9 Tarot Questions photo by Lilith Dorsey. All rights reserved.

Every single tarot reading is different. It’s like a mini-relationship between you, the tarot reader, and the cards. In order to get the best reading possible there are certainly some questions you can and should ask to make the process go more smoothly. Many of these issues I have covered in the Divination Space Stations segments on this blog, featuring interviews with notable Pagans such as Dorothy Morrison and Deborah Lipp. Here, however is a short list of thing you may or may not have thought to ask.

  1. How long have you been reading tarot? Most professional readers agree that tarot is a lifelong study. Each reading presents new challenges and relationships, between the cards and the specific situation. Not that I wouldn’t get a reading from a beginner, but again similar to any other profession, someone who has just joined the ranks will have a different perspective than a seasoned veteran.
  2. How much do you charge? This is more of a practical question, but it is always good to be prepared and the price of readings can range from free into the hundreds of dollars.
  3. How did you get started reading? A person’s story is always important.

  4. What deck or decks do you read with? Why? A recent online search returned 3,353 different tarot decks. That is a lot to choose from. When doing a reading I usually offer clients a choice of several different decks, not 3,000, but ones from different paths and traditions so they can pick the images and symbolism that they feel most comfortable with.
  5. How long are your readings usually? This is another question where the answers can run the gamut. One of my godchildren offers simple quick readings with only a few cards, and I heard of one reader the other day that takes over 3 hours to complete a reading. All things are possible under the sun, the moon and the stars( or should i say the cups, the coins and the wands.)
  6. Will you allow recording of my reading? Even if the reader won’t let you use audio or video recording, consider taking detailed notes so you can remember what is said. If time allows run the notes by your reader, I once had a client hear only what they wanted to hear, instead of what I had said.
  7. How many questions can I ask? This is another practical question. Some of my clients come in with a long list of questions that they have been compiling for some time. If this is your situation it’s best to have a reader that will help you through each of these areas.
  8. Do you do spellwork or ritual work if I need additional help? Tarot is a very useful psychic tool that can help people in many different ways. Most often I find it gives plenty of solutions to the problems at hand. That said, some people do need additional help. Some of the worst readings I have ever experienced were from people who laid out a difficulty, and then didn’t give guidance as to how to navigate it.
  9. What’s the best way to contact you if I need another reading? Like most humans, psychics are busy people. Almost every reader I know will drop a client if they call repeatedly, or at ungoddessly hours.

Tarot readings can provide direction and insight into your life in all situations. In order to have the best experience you should come prepared. For those who would like to schedule a tarot reading with me, Lilith Dorsey, please email me at [email protected]

There is a lot to be said about the subject of Tarot. It is a highly artful and complex system of divination. It began as a game,… a wondrous game encompassing art, faith and symbol. When I first began studying the tarot, I would do what I’m sure many of you reading this did, performed several readings for myself and my friends, and then ran to get the book. Flipping frantically to page 23 or whatever, I would read the diagnosis and try and apply these words to the situation. This happened over and over again. Lather, rinse, and repeat as they say. I had one friend who just read the words on the bottom of the cards in the Thoth deck and that was the reading.

Tarot can be like that however, it can be that one word, and also the thousand other words associated with the card. One of my favorite references for Tarot is the Tarot Dictionary and Compendium by Jana Riley.  In it she compares the meanings from several different decks and interpretations. When available she also lists meanings for reversals. My advice is to learn as many of the meanings upside down and backwards pardon the pun, when you are a beginning student of the tarot. Once you have a working grasp of these meanings you will be able to then pick out which ones are useful in the situation. You have to walk before you can run. Obviously not every meaning is going to be helpful, but once you learn them you will be on your way to understanding how these delicate meanings manifest in the readings you have before you.

In certain situations I do pay attention to reversals, but I am much more sensitive to the cards I see before me. Let’s face it, certain cards carry with them negative meanings and situations. There is always a scene in a bad soap opera about someone going to a psychic and getting the Death card. In my experience the Death card means a drastic transformation that is very rarely a physical death. The cards I am actually speaking of here are the swords cards. To be more specific about it the 3,5,7,8,9, and 10 of swords. Some people refer to the situations and connections these cards make with the general reading as ill-dignified. If you reading is full of these swords cards, and by full I mean more than half in your spread, everything will be affected. Usually the reading will be effected in a negative way. There are things you can do in these situations, but success will be a struggle.

