In other News, Fulton Sheen is “Venerable” UPDATED

While the SCOTUS ruling was breaking, this story came over the wires, too:

Servant of God Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen is now “Venerable” after the Vatican announced today that Benedict XVI had signed a decree recognising that the archbishop heroically lived Christian virtues.

The announcement of the decree marks a significant step in the canonization cause of Peoria, Ill.-born Archbishop Sheen (1895-1979), the Emmy award-winning televangelist whose program, “Life is Worth Living,” was broadcast from 1951 to 1957.

The Vatican now has to recognise a miracle has occurred through his intercession for him to be beatified, the penultimate step to canonization. Alleged miracles have been reported, which are now being assessed by experts in Rome.

My parents loved him. Even my father who had no use for the church except for watching Midnight Mass from the Vatican, each Christmas.

Perhaps this theologian and teacher’s most famous quote:

“There are not 100 people who hate the Catholic Church; But there are millions who hate what they believe the Catholic Church to be.”

But I have a few other favorite quotes of his:

“Hearing nuns’ confessions is like being stoned to death with popcorn.”

“Jealousy is the tribute mediocrity pays to genius.”

His beatification may come sooner, rather than later, depending on the outcome of this investigation

Fr. Anthony Apostoli is quoted as saying: America is in need of a saint like Archbishop Sheen.

America is in need of many things; it can only help her, and particularly the church in America, to have a holy and clear-thinking American Catholic to look up to.

Like my dear Cardinal John Joseph O’ Connor, Sheen was of working-class Irish stock which I think is what made both of them so accessible; even though they were highly degreed and much-honored men, they never lost the common touch. I believe Sheen’s cause was begun under O’ Connor and they’re both buried in the crypt beneath St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York.
