77 years later, woman finds child conceived in rape

Photo: Ana Venegas/AP: Minka Disbrow discovered her daughter was raised by a Norwegian pastor and his wife and has six children including astronaut Mark Lee.

Wow, what a story:

On a summer day in 1928 while picnicking with girls from a sewing class, Disbrow and her friend Elizabeth were jumped by three men as they went for a walk in their long dresses.

Both were raped.

“We didn’t know what to do. We didn’t know what to say. So when we went back, nothing was said,” Disbrow recalled.

Months passed. Her body began to change.

Disbrow, who had been told babies were brought by storks, didn’t know what was happening.

Her mother and stepfather sent her to a Lutheran home for pregnant girls. At 17, she gave birth to a blond-haired baby with a deep dimple in her chin and named her Betty Jane.

In her heart, Disbrow longed to keep her. But her head and her mother told her she couldn’t bring an infant back to the farm.

A pastor and his wife were looking to adopt a child. She hoped they could give Betty Jane the home she couldn’t.

“I loved that baby so much. I wanted what was best,” Disbrow said.

She never met them, or knew their names. But over the years, Disbrow wrote dozens of letters to the adoption agency to find out how her daughter was faring. The agency replied faithfully with updates until there was a change in management…

Here we have an incredibly moving story, yet a lot of commenters on thestar.com insist that it has nothing to do with abortion. How do you convince the hardhearted?

I read the entire story. It’s a very moving, touching story. Thank you for sharing it. Love knows no time or space.

Wonderful story. we have one very similar here in town, but few know about it. We do only because of our close involvement with the victim and the baby.

Wife Greta continues to worsen. Keep her in your prayers. I have been looking at blogs to try to keep my mind free between prayers and sitting by her side. Next 48 hours are crucial.

My wife continues to decline. She was not supposed to go to the march for life but insisted and anyone who has seen her post knows that stopping her on anything to fight for life has a hard task. She just completed her second round of chemo in her fight with cancer a few weeks back and the doctors did not want her to go. We did everything possible in arranging a private plane and rooms near the center of everything, but she insisted on marching and if you were there, you know it was wet and cold. She returned home with a cold and now is fighting Pneumonia. Her condition and age are not working for her. She was to have gone back for more Chemo in a few weeks after tests confirmed the need last week before she left. Several very good priests friends came to our house today and we had mass here with her and family and friends. She is being attended in shifts by many of the women she has helped in deciding against abortion. We just completed the rosary using the Pope JPII CD she loves with all our grandchildren. She is resisting going to the hospital, but believe she will end up there before the night is out. She has several doctors who have spent the Sunday with her that have also been in the fight for life with her. I come here and to other blogs to get away for a moment. The Anchoress was her favorite because she felt like Elizabeth had the same love of life and the same fiesty spirit and love of the Church. When I told her I was heading in to post, she said to make sure I mentioned how much she loved this site and its author and to tell her now is the time to pour on the coals for life and this country for it is under attack as never before. With that, I will sign off.

My prayers and love to Mark and Greta.

While listening to several tributes to Etta James after her passing last week I realized that she is yet another American treasure who almost certainly would not have survived the womb had she been conceived after Roe v Wade. How many Etta’s have been saved by the work Greta has done? Only the Lord knows.