I’m sure many people will disagree with me about this. I would love to hear about your thoughts and experiences with Tarot and reversals, please share in the comments below.  For those wishing to get a tarot reading from me please e-mail [email protected] and for more information about Tarot and other forms of divination check out our Divination Space Station series of interviews here on this blog.

Meaning and use of Cowrie Shells photo by Daniel Oines. Text added. Licensed under CC 2.0.
Meaning and use of Cowrie Shells photo by Daniel Oines. Text added. Licensed under CC 2.0.

This is a story of a simple shell that is used as money, a tribute, and a way to know the future. Some historians believe the Cowrie shell was one of the first systems of money used, and it’s importance is wide reaching. Fertility, ease of use, and blessings of all kinds can be found in this little package. These are the prized treasures of our ancestors, and we can still benefit from them today. Cowries are used everywhere from Ancient Egypt to New Orleans Voodoo and Hoodoo.

Been All Around the World….

In Ancient Egypt Cowrie shells were prized as great magickal tools. Certain cultures believe that the magic comes from its resemblance to a half-open eye. Other groups see a similarity between the Cowrie and female genitalia, and consequently they have become symbolic of fertility. The age old issue of love walking hand in hand with money comes to light again. Mesolithic jewelry in Scotland features Cowrie shells, according to Jane McIntosh in Handbook to Life in Prehistoric Europe. Clearly their powerful importance goes back thousands of years.

From the Watery Depths…Comes the Cowrie Shell

The shell from the watery depths is actually part of a tropical marine mollusk. It forms spiral shapes evoking its own natural magick in a simple yet complex way. John Scarborough’s Medical and Biological Terminologies theorizes that the word Cowrie is an alteration of the Hindi word Kauri. In Africa the Cyprea Moneta was the species most widely used for financial exchange.

There is an interesting post called “The Gift of the Cowrie” by Latranei Gaibole. It speaks of the connection between the cowrie shell and a mother goddess called “Mote,” whose description seems to evoke the divinity Mami Wata. During ritual Mami Wata appears as the primal feminine, both powerful and strong. These shells come from the ancient depths of the waters of Mother Earth and bless us with their sacred gifts.

Devotees of African Traditional Religions will recognize these blessed shells as the divine tools of Ifa. For those who are unfamiliar with these practices it can be a bit complicated. Ifa is the word used to refer to the deity in charge of divination, the system of divination, and even sometimes the religion as a whole. The ritual to tell the future involves throwing the cowrie shells on a tray and recording the series of patterns that begin to emerge. Each pattern corresponds to a specific answer.

For additional information about Ifa readings and Orunmila, check out Divination Space Station with Awo Robert Ogbe Di. While the book Diffusion of Cowries and Egyptian Culture by M.D.W. Jeffries talks about cowries and cosmology saying that “Among the Ewe is the story that cowries were found in a basket sent from Heaven by (the divinity) Mawu “In New Orleans Voodoo the shells are often used for offering, blessing, and healing. Anyone wishing to connect with their energy can simply put one in their pocket or wallet to attract insight and financial success. Cowries can also be thrown into a moving body of water such as a river or ocean while a wish is being made. There are obviously many other uses and associations for Cowrie shells; I would love to hear your favorites in the comments below.

Foretelling the future can be a tricky business. It’s hard to trust your own psychic abilities. They are skills one comes into by accident and design. There are lots of things that you can try. These can help to hone your skill if you’re a beginner or even a seasoned expert. I’ve been reading the cards and getting psychic readings for over three decades. Over the years I’ve consulted with thousands of professionals and clients about what it is you need to know, what you want to know, and how the different systems work.

