The following interview with Hugh Palmer took place at New Word Alive 2008. I have already published the audio version, which is available here. AdrianI’m here with Hugh Palmer. HughHello! AdrianSo, Hugh, can I just say first of all what a fantastic week this has been—to go from a standing start to . . . how many people are here? HughPretty much 4,000. AdrianAnd it was all sold out within a matter of weeks, wasn’t it? HughYes. The site was... Read more

My grandfather, Edwin Warnock, was an evangelistic tent preacher. He was from Scotland, but came down to England, where he married a Londoner but lived in Suffolk. He and his wife Muriel had six children—five boys and one girl. Sadly, one of the boys died as a young man. But each of the others married, and all of them had at least two children.  There were a total of 13 first cousins of whom I am one.  Many of them... Read more

I found this great quote about what the gospel is meant to do to our opinions of ourselves from Tim Keller on “theocentricview“: “The Christian gospel is that I am so flawed that Jesus had to die for me, yet I am so loved and valued that Jesus was glad to die for me. This leads to deep humility and deep confidence at the same time. It undermines both swaggering and sniveling. I cannot feel superior to anyone, and yet... Read more

I want to share with you today a quote that I first put on this blog back in 2006. It is a quote which came towards the end of Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones’ life. It helps explain why his monumental series of sermons on Romans, which is available in mp3 and book form, stops at Romans 14:7. The Doctor was taken into hospital for emergency surgery due to bowel cancer after preaching the second of what was to be three sermons... Read more

I want to share three stories with you. The first happened right here at our home church. A woman who had previously had a melanoma removed was told, following a scan, that her cancer had returned, I believe in three places. I know this lady personally. We prayed. Following that, the doctors were unable to find the lump in her neck; it seemed to have disappeared and so could not be biopsied. That caused some consternation to the doctors. They... Read more

I only just managed to get the time to listen to John Piper’s Together for the Gospel conference message. As I discovered when I heard him in Wales, Piper is best experienced in the same room, but something of the anointing or unction came across, even in this recording. Piper’s passion is for his hearers to have radical Christian lives that persevere for decades and are heaven-focused. I hope that all of you will feel the urge to go and... Read more

This video was shown at New Word Alive. It is very funny, but I do want to point out to the authors of these books that I had absolutely NOTHING to do with producing this video! Read more

We need to be reminded again and again that our works are useless when it comes to impressing God. This was something that I was reminded of again at New Word Alive when Terry Virgo preached on grace, as well as in my preparation for a sermon I preached a few days before entitled Work, Rest, and Play. It has been a while since then, so I thought it would be a good time to remind me of this point... Read more

Here are notes from a sermon I preached on the 27th April at Jubilee Church. The mp3 is available to download here or listen to using the following embedded player- “You shall not murder.” (Ex 20:13) Ok, right at the outset, do we have any murderers here? No? Anyone planning on committing a murder? No? Good, so then we can all go home, yes? We got it straight, since we live in a Christian country means its Chicken for dinner... Read more

If you’re anything like me, and were at New Word Alive, or if you have listened to the audios online since that event, John Piper’s two talks on “Treasuring Christ and the Call to Suffer” may well still be resonating with you. You can read my notes on part 1 and part 2, of these messages, or listen to the audio at the following pages: Treasuring Christ and the Call to Suffer, Part 1 Treasuring Christ and the Call to... Read more
