I just voted “Definitely” to include Cardinal Timothy Dolan on the upcoming TIME Magazine 100 most influential people list. Here’s why. (more…) Read more

Oops. That’s awkward. And while the board looks the same, chess is a whole ‘nother game than checkers. You see, after yesterdays presidential tirade regarding the Supreme Court, today a lower court handed the Litigator-in-Chief, via the Justice Department, a homework assignment regarding Judicial Review, and a query as to whether the Executive Branch understands the concept. A three page essay is due on Thursday. Mark Shea has a little fun with this turn of events.  (more…) Read more

Faith, if practiced only in the confines of a church, synagogue, or mosque, demonstrates weakness, fear, or a lack of conviction. As such, it renders faith mediocre and lukewarm. —Fr. Leo Patalinghug (more…) Read more

When you have a post with a title with two acronyms, a healthcare law, a bureaucratic mandate, the USCCB, and the Social Doctrine of the Church, you have to be prepared for one thing, and one thing only: not pleasing everyone. That’s why this is an interesting time to live, see? And it’s Holy Week too? (more…) Read more

Last year on this day, I shared an off-the-wall poem about Palm Sunday penned by G.K. Chesterton. This time around, I’d like to share the prologue to his collection of four novellas that were published and entitled as, “The Four Faultless Felons.” Tying it all together is a prologue and epilogue on a model of virtue know as Count Raoul de Marillac. As always, GKC has a way of turning matters on their head, and looking at them upside down... Read more

I’m not saying it’s perfect, but it is worth sharing. It would be neat, for example, if the Holy Thursday description noted that the Messiah, the new Moses, institutes the New Passover Feast, the Eucharist, so we can be led out of bondage (this world) by him into the new promised land (the new heaven and earth), but who am I to criticize? Besides, there’s no space for all of that. I only wish I knew who came up with... Read more

Stop the presses, as this just came in from todays’ Wall Street Journal. A frank interview between James Taranto, and Cardinal Timothy Dolan on the HHS Mandate surprise attack. Perhaps “ambush” is a better description. You be the judge. By JAMES TARANTO, New York The president of the U.S. Conference of Bishops is careful to show due respect for the president of the United States. “I was deeply honored that he would call me and discuss these things with me,”... Read more

This is the year of seeing films I have never seen before. Last week, we saw Richard Burton and Jean Simmons in The Robe. And in the weeks previously, we’ve watched St. Ralph, and The Mighty Macs too. So aside from The Musketeers double feature, every film this year has been a first time view for me. Tonight is no exception. (more…) Read more

What is the happiest sounding instrument in the world? Hands down, my vote goes to the banjo. And one of the greatest players of the banjo of all time has been called home. Yes, we have lost Earl Scruggs, and I for one am saddened by this news. But not for long, see? Because Earl wouldn’t put up with me wearing the long face for too long. The Associated Press relates the news to us as follows, (more…) Read more

Rocco Palmo scooped this up first, naturally, and it’s fantastic. Watch the latest video at video.foxnews.com Wasn’t that awesome? Bravo Zulu. But while Rocco waxes euphoric about our favorite USCCB quarterback getting seen by over 3 million (mostly conservative) viewers on Bill O’Reilly’s show, I’m thinking His Excellency should take his show on the road, and head over to Comedy Central and pick up the other viewers too. He should make appearances where the rest of the viewers, including liberals... Read more
