Donate to the Coalition for Responsible Home Education! December 14, 2016

Hey all! I’ve written a number of times about the abuses that can occur in homeschool settings. Homeschooling can be a positive educational option—indeed, some of my readers homeschool—but without oversight unscrupulous parents can get away with failing to educate, and even with hiding children away or abusing them horrifically. Five years ago there were no organizations out there working on this problem, but this is no longer true. In past few years, homeschool alumni have created two nonprofit organizations working to support homeschooled children—Homeschool Alumni Reaching Out (HARO) and the Coalition for Responsible Home Education (CRHE).

The Coalition for Responsible Home Education (CRHE) has a fundraising drive each December, and I always try to put up a post encouraging my readers to consider contributing. In full disclosure, I have personal connections to many of the individuals involved in CRHE, some of whom have written guest posts here in the past. I am by no means a neutral bystander! This is a cause I believe in and an organization that has my full support.

CRHE’s 2016 December fund drive goal is $2,500. You can help make this happen! Please consider giving, and if you can’t give personally, spread the word.

When we founded CRHE in 2013, the problem we faced looked almost insurmountable. In most states, homeschooled children had few if any protections; in too many cases, children were being educationally neglected or abused under the guise of homeschooling.  Still, we knew that change happens one step at a time. Over the past three years, we have built a foundation for homeschool reform. This year, for the first time, CRHE testified before a legislative committee. This year we began two new studies—one on New York State’s homeschool laws and the other homeschool alumni’s athletics experience. And finally, this year we saw the number of people contacting us for help rise and watched our web traffic grow as we created new resources.

We could not have made this progress without the support of our donors, volunteers, and alumni advocates. Our organization has always been part of a larger grassroots movement for reform—and that means individuals like you have a vital role to play. You can join our team today by making a one-time or recurring donation. We are a 501c(3) organization, and as such your donations are fully tax deductible. By donating to CRHE you help us work toward a future where homeschooling is a child-centered educational option, used only to prepare children for an open future. Join us as we continue building on the foundation we’ve created.
