I have to admit to you, dear reader, that I am ignorant about much regarding the way “things” are. The world is a very complex place, and this is mostly through our own, dare I say it, grievous faults. And I also need to let you know that the semi-annual fracus in the Holy Places, like the one I shared with you yesterday, both sadden me and excite my interest in learning how they came about. Talk about things that are “ridiculously Catholic,” how about ridiculously Orthodox things like…BARFIGHT! Oh wait…CHURCHFIGHT! I mean a fight instead of field-daying (read “cleaning”) the building is always more appealing. Sheeeeesh. This is getting to be a routine, nay, traditional, occurrence. Call me crazy, but maybe it’s time this “responsibility” was outsourced to a neutral cleaning company, and then the costs shared five ways among the various parties involved here. At the Battle of Mobile Bay in the American Civil War, Admiral David Glasgow Farragut gave a famous command. When one of his ships struck a mine and sank and the remaining ships in the fleet got “cold feet” and dallied, he shouted, “Damn the torpedoes! Full Speed ahead!” The remaining ships pressed on and swept the harbor of Confederate resistance. The Catholic Church’s stance on abortion strikes me as similar. (more…) Read more

The folks at Bad Lip Reading are expanding their repertoire. Probably a smart move, because political ads come and go as the election cycle ebbs and flows. Turning to music videos then, we find that nothing is safe from their lip reading genius. Here’s my third day of Christmas present to YIMCatholic readers. That Should Be Me, the way Flatts & Beiber never imagined. (more…) Read more

This, in a nutshell, is why I became a Marine. “It’s a reminder of why we became Marines in the first place. So that our family and friends are able to celebrate the holidays – freely. It makes us happy to know they can, even if we are all the way out here in Kandahar, Afghanistan, away from our loved ones.” —Gunnery Sergeant Charles V. Westall, USMC (more…) Read more

And that is good enough for me. Especially because smarter, more capable, and more knowledgeable folks spell it all out for me too. Fr. Dwight Longenecker: Christmas, Pagan Romans, and Frodo Baggins. Jake Tawney: The Dating of Christmas. Alexander Pope: Messiah And, of course, Linus reciting the passage from St. Luke. Isn’t Govert Teunisz Flinck’s painting, Angels Announcing the Birth to the Shepherds (1639, oil on wood) beautiful? Be of good cheer! UPDATE: Mike Flynn’s letter to the editor. Read more

Words can be tricky things. Words spoken. Words written. Words thought of. Words acted upon. Words seemingly written in clarity. Words being read in a fog of misunderstanding. Words with only one meaning. Words with many meanings. A writer’s or blogger’s stock-in-trade is words. And words are the ultimate double-edged swords. (more…) Read more
