The White Hindu
I find there’s kind of a funny effect from watching faith practices from religions that aren’t mine. I deepen my own practice!
This has been happening for me through two TV shows that I’ve been really enjoying.
The first is Little Mosque on the Prairie, a Canadian show that is now available on Hulu. (The first season is available for free). It’s about a small town mosque and it has a very light and fun look at Muslim experience in the west. The characters are really well drawn and very funny. This show reminds me how crucial it is for me to have a community that is part of my daily life. It inspires me to get to my weekly bhajan meeting and encourages me to visit the temple more often.
The second is The Sisterhood: Becoming Nuns. This is a reality show on Lifetime about five young women in America visiting convents while considering becoming a Catholic nun. I’ve always been fascinated by that life of putting religion absolutely first. When I was a teenager I used to read memoirs of nuns all the time. Part of me really wanted to be a nun. I think a lot of little girls romanticize that life! The only thing that stopped me was….I wasn’t Catholic! I studied and considered Catholicism but it just isn’t something I can believe. However, watching the show is a delightful behind the scenes look at the modern life of American nuns. The sisters are what really make the show. They are wonderfully human and the show takes away some of that mystique. This show reminds me to be dedicated to my prayer life and how important it is for me to help others. Watching them work with the homeless or the aged reminds me that I want to be doing more to help others.
I love seeing faith represented on TV and I love the shows. Now we just need some similar Hindu shows!
