Top 7 Bible Verses To Study With Your Spouse

Top 7 Bible Verses To Study With Your Spouse May 16, 2015

Loving your spouse is certainly the most important aspect of a marriage relationship. However, it is also imperative that you come into agreement with each other on various key topics as well. Being one with your spouse in every area of life—God, children, finances, love, relationships, thoughts, and attitudes—is also of critical importance in a successful lifetime partnership. With this in mind, here are my top 7 Bible verses to study with your spouse.

Deuteronomy 6:4-7 “ You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

Bible Verses To Study With Your Spouse

First and foremost, for a Christian marriage to not only succeed but to thrive, a couple must place God in the center of their relationship. They must love, know, and trust God fully in order to be one with each other and with Him. As the author explains in this verse, it is imperative that we love the Lord with ALL of our heart, soul and might. Only then will we be able to love our husbands or wives completely as well. So this is one of the most crucial Bible verses to study with your spouse.

Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”

Raising children is another critical area that parents need to agree on and come into unity. This is especially true of Christian parents who want their offspring to love God and grow up as dedicated believers. This verse is a great starting point for parents to discuss, plan and decide how to train up their child in the best way possible. All parents want their children to learn and master the important things in life, so teaching them these principles diligently will ensure that when they are older they will not forget the critical things that they have been taught and modeled.

Malachi 3:10 “Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.”

In order for a marriage to survive the hardships of life, a couple needs to have a proper handle on their finances. God’s word is full of verses that encourage us to use money wisely. One of the most important verses for spouses to study, though, is this verse in Malachi. When a Christian couple tithes at least a tenth of their income to the Lord, then they will see tremendous financial blessings come their way. This is they only Scripture that states that we should test God in this, so it means that it is an important promise from the Lord.

I Corinthians 13:7Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”

I believe that a couple needs to understand what true love is all about, and this verse is a great one to study together. Learning and examining this verse can help spouses learn what love really means, as the word “love” encompasses so many ideals. What does it mean that love bears, believes, hopes and endures all things? A marital couple will want to study and experience these concepts throughout their lifetime in order to truly understand them.

Ephesians 4:32 “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”

Interpersonal relationships and knowing how to Biblically treat others is another valuable area for couples to study together. This verse in Ephesians touches on several key points, and it is worthy of careful perusal and examination. Being kind and tenderhearted to one another in a marriage relationship is very important as well as forgiving one another continually. Christ Jesus, our Lord, freely forgave us, so we need to exercise that trait in our own lives as well—especially in relation to our spouses, but also with others we come into contact with each day. It is easy for our hearts to harden or to begin to take the people around us for granted, but the Lord wants to encourage us to keep our hearts softened and tender towards others.

Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

Our thought patterns can get us into a lot of trouble if they are allowed to run rampant and unfettered. For that reason, the Lord gave us this key verse to remind us of the importance of keeping our thoughts pure and under control. We should think about what is praiseworthy, excellent, commendable, lovely, pure, just, honorable, and true. Therefore, I believe this verse is another key one to study with your spouse, as you both strive to focus on the good and valuable things in life.

Colossians 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”

My final top verse to study with my spouse might seem strange to some, but it involves maintaining a godly atmosphere within the home and around your hearts at all times. This can only be achieved when we study God’s word on a regular basis and spend time praying together and encouraging each other in our Christian walk as well. I believe that incorporating an attitude of gratitude in our lives will also increase our joy and spiritual maturity. The music we listen to is also of key importance, as it ties in to what we are thinking about throughout our day.

CONCLUSION

God loves us so much, and he gave us his word—the Bible—as an amazing resource and tool to help us overcome the daily struggles of life. So as a married couple, it is very appropriate for us to study key Biblical passages to gain wisdom and agree together on important principles. We might not ever fully grasp the depth of God’s love or goodness towards us, but when we search his word he will guide us in our relationships with him, with our children, our finances, with love, our relationships, our thoughts, and with our attitudes.

God has been good to me over the years, and I have much for which to be grateful to Him. First of all, I feel blessed to be the pastor’s wife of a thriving church in northern Michigan and the mother of four amazing grown children. It is also very rewarding to be a Christian author, editor and translator for the Kingdom of God. Some of my favorite pastimes include supporting my children’s contemporary Christian band ONLY9AM, singing on the worship team at church, traveling, and connecting with family and friends via social media. When I am not working, I love spending time with my family and especially with my precious three-year-old grandson.
