Disclaimer: This is a bit of a departure from my usual subject matter, but after all I can’t spend all my time considering the opportunities for grace one finds in a dirty diaper. A while ago, Simcha put up a very interesting post about what English sounds like to non-English speakers. Even if you don’t go read the whole post, at least watch this video, which is supposed to be an example of what American English sounds like to non-English... Read more

The last two weeks have been, in the words of my brother’s generation, an EPIC FAIL. Not only am I still flipping sick, but in a seriously misguided and ill-judged attempt to stretch the meager food left in our fridge so I can use this week’s grocery  money for next week’s Thanksgiving feast, I made chicken tacos with some chicken meat leftover from making stock. But I forgot to label the meat, and I forgot to mentally do the math... Read more

Eleven years ago today, I woke up at 5:30 in the morning, sweaty and terrified. I had been having a nightmare unlike any I had had before. In my nightmare, my older sister and I were at the traditional A&M; Bonfire. We were there visiting her close friend Jerry, a junior at A&M; and a member of the Corps. We were standing in the front of the large crowd that ringed the huge, blazing tower, and I could feel the... Read more

I gave my kids cookies for breakfast this morning. I don’t really feel bad about, either. *striking combative stance* No really, I don’t feel bad. I’ve been trying to get myself to feel guilty about it since it happened two hours ago but it’s not working. My self-induced guilt machine must be broken. Hallelujah! I think I don’t feel guilty because every single morning I usually wake up to find myself standing in front of a frying pan with toast... Read more

But I have fantastic kids and an amazing husband. The little irritations and occasional (or not so occasional) tantrums are so huge in my eyes that I let them overshadow the many wonderful, charming and hilarious qualities my kids have. Sienna is probably the most thoughtful and considerate five year old in the world. Every morning she wakes me up in the hideous half-light that preceeds six a.m., grabs my hand as I tumble groggily out of bed and walks... Read more

I know, my readers, that some of you are secret culinary geniuses. I know because I lurk on your blogs too, and I see things like Melanie’s artisan bread and chakchouka (if you’re thinking “what the hell is chakchouka?” you’re not alone) or Andrea’s lasagna, chicken noodle soup, Amish bread and apple pie (just typing all that makes me tired) or Janet’s apple cake with caramel glaze, bbq pulled pork, homemade buns and monster snack for the kiddo (seriously, the... Read more

I’m feeling dull and still flu-ish, though thankfully the vomiting has stopped, so these might be dull and flu-ish as well. Sorry. #7 The Plague I’m not so sure that reading Connie Willis’ Doomsday Book was really a good idea for me. I have a horribly overactive imagination, particularly when it comes to my children, so since reading that book I’ve been checking their armpits for buboes anytime they have a runny nose. There’s something wrong with me. #6 Outbreak... Read more

So, seriously, as a mother, you would think that not all the lessons I learn would come from poop or puke. Apparently, that is not the case. We’ve been down with the flu this week. That wonderful, cozy day of snuggling was actually the calm before the sore-throat, runny-nose, projectile-vomiting feverish storm of a week that we’re just now wrapping up. At the moment, the Ogre is sleeping gratefully after a few nights of being up with a vomiting toddler... Read more

Today was sort of a strange day. We were all feeling a little under the weather, so we spent most of the day just laying around. While Sienna was at school this morning, the Ogre pointed out to me that Charlotte had fallen asleep on the couch. She looked so small and alone laying there, leaning her head against the arm of the big couch that I found myself scooping her up and snuggling down into the couch cushions with... Read more

…that’s happening on Sunday morning because I went to bed too early last night to link up. Sorry, guys. Here’s how this works. The lovely Elizabeth Esther hosts a blog carnival over at her place where you can pick your favorite post from the last month and link it to her page. This month, I chose my post about Sienna throwing up on me, because that’s kind of how I feel about the month of October. Then, you make a... Read more
