Episode 24
Good Things Happen In This Episode with Ellen Compton
In this episode we have a conversation with Ellen Compton. I will let Ellen introduce herself. Allow me to introduce myself with a few miscellaneous thoughts: I am a family-prioritizing, coffee-drinking, truth-telling, authenticity-seeking, list-making, God-following, world-loving, ambiverted, former closet writer. The words laid back have never been used to describe me. I am an unabashed over-user of hashtags and emojis. The message written on my heart is one of identity; I am passionate about living authentically as the person I was created to be and helping others to do likewise…even in the midst of this gauntlet that is life. I live on the east coast of Canada with my family. My teenagers are occasionally mind-boggling, and entirely magnificent. In addition to writing, I teach French to High School students…and all remaining hours are, quite literally, spent in my vehicle, driving the teenagers to hockey practices, rehearsals, horseback riding, and to visit friends. It’s a full, imperfect and wonderful life. Only Love: How Everything Was. Is. And Will Be With Niq Ruud
In this episode we talk with Niq Ruud. Niq's bio in his own words: The funky spelling is my dad’s fault, but it’s just pronounced like your favorite Christmas saint. I grew up in the good ole Pacific Northwest which means I like doing stuff outside—alpine climbing, sailing, surfing, skiing, cycling, et cetera. I studied religion in college (Walla Walla University), worked as a pastor while I went to seminary (Grand Canyon Theological Seminary), and now I’m a postgrad studying the intersectionality between philosophy, science, and religion (University of Edinburgh). I’m interested in lots of things, including religious pluralism, philosophy of science and religion, eschatology, diversity, and ethics, which all gravitate around the human perception of God. I wrote a book about God too, it’s called Only Love: How Everything Was, Is, and Will Be. It basically advocates for a more open-minded view of God and, subsequently, a more inclusive view of each other. I like it. You might too. Wholehearted Faith: A Conversation With Jeff Chu
In this Episode we chat with Jeff Chu. Here is Jeff's bio in his own words. I wear several different hats to cover my coarse Chinese hair, which requires too much product to tame: Writer, reporter, editor. Co-curator and co-host, with Sarah Bessey, Of Evolving Faith. Editor-at-large at Travel & Leisure. Occasional preacher. Teacher in residence at Crosspointe Church. Ordinand in the Reformed Church in America (RCA). Cook, gardener, and dog walker to Fozzie in Michigan, where my husband and I moved last year. (First time living in the Midwest. Snow tires are a revelation!) Before that, I was a seminarian at Princeton Theological Seminary, where I worked as a farmhand at PTS’s Farminary. Don’t be deceived… When I got to the Farminary, a 21-acre experiment in sustainable agriculture that doubles as the world’s best classroom, I didn’t know anything about farming, and I had more experience killing plants than nurturing them. But my work on the farm changed me. More than anything else in my life, that land taught me about the story of life, death, and new life that God has written into creation. The Geometry Of Truth with Bayo Akomolafe
In This episode we chat with Bayo Akomolafe. Bayo Akomolafe is the grateful life-partner to ‘EJ’, father to Alethea Aanya and Kyah Jayden Abayomi, son of Olufunmilayo Ibidapo Akomolafe and Ignatius Abayomi Akomolafe, and descendant of Yoruba fields of archetypal becomings and mythopoeic landscapes. He is an author, celebrated speaker, teacher, and self-styled trans-public intellectual (a concept imagined together with and inspired by the shamanic priesthood of the Yoruba healer-trickster)- whose vocation goes beyond justice and speaking truth to power to opening up other spaces of power-with, and queering fond formulations and configurations of hope. Dr. Bayo Akomolafe considers his most sacred work to be learning how to be with his daughter and son, Alethea Aanya and Kyah Jayden – and their mother, his wife and “life-nectar”, Ijeoma. “To learn the importance of insignificance” is the way he frames a desire to reacquaint himself with a world that is irretrievably entangled, preposterously alive and completely partial. A Clock, A Key, and A Net: A Conversation with Carol Wimmer
In this episode we chat with Carol Wimmer. After twenty-two years of church ministry, as a director of music and artistic ministries, Carol Wimmer felt a call that led her away from the institutional model of the church. From 1996 to 2000, she experienced an intense time of spiritual growth. The new insights opened the door to fresh theological perspectives in three areas of human concern: time, language, and the organization of God’s people. Believing that personal insight must be grounded in credible scholarship, Carol entered the field of biblical research as an independent researcher. Her studies culminated in the presentation of several academic papers within the Society of Biblical Literature. She has published three books to date and is planning to publish her fourth book soon. She hopes her research will help, in some small way, to reorient the focus of the collective human spirit in the areas of time, language and organization. Carol writes from a visionary perspective. She offers spiritual insights gained through the lens of light, color and images of Creation. The Bible Speaks to You: A Conversation with James Early
