When I heard Scott Hahn was releasing a new book my immediate reaction was….this one goes on the review list. Like Dr. Hahn, I am also a convert to the Catholic faith, and have always found his books informative and well written and his latest release is no exception. Consuming the Word: The New Testament and The Eucharist in the Early Church is a book, that I feel is approachable for any level reader. In fact Scott has said he... Read more

I am admittedly a bit fanboy here but this week I have the pleasure of sharing my recent interview with Dr. Scott Hahn. PETE: Your new book Consuming the Word, spends some time on the Church Fathers. What lessons do they teach that you feel are the most important for our Church today? SCOTT HAHN: The Church always speaks of the Fathers as witnesses. They witness to the Apostolic Tradition, the faith handed on by the Apostles. It was the... Read more

Karol from Poland – The Life of Pope John Paul II for Children written by M. Leonora Wilson is just what the title says.  A biography of a boy named Karol from Poland  who grew up to become Pope John Paul II.  This story for young children begins with Karol’s early years learning about God from his mother.  These pages seem to be trying to teach the reader the same things Karol’s mother taught him.  This part of the book... Read more

My series of author interviews continues, this week with Brain Caulfield author of Man to Man, Dad to Dad: Catholic Faith and Family. PETE: What inspired you to compile this book? BRIAN CAUFIELD: The short answer is that there was nothing like it on the market and Pauline Books & Media decided to remedy that situation and publish a book for Catholic men and fathers, Man to Man, Dad to Dad: Catholic Faith and Family. We brought together 14 experts writing... Read more

Go to your local book store and you will find on the shelves, what seems to be, a million self-help books, some geared towards men. In Man to Man, Dad to Dad: Catholic Faith and FatherhoodBrian Caulfield has taken the formula and , in my opinion, improved it. Brian has assembled a group of impressive names to help Catholic men attain the ultimate goal, a place in heaven for them and their families. What I found most interesting about this... Read more

My wife steps in today to provide a review. Courageous Women for Teens: A Study on the Heroines of Biblical History by Stacy Mitch and Emily Stimpson will take your daughter on an enjoyable trip through salvation history with special focus on the women of the Bible. This 87 page book is in no way overwhelming and is broken nicely into 8 manageable lessons. This Bible study chronologically covers the women, many from Jesus’ ancestral line, over the many stages... Read more

I first learned of Ken Howell and his Early Christian Fathers books when I interviewed Mike Aquilina in April. That interview can be found here. When Mike Aquilina, whom I consider an authority on the Early Church Fathers, recommends a book it’s a good idea to check it out. You will not be disappointed with this one. There are actually two volumes in the series thus far. This review will concentrate on the first volume, Ignatius of Antioch & Polycarp... Read more

Journeys with Mary – Apparitions of Our Lady by Zerlina De Santis is part of the Encounter the Saints Series published by Pauline Books.  This book is a wonderful collection of nine Marian apparition stories for young children.  The book states that these have all been approved by the Church.  The length of each story ranges from 6-16 pages with five of them containing an accompanying full page picture. (My daughter just wishes each story had such a lovely illustration... Read more

Yesterday I posted my review of Strange Gods : Unmasking the Idols in Everyday Life. You can find that review here. I was really excited when Elizabeth Scalia, The Anchoress, agreed to take some time out of her busy schedule to answer a few questions. So without further ado….here is my latest author interview. Q: With a rather large and steady following on the internet, best known there as the Anchoress, how did you find time to write a book?... Read more
