I Built This, Mr. President

Over on Bristol Pain’s blog, she asked people to send in photos of their small businesses:

President Obama recently said, “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

Small business owners all over America took offense at this incorrect view that government (instead of elbow grease, intelligence, and good-old-fashioned risk taking) is the bedrock of our economy.

Each photo is worth a thousand words — click through the slideshow and feel good about these hard working Americans!!

There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me because they want to give something back,” the president said. “If you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something — there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.
“If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen,” he said. “The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.”

You are participating in a lie

  • Donalbain

Wow. Misquoting to completely change the clear meaning of the speech. Why does that surprise me?

Conservatives lie. They lie without pause. They lie without shame.

Their favourite form of lie is the quote-mine. They quote-mine scientists; they quote-mine politicians; they quote-mine historians; they quote-mine economists.

Okay, I’m exaggerating a little, but, to be honest, I am angry.

And of course Mr. French won’t respond

Nancy is a lady’s name.. and SOME of us listened to the whole speech. In fact I heard it without prejudice the first time and was STILL appalled at his words. From 2 years old I worked my grandfather’s farm. For my schooling my family paid for my classes there was no government assistance in my school it was thousands of dollars out of my family’s pockets. Here’s a kicker for ya.. I didn’t USE roads to go to school. I worked my tail end off to pay for my college while I was raising my nephews and STILL managed to get a 3.98 GPA. No student loans no government grants I went to a private college that cost a MINT! (No my family stopped paying for my school when I was 16 and graduated.) The only hep I’ve EVER received in my LIFE was my wonderful grandparents teaching me work ethics and not to fear obstacles. I thank God for those lessons too because I’ve had to hurdle PLENTY of obstacles from our government as I started my own business. Seems every step of the way they would knock me flat on my booty!

So I really don’t care what flimsy excuses he uses to explain away his mental break downs every time he turns off the teleprompter. I DID BUILD MY LIFE FROM NOTHING!

Just because SOME people (like him) have had everything handed to him doesn’t mean that the American people haven’t worked their tail ends off to become something that was more than what they were.
