Recapturing the vital place of one on one discipleship a session by Eddy Leo 2020-06-22T14:11:31+01:00

In this third session of our recent 300 Leaders conference, Eddy Leo reminded us of the need to spend time one-to-one to follow Jesus’ command to make disciples of all nations.  Here are some highlights:

  • The most effective tools for producing change are from best to least one to one > small groups > big meetings
  • Big meetings transfer a lot of knowledge. Decisions are made. But there’s a tendency not to apply it. Head gets swollen
  • “Small groups help a bit. But one to one is by FAR the most effective. Filling a bottle with a sprayhose doesn’t work well may be closed!”
  • Most pastors start a church and at the beginning spend time one on one with a few people. Those change rapidly and often become your leaders
  • “Discipleship is helping someone move from their present condition to the goal of Christlikeness.”
  • “We must teach people to Obey the Word of Christ, do the Works of Christ (building the church), get involved in the World mission of Christ”
  • “Discipleship is not about controlling others it’s about serving them to help them become disciples of Jesus.”
  • “The sermon on the mount was the first discipleship material. When you practice this there are powerful results. It’s all about the heart.”
  • “An orange tree doesn’t have to strive to produce oranges. It does it by nature. Our natures need to change.”
  • “To experience heart transformation you must understand the condition of your heart and mind. Focusing on outside deeds is Phariseeism.”
  • “Sometimes you need to listen to a sermon six times before it sinks into your heart and bear fruit”
  • The shortest version of the sermon on the mount is matt 13:4 parable of the sower. Wayside=Double minded, shallow, thorny, each is better. Lasting fruit is the sign of a true disciple. Good soil means it’s pure and receptive. The thorns and stones are gone. Good fruit comes.
  • A loving community is needed for removing the thorns. Don’t judge. Some attitudes are obvious but some sins can only be helped by others.
