When Sports Worlds Collide

When Sports Worlds Collide June 17, 2013

Over the past year or so, I’ve become quite a cricket fan.

I’m firmly ensconced in amateur territory, of course — a fact that will probably never change — but I’m having a blast all the same. It’s a crazy, crazy game. (Also, yes. I was watching it before I got hooked on Downton. How dare you insinuate otherwise?)

As a long-time (nearly life-time) baseball fan, though, the similarities between “my game” and the British pastime were more confusing than helpful. Expectations born of hours and hours of baseball watching kept suggesting to me that things would happen in a certain fashion; at a certain time and place. And when they didn’t, I was forced to reorient myself — over and over and over again.

One thing  that wasn’t confusing, though?

The vocabulary.

It’s not that it was straight-forward; far from it. Instead, it was so completely other, I had absolutely no associates to reorient. It was all so blessedly new, I was a veritable tabula rasa. Thankfully, I’m a quick learn when it comes to sports terminology. Otherwise, I’d have run the risk of gravely embarrassing myself  before those who actually knew what they were watching/talking about.

Happily, the tables are now turned!
