Christian Nationalism seems to be getting worse. This week, it gave a stage to Kyle Rittenhouse who was met with elaborate praise and gave a scandal-ridden ex-president (Trump) a Sunday morning pulpit. It is obviously problematic for many of us, but what do we do with family members who support and celebrate these things? To help us discuss, we are joined by Promise Enlow whose family is deeply involved with Qanon and considered leaders among several prophets who believe Trump is God's chosen. Schenk, an Evangelical clergyman who has ministered to elected and appointed officials in Washington, D.C. and serves as president of a non-profit organization named for Dietrich Bonhoeffer, can be found in the new Documentary "God + Country." Schenck says that he was part of a group that paid Norma McCorvey (also known as Jane Roe from the landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision) to lie that she had changed her mind and become against abortion. Schenck now speaks up to undo the work he used to do after seeing the harm it caused. So often we hear Christians say of deconstructionists "oh they are hurt." Well, turns out scientific research says this is likely true, but ought to be treated as a negative attribute of the American Christian Church, not as an excuse to victim-blame but it. Guest Darren Slade's organization, the Global Center for Religious Research, defines religious trauma as resulting "from an event, series of events, relationships, or circumstances within or connected to religious beliefs, practices, or structures that is experienced by an individual as overwhelming or disruptive and has lasting adverse effects on a persons physical, mental, social, emotional, or spiritual well-being." Cynane Shay of Taking off the Tinfoil Hat joins April and Paul for a chat about conspiracy theories within evangelicalism. Cynane is a nuclear engineer living in South Carolina. Her childhood in White Christian Nationalism (Florida-style) normalized conspiracy theories like Obama Birtherism and the Biblical apocalypse; but 2020, with COVID and Qanon, finally made her realize something was deeply wrong. Now Cynane is writing a book, Taking Off the Tinfoil Hat: How Lizard People and Space Lasers Dismantled my Christian Worldview, to process the deconstruction of her fundamentalist evangelicalism and her propagandistic patriotism. Losing loved ones to the pandemic was a tragedy, but losing loved ones to the rabbit hole was its own tragedy and Cynane needed to understand the why. Dr. Dan McClellan is back! He joins Paul and April to talk about what the Bible actually says when it comes to all of the "clobber" passages certain Christians like to use against LGBTQ people. Dan McClellan is a public scholar of the Bible and religion. He received his PhD in theology and religion from the University of Exeter. In 2022 he published YHWH's Divine Images: A Cognitive Approach as an open-access book. He worked for a decade as a scripture translation supervisor for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and in 2023 transitioned to full-time public scholarship. He goes by @maklelan across several social media platforms, as well as on the Data Over Dogma Podcast, where he seeks to increase public access to the academic study of the Bible and religion and combat the spread of misinformation about the same.