  • Keep a Record– It is good magickal practice to keep track of your readings, dreams, and the events that follow. You don’t need to get obsessively anal about it, but if you keep a journal you can begin to see patterns and signs that you may not have recognized otherwise.
  • Observe your own Thoughts – Consider your own personal observations and associations as they relate to the archetypal symbols present in the Tarot. One of the most important things to remember while reading is “wherever you go, you take yourself with you.”
  • Test and Re-Test– Psychic tests can start with something simple. As your cards a question like will it rain on me today? Or Will I get a call from X in the next 24 hours? Choose simple and verifiable questions to start with. Measure your results against the actual outcomes.
  • Practice– How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Ok, I’m a New Yorker, I couldn’t pass that joke up. No matter what you are trying to achieve practice goes a long way. Many readers start by doing daily sessions with their cards, some still do.
  • Make Sure You Have the Right Cards– There are thousands of tarot and oracle decks in existence today, will more being created every day. There are decks based on Pulp Fiction, Fairies, Dragons, and Goddesses. You can find your way with cards inspired by Victorians, Steampunks, Masons, and a whole host of others.
  • Make Sure You Have the Right Spread– Tarot spreads can be very open or very rigid. There are three card spreads to represent the past, present, and future. There are spreads that incorporate the entire deck and are designed to tell the story of an individuals whole life.
  • Scry or Die– All forms of divination, tarot included, involve opening one’s mind up to new ways of seeing. Most people are used to practicing the art of scrying with a mirror or a crystal ball. These same techniques used with these methods can be utilized with tarot cards. Obviously there is the image one sees on the card, but tarot challenges your mind to think beyond the four edges of the card.
  • Sleep with your Deck– In many different spiritual tradition the psychic energy of places and things is very important. Sleeping with your tarot cards under your pillow allows you and the cards to access your subconscious power. That way there will be an energy exchange between you.
  • Only You Know– Ultimately, you are the only person who can attempt to be objective about what you are seeing in the cards. Sometimes you may notice a tendency towards wishful thinking or paranoia. That may be when you need to take a break.

You know THOSE Psychics.

We have all seen THOSE psychics.

I had one chase me around the supermarket with a broom once, but that is another story. A recent search turned up over three quarters of a million results as to “Why I hate psychics”!

Divination month is continuing here on Voodoo Universe with this list, which could either be very popular or cause some ranting. Join me as we examine why most of the time the fault lies in the person reading the stars, not within ourselves.

  1. Weird Sells – Psychics can be strange. There is a reason that the Shamanic practitioners of yesteryear were on the edges of society. They are the fringes of the fringe. Maybe this is where magick happens, or at least where it’s easier to access. This psychic we shall refer to as MONDO BIZARRO. They may be real, or maybe not, but they are always entertaining.
  2. The Truth- We can’t handle it. This is one of the few things on this list that rests with the seeker and not the reader. I guarantee my readings, and in 30 years I have only returned one woman’s money, and because I wanted to, not at her request. Most people however want to argue with what the cards are saying. They want to smoke the “hopium” and believe things are better, or in most cases much worse than the future holds. I’m not really sure why they get a reading to begin with, I’m calling these folks DOUBTING THOMAS.
  3. The Unknown= Fear = Evil. Some of these “crappy” psychics make their money by instilling fear. Lisa Turner, a British psychic herself, describes this unpleasant tendency saying “the client’s free will is completely enslaved by the psychic to the extent that they can’t decide whether to have marmite or jam on their toast without a consultation.” FEAR DEARS are the names of these.
  4. Cross My Palm, but don’t cross me. One of my priestesses likes to say “that most spiritual practitioners are crazy and they can’t really make a living anywhere else.” It is easy to see how the opportunity to take advantage of someone in need could be great. This psychic we shall call OPPORTUNIVORE.
  5. Bad Press. The Media has capitalized on the strange and bizarre world of the psychic since it began. Over the years we have seen this repeatedly . This shall henceforth be known as MADAME SATAN, after the Hollywood film of the same name.
  6. Jealousy- Once people start from the position that having insight about the future is impossible, of course they are going to dislike people who they believe claim differently. Haters got to Hate. Similar to number 2 above this problem is on the seeker. Try not to be a Mc HATEY like these people.
  7. Scammed Bam No Thank You M’aam. – It has been my experience that magick in many instances is a system where the stakes increase as time goes on. A situation that only took one candle to help with in the beginning, may need two or three when you come back to the psychic table asking for more. We are all familiar with stories of psychics that told people they were horribly cursed, had to return with greater and greater sums of money until they are throwing grandma’s gold jewelry off a bridge in a classic bait and switch. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again this is the lowest common denominator of psychic, we are not all like this. These dubious psychics bear the name SIR SCAM-A-LOT.
  8. Psychic/psychology -Many psychic readers confuse their services with amateur psychology. Ummmm there are laws against these things. This kind of psychic is described as FREUDIAN SLIPPED.
Tarot by Slipp D. Thompson. Licensed under CC 2.0