In this episode we chat with James Early Here is James' bio in his own words. I am a Bible teacher, speaker, blogger, podcaster, soon-to-be author. And I am a “Jesus mindset”coach. Since October 2008 I have conducted weekly Bible studies at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, CT. I give talks and conduct workshops on the Bible covering a wide range of topics to churches and groups as well as at the prison. I grew up in Amarillo, Texas and was a member of the Presbyterian Church. In high school I became dis-satisfied with some of the things I was being taught there and started going to the Christian Science church, which I have been a member of since. Currently I live in Bethel, CT with my wife, Polly Castor. We have three grown children, which we homeschooled all the way through high school. I was a full-time stay-at-home dad for 10 years when we first started our family. I love to garden and hike in my spare time. I never fit into the corporate world, but have done sales and marketing and voice-over work, which led me to want to share my message instead of someone else's. So, I started The Bible Speaks to You Podcast in the fall of 2019, to explore the here-and-nowness of the kingdom of heaven and how it impacts the way we live our daily lives. The purpose of my podcast is to get back to the original Christianity of Jesus without all the things we have added in the last 2,000 years, to rediscover our right and our ability to think, act, pray, and heal like Jesus did. I am on a journey to discover our right and ability to embrace this mindset of Jesus, to see ourselves through the lens of Christ’s love, and live our lives from the perspective of Jesus’s promise that the kingdom of heaven is at hand. I help others discover this for themselves as well. Understanding the Enneagram: A Conversation with Ellen Compton
In this episode we chat with Ellen Compton. What To Believe: A Conversation With John D Caputo
This Quoircast podcast episode is brought to you by Religious Refugees by Mark Karris. Published by Quoir and available now. In this episode we chat with John D Caputo John D. Caputo is a hybrid philosopher/theologian intent on producing impure thoughts, thoughts which circulate between philosophy and theology, short-circuits which deny fixed and rigorous boundaries between philosophy and theology. Caputo treats "sacred" texts as a poetics of the human condition, or as a "theo-poetics," a poetics of the event harbored in the name of God. His past books have attempted to persuade us that hermeneutics goes all the way down ( Radical Hermeneutics ), that Derrida is a thinker to be reckoned with by theology ( The Prayers and Tears of Jacques Derrida ), and that theology is best served by getting over its love affair with power and authority and embracing what Caputo calls, following St. Paul, The Weakness of God. He has also addressed wider-than-academic audiences in On Religion and What Would Jesus Deconstruct? and has an interest in interacting with the working church groups like ikon and the “Emergent” Church. He is currently working in a book on our frail and mortal flesh, probably to be entitled The Fate of All Flesh: A Theology of the Event, II. Too Close To The Flame: A Conversation With Joe Ingle
This Quoircast podcast episode is brought to you by Inking Christ by Justin Scoggins. It is published by Quoir and is available now In this episode we chat with Joe Ingle Joe Ingle, a North Carolina native, left the South after college and moved to East Harlem to join the E. Harlem Urban Year program. He spent his senior year at Union Theological Seminary visiting prisoners at the Bronx House of Detention. Prior to that experience, his initial time with prisoners, he was a typical white guy from the South. When he returned to the South, he was a changed man. Living in Nashville, TN, he began working against mass incarceration and the death penalty with the Southern Coalition on Jails and Prisons which he helped create. This led him to visit every Southern death row and create a web of relationships with the women and men imprisoned there. Working to save their lives led him to meetings in governor’s offices, legislatures, courtrooms, churches, synagogues, bishop and archbishop offices. And it led him into the homes of the families of the condemned and victims. Realizing many of the condemned had no lawyers, he along with three colleagues, created a law project—The Southern Center for Human Rights—to represent them.
