Dawah is an Arabic word which means to invite someone to embrace Islam. When Malcolm X went to the Mosque for the first time, he said he was upset that the Mosque still had empty space. Malcolm X thought to himself: how can the Mosque still be empty when the streets are filled with brainwashed black brothers and sisters utilizing profanity, fighting each other, using drugs, and engaging in a litany of other self-destructive activities?  Subsequently, Malcolm X began giving Dawah in Detroit’s ghetto’s talking to gangsters, prostitutes, drug addicts, and inviting them to the Mosque.
“The Black Souls Matter Dawah Workshops”,  by Hakeem Muhammad are aimed at reinvigorating dawah in black communities in the tradition of Malcolm X. At the center of these workshops, is the premise that cannot be successful in giving dawah in the black community without a thorough understanding of black religion. Black religion encompasses the theological inquires black folks have as a result of 400 years of slavery. These dawah workshops will empower black Muslims with the tools to respond to Afrocentric/Black Orientalist Critics of Al-Islam, provide an Islamic deconstruction of the theology of the Black Hebrew Israelite, and other groups who challenge the legitimacy of Islam in the black community.