I have been a tarot/palm/psychic reader for almost three decades. I started years before I published my first book Voodoo and Afro-Caribbean Paganism. Over the years I have done readings everywhere from a parking lot at a Grateful Dead Show to a wellness event for corporate Bloomberg. One of the most memorable events I ever attended was a launch party for a Fashionista magazine here in New York. The event was hipster fantasy. There were artistic television installations, and furry walls, and this was years before Russell Brand sang about those. The idea was to have a psychic reading room for people. I packed up my milk crate to sit on, some purple fairy lites for artistic effect, and the Psychic Readings sign I had found abandoned on the street the month before. I sat down and introduced myself to the other psychic. It quickly became clear as she explained to me she was a psychology major and readings were just a way for people to express their issues. Then she put on a tinfoil hat, literally. So beware the tinfoil hat people, we are not all insane. There are wonderful readers out there, you could get a reading from me or any of the great people I have profiled here on the blog. Read more about them in the links below and have a blessed day!

There’s no doubt about it, we live in interesting times. Never before have Black Tarot readers, psychics, and astrologers been so seen, and so necessary. As a black woman I have always done my best to highlight Black practitioners in the occult, witchcraft, and psychic communities where we are traditionally under-emphasized. Please take a minute to look at the back catalog of the blog Voodoo Universe where we have featured such notables as:

Courtney Alexander and the Dust II Onyx Tarot – I fell in love with this tarot deck the moment I first saw it. Then I got to interview her in 2016,  and even had a visit from Courtney last year, and I fell in love even more. A truly melanated tarot was long overdue and this one is truly amazing. The artwork and knowledge that she drops here is vital for everyone.  For more information, and to purchase one yourself please see the website dust2onyx.com

Mecca Woods, Author and Astrologer– Many of you are familiar with the rising star of astrology known as The Meccanism or Mecca Woods, author of Astrology For Happiness and Success and co-host of TLC’s Stargazing. It was a true joy to be able to interview her here on Voodoo Universe. Click on her name to book a reading, I highly recommend it.

Brandi Auset, Author and Diviner – In my interview with Brandi I write “Brandi Auset is trained as a High Priestess of the Goddess, Reiki Master Teacher, massage therapist, spiritual counselor, and intuitive reader. She has been working with Goddess energy for most of her life, and she teaches workshops on many topics, including sacred sensuality, and techniques for infusing the Divine Feminine into daily life and spiritual practice.”

Fontaine Foxworth and Melanade Stand Tarot – All I can say is that it was a great honor and a true privilege to be included in this groundbreaking Tarot deck featuring Black and Brown women, and even one baby. Please check out this interview with creator Fontaine Foxworth and find out how this deck came to be.

Ifa Divination Tray from the Brooklyn Museum. Licensed under CC 2.0.

I almost didn’t write about the 2020 Reading of the Year from the Yoruba Association of Cuba. In the past I’ve reported on the yearly reading and it has been very popular. The truth of the matter is that each individual spiritual house of Ifa and Lucumi (Santeria) still has its own individual divination for the year. This serves as a definitive guide which is specifically created for all the members of that house. If you are seriously interested in the religion my best advice is to join a house and get this reading for yourself. This may not be easy, but it is the only proper way to proceed. A general reading for the entire world is just that, general.

My dear friend Awo Ogbe Di ,who is a priest in the religion, shared this piece of wisdom last year at this time and again this morning.

“And here we go again. Let me say it a little louder for the folks in the back:

Regardless of the reading of the year in this city, that city, for “the world” (whatever that means), the only reading of the year that is going to actually impact YOU as a person is the one for your house, and for you personally.

People die in wars; they also get rich. They also get married. They also have kids, get promoted, get fired, and live the rest of their lives mostly unimpacted. Even in cities that are bombed, one dude dies, another gets rich on real estate. Which one are you? If the reading of the year says “War” and you sit down and cry, what good does that do? Tend to your OWN reading, and find your ire. Let the “world” take care of itself.”

So again I urge you to find spiritual teachers for yourself. The following 2020 Reading of the Year may be of interest to you, but my best advice is to find a house and get a reading for yourself. The process will allow you to move forward in the religion, leave appropriate offerings, and gain initiation and hopefully find your proper path in life.

The 2020 Reading of the Year as posted en24news.com

“Regent sign: Ogunda Biode

1st. Witness: Irete Ansa

2nd Witness: Baba Ejiogbe

Prophetic Prayer: Osorbo Acoba Lowo Araye. Orunmila Orile.

Divinity that governs: Oshun

Accompanying deity: Obatala

Flag of the year: Yellow with white trim”
