I’ve spoken here about the reasons why I think the word “convert” can be helpful for people new to Hinduism. It’s a label that one often grows beyond, but in the beginning it can help to frame your experience when you’re learning and doing things for the first time.
However, I have realized thanks to my friends on Twitter that the word “convert” is a sensitive one. It is so closely connected to the evil and underhanded schemes of some certain Christian groups who trick Hindus away from Hinduism.
Also there is the ways in which Hinduism is different from most religions with their strict organizations, rules, books, and founders. Santana Dharma is vast and difficult to define.
So I’ve been exploring some other words that could be used instead of “Convert.”
A friend on Twitter suggested “Transformation” rather than “Conversion.” I think that’s quite lovely.
Other suggestions have been “Realization” rather than “Conversion” and that’s a great one too. It has that sense of awakening to something that is already within you. Speaking of which, “Awaken” is a good one too.
My husband suggested “Affirm” instead of “convert.”
What do you think? What word would better capture the idea of discovering Sanatana Dharma?
