—Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary   When I was a kid, I really enjoyed reading history. Usually, I wasn’t reading the history that I was supposed to be reading in the classroom.  I really didn’t do that well in school until I served two hitches in the Marines and then decided to get out and go to college. Grade school and high school? Homework, schmomework! (more…) Read more

Which kicks off Respect Life Month. In case your parish missed mentioning it, due to missunderstanding Pope Francis’s thoughts regarding discussing life issues, for example, let me allow Cardinal Seán O’Malley to explain what it is all about, and why the Catholic Church has been honoring it since 1972. You, and your entire family, will be the richer for it. Empty nesters? Go see it. Newly weds? Go see it. Single, unattached, and happy with that? Go see it. Parents of a young family? It may be too intense for your young ones, but get a sitter and go see it. Better Catholic bloggers than I am are recommending it heartily. You should listen to them. (more…) Read more

This Is My Friend (from an old manuscript) Let me tell you how I made His acquaintance. I had heard much of Him, but took no heed. He sent daily gifts and presents, but I never thanked Him. He often seemed to want my friendship, but I remained cold. (more…) Read more

—Feast of St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus Today we celebrate the feast of a Doctor of the Church, the little nun who could, the Little Flower, Thérèse of Lisieux. Responsible for countless conversions to the Faith, she bowled over Thomas Merton, made a big impression on me, and sank, for all intents and purposes, John C.H. Wu’s battleship, with a direct hit amidships. Her little way of love reminds me of what Pope Francis has been saying lately. (more…) Read more
