Looking down on the Grotto
Franciscans incensing where the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary*

I was blessed to visit where the Annunciation took place. I figured that I should share some of the photographs of the grotto, and cave-like home, of the Theotokos on this day on which we celebrate this Solemnity. Over this site is built the Basilica of the Annunciation in the pretty crowded (these days) town of Nazareth. (more…)

Seven Sacraments Altar Piece (1445-1450), Rogier van der Weyden.
Seven Sacraments Altar Piece (1445-1450), Rogier van der Weyden.

I just ran across these thoughts by Reverend Jesse Brett over at my favorite electronic library. Oftentimes on Wednesdays  I like to feature a poem. But after reading these few paragraphs on the Sacraments, I realized that I should share them with you.

Brett is a bit of a mystery too, though I found out that he was the chaplain at All Saints Hospital in Eastbourne in the U.K. (in the 1920’s), I haven’t been able to uncover anymore information about him. How was he to know that almost 100 years after he wrote his book, I could share it with you via the interwebs? (more…)

The Church Of All Nations, in the Garden Of Gethsemane*

My wife and I have arrived home safe and sound from our pilgrimage trip to the Holy Land. While we were away these past two weeks, I haven’t read a newspaper or watched a television. Internet access was spotty, and even when it wasn’t the spirit to blog was willing, but the body was too weak to allow writing when sleep beckoned. (more…)

Whoa, Frank. Are you putting words in Pope Francis’s mouth?

No, dear reader. I’m just telling it like it is. You know how some folks can wax eloquent about truth, goodness, and beauty, and how the Church should make better art, etc? I have no skills in the fine arts, so I generally don’t write about such things. (more…)

My Eaton M112, surgically removed.
My Eaton M112, surgically removed.*

You probably think I’m off my rocker, but given how unsatisfying this month was shaping up to be, it was time for a break. A break from blogging, hand wringing, and all the other bad stuff happening in the world that I have absolutely no control over.

Did I also mention ridiculous silliness that passes for important stuff these days?

Right. (more…)

Coat_of_arms_Holy_See.svg It’s been a long time since I titled a post with that starts with the word “because.” But given what is happening on the world stage these days, especially across that swath of territory in the Middle East, where an ersatz caliphate is trying to establish itself, the fact that the Catholic Church has a diplomatic corps sets her apart. We were Marines once, and young…

I’m not sure if I will be much of a presence here over the next several days. There has been a death in my family, see, and my duties lie elsewhere. Loss is the cross we bear when we love someone, and they have gone on to eternity before us. (more…)

I don’t know the answer to either question, actually. Only they, and God, know. I mention it only because in a recent interview in Rolling Stone, Gates mentioned that he attends a Catholic Church with his wife Melinda, and that they have raised their children in the Church. As for Westboro Baptist’s founder, I learned that he is on his deathbed AND has been “excommunicated” from the church he started.

Let’s look at what the founder of Microsoft said first. (more…)

Great Battle in Heaven, by Daniel Mitsui.

And there was made a great battle in heaven, Michael and his Angels fought with the dragon, and the dragon fought and his Angels: and they prevailed not, neither was their place found any more in heaven. And that great dragon was cast forth, the old serpent, which is called the Devil and Satan, which seduceth the whole world: and he was cast into the earth, and his Angels were thrown down with him. —Revelation 12:7-9 (more…)
