I think it’s right on the money. Programs like the one described in this video remind us of the need to be involved in this world as agents of change, gospel change. This is true of us individually, and it should be true of local churches who find ways to reach out to the needy around them to promote the gospel. Angela Patton’s work is vital, and it reminds me of Chuck Colson’s creation... Read more
In light of the Louie Giglio fiasco, some evangelicals have argued that Christians need to cheer up and trust God. It’s always true that we need to trust God. I was encouraged, for example, by the content Jared Wilson posted on this subject (Jared always encourages me with his Christ-driven material). Our Trinitarian God can never be thwarted. He is sovereign and unstoppable. Jesus will return for us. These are the truths that inspire, comfort, and embolden us. There has... Read more
This is the toughest–and most hotly debated–question among modern evangelicals interested in some level in Christian history today. Should we read the works of men who held slaves? Can we profit from them? I come to this issue with my own perspective and background, those which God gave me. It was helpful for me to see the reasoned and gracious thoughts of a young African-American pastor-theologian named Anthony Carter on this subject. Carter is happily reformed but aware of the... The news of pastor Louie Giglio being pulled from the upcoming inauguration ceremony of President Barack Obama has traveled far and wide. Giglio was originally invited, it seems, due to his laudable work to combat sex trafficking; he was apparently asked to step down by the White House because the homosexual lobby found a 15-year-old sermon in which he spoke of homosexuality as a sin and encouraged gays and lesbians to be changed through Jesus Christ. As it should have,... Read more
A few months ago, I wrote a review of David Platt’s Radical Together. I strongly commended the book. Here’s one major strength: its exaltation of and dependence on a sovereign, awesome God: Platt wisely grounds human action in the sovereignty of God. There has been a great deal of discussion in certain circles over whether certain strands of theology kill missions. Is embracing God’s comprehensive sovereignty like a nail gun to the head when it comes to evangelism and discipleship? Not... Read more
