“Black and Brown” Kids Shouldn’t Be Suspended?

Black-and-Latino-Students This is classic: A school is trying to get rid of racism… by being racist.

The Minneapolis public school system found out that it gives more suspensions to “black and brown” students than to white students – and that looks bad. So they came up with a new rule: whenever a black or brown kid gets a suspension, it’ll be automatically reviewed, by the state superintendent’s “leadership team.”

Just making sure everything is fair? Nope, the whole reason they made this rule is to make the number of minority suspensions go down. Whether they deserve a suspension or not doesn’t really matter.

Any other kids who get suspended are out of luck: no double-checking for white kids.

I guess Obama’s pressure “for school districts to get their numbers right, racial-disparity-wise,” is working.

The superintendent said this new rule will help to “equitably serve all students.” Call me crazy, but it looks like just the opposite!

Common sense says every kid should have to face the consequences of their own choices – no matter what color their skin is.

Discipline doesn’t work if it’s not applied fairly. Some kids will learn they don’t have to obey the rules all the time, and others will grow bitter that they’re held to a stricter standard. How will that help things??

And, oh yeah, discriminating based on someone’s race is also illegal.
