Reposted and shared, with permission. For all those who want to know how and why I converted to Islam, here’s everything you need to know: In May 27th, 2011, I took my shahada, or my declaration of faith in Islam in front of our crowded masjid. However, I did not become a Muslim on that day. I have been Muslim my entire life, but was unaware of it.  I have always believed in one God and Him alone. This thought is one... Read more

Jummah Mubarak Peeps and Tweets! This morning I’m in a flurry of activity here but I wanted to share with you these two videos I came across this week. Sometime, about a year and a half ago or so I came across the Islamic Center at NYU podcasts called KhutbaKast. I was searching for a spiritual message that connected with my every day life, and I wasn’t getting it from the Imams in my city. I took the KhutbaKast for... Read more

Look at what was delivered to my door last night,  accompanied by the smiling, happy face of New Friend.  I tell you, this was almost as fun as being the giver of the food.  The joy and happiness on her face as she surprised us was infectious. I’m hoping to make another delivery this weekend. So, we had no idea what this kind of food was.  I have never encountered it before, the kids thought maybe doughnuts.  I thought maybe... Read more

Happy Ramadan, Day 3. Last night we finished off the Moussaka, and I assembled the breakfast casserole to bake.  Not having ever made this type of food before, I didn’t know it’s supposed to rest overnight before baking.  It might just be our dinner today, with a nice salad.  I’m still working that out. So, after I assembled the breakfast casserole, I made the rest of the sausage into patties and fried them up with the thought that they would... Read more

For Iftar last night, I made Moussaka using the recipe my sister in law taught me the last time she was here visiting, but with my tweaks.  The thing is, there isn’t any measurements for the ingredients aside from the Bechamel Sauce.  So, I will give you the recipe I used with my pictures, but you have to gauge the amounts for your own pans.  🙂   Moussaka 1 1/2 lb lean ground beef 1/2 onion 1/2 green pepper (saute... Read more

This summer has gone by in a whirlwind of activity.  From Arabic summer school for the little ones, to visiting the YMCA and swimming.  Day trips and weekend trips and adventures to the local orchard for veggie picking have just swept the summer laziness out of my house. Somehow, in the last two weeks, I’ve found the time to  start mentally preparing for Ramadan. I wanted this month to be better than it has in the past years.  I wanted... Read more

I have a confession to make. I love to make decadent desserts with multiple steps, often that take a few days.  I usually make Tiramisu to celebrate the end of the school year, and this year I’ve been making my own ice cream.  I love to bake bread and cookies and cakes.  I’ve made tarts and I’ve even tried my hand at galaktoboureko. But I am often a lazy eater.  When it comes to fruit, if it’s cut up and room... Read more

In the past I have written about how my family enjoys the holiday celebrations that are typically American.  I have been blessed with a husband and extended family that are willing to go that extra mile for each other, and who are willing to compromise and accept the differences that enhance the flavor of our lives. Over the weekend, a new commenter here posted a request for help.  Janelle writes: “I have been blessed with a beautiful daughter and a... Read more
