I have gotten to know Bryan over the years and he has a knack for academic publishing. He has pretty good people skills (above average for academics!), a sharp sense for a fresh idea, and (gulp) he is not afraid to say “pass.” True to his personality, in this interview Bryan is “to the point,” with incisive insight and a bit of dry wit. Enjoy! I was asked to introduce pronunciation into my posts for readers from other countries, so... Read more
Over the years, I have tried to collected volumes from the excellent series Baylor Handbook on the Greek New Testament. They work well as textbooks or aids for students and as a commentary writer myself, I have turned to many of these for consultation. The latest volume in the series is on Philippians, written by Baylor University professor of New Testament, Lidija Novakovic. Novakovic is up-to-date on cutting edge conversations in Greek studies, such as verbal aspect and discourse features. The BHGNT... Read more
I have known Katya for a good long while. I enjoy our yearly SBL meal (sad we have to skip this year). She knows a ton about the academic publishing world and I have learned a lot from her insight and experience. She helped me with my Zondervan Critical Introduction to the New Testament 1-2 Thessalonians volume, and we are working together on a few new things. Katya is professional, witty, and collegial—take notes on her wise counsel. Enjoy! Katya... Read more
We are continuing our series interviewing publishing editors from top publishers in biblical studies. Enjoy this conversation with Dr. Steve Wiggins, editor, Oxford University Press. I wish someone had given me this kind of advice and insight ten years ago! Tell us about yourself and your background. How much time do you have? Here goes: I earned my Ph.D. from Edinburgh University and immediately got hired to teach in a seminary. I held a full-time teaching position for 14 years when... Read more

Recently I reviewed the new Cambridge Companion to St. Paul (July 2021; ed. Bruce Longenecker). Now, we are anticipating the publication of the second edition of the Cambridge Companion to the Gospels, edited by Stephen Barton and Todd Brewer (Feb 2021). I recall how helpful the first edition was for my own understanding of the gospels and the state of scholarship at an accessible level (2006). The editor of the first edition—and one of the co-editors of the second edition—Stephen Barton, was... Read more
There are some folks who think the production of new commentaries series is foolish or bound to fail. But I am on the side that has always appreciated commentaries and I welcome new perspectives and fresh contributions. Eerdmans has a long and distinguished reputation for producing sterling commentaries, not least NICNT, NIGTC, and Two Horizons series. Eerdmans is announcing a new series called Commentaries for Christian Formation (CCF). Here is the series description: The Commentaries for Christian Formation (CCF) series serves a central... We continue with the second profile in our new series: The Editors behind the Great Books in New Testament studies. I am pleased to introduce you to Dr. James Ernest (Eerdmans). We became friends while he was an acquisitions editor at Baker. He brought in my book Beginner’s Guide to New Testament Studies just before he moved to Eerdmans. He is sharp, thoughtful, and has a long and tenured history in the publishing world. In this interview, James is witty, informative, and... Read more
