“Such discourse has no place on the lips of those who confess Christ or who claim to be civilized members of society.” The Archbishop of Washington, Wilton Gregory, speaks out in an interview:  What is your reaction to the controversy over President Trump’s tweets on some members of Congress, deploring Baltimore and related matters?  In my brief time in Washington, I have been doing a lot of listening and learning. I have promised to try to preach the Gospel, tell... Read more

Wow: Archaeologists believe they have likely found the Church of the Apostles, which Christian tradition says had been built over the home of Jesus’ disciples Peter and Andrew in the village of Bethsaida, today part of the Bteikha Nature Reserve, by the Sea of Galilee. The archaeologists, from the Kinneret Academic College and Nyack College of New York, said the Jewish village of Bethsaida on which the Roman city of Julias had been built was much larger than had been... Read more

This may surprise some people, from Father John Kladar:   It has been just over six weeks since I was ordained a Catholic priest for the Diocese of Rockford on June 1st, 2019. Since then, I have been able to celebrate over sixty masses, anoint several people, preside over a couple of funerals, and baptize one child. I also attended two friend’s ordination to the priesthood in Madison, Wisconsin, and Wishaw, Scotland. While all of these pastoral opportunities have impacted me... Read more

From the BBC:  The first image of Sir Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce in The Two Popes has been released, and it’s definitely intriguing. The upcoming movie is “inspired by” real events, distributor Netflix has said. Hopkins stars as Pope Benedict and Pryce co-stars as Cardinal Bergoglio, a man he doesn’t exactly see eye-to-eye with. In the first look photo, the two Roman Catholic leaders are captured in what looks like a conspiratorial moment. Netflix’s official plot synopsis teases: “Frustrated with the direction of the church, Cardinal Bergoglio (Pryce)... Read more

I got the following email from deacon candidate Mike DeMoully: Haven’t seen this on your blog yet, but on July 20, 2019, 11 men from Class XVIII were ordained to the Permanent Diaconate by Archbishop Michael Jackels at St. Raphael Cathedral in Dubuque.  As a member of Class XX, to be ordained in four years Lord willing, I was privileged to have been invited to this event. I haven’t been able to find any pictures of this event yet, but... Read more

My friend and diaconal sibling from the East, Father Deacon Daniel Dozier, posted the following proposal on Facebook. I repost here with his kind permission. He titled it: “Possible Solution to the Question of Deaconesses?” Personally, I have my doubts. But he has some interesting ideas. See what you think. *** I may have a possible solution for the question of Deaconesses in contemporary Catholic life. My thinking on this is as a Deacon who is concerned about the varying... Read more

“Good leaders lift up, call people together, and bring out the best in them. Mr. President, in the name of all that is good, healthy and decent, stop putting people down.”  The signatories include Archbishop William Lori and Bishop Dennis Madden, along with leaders of other Christian churches. The text:  July 29, 2019 To the President of the United States: As the judicatory heads of a number of Christian denominations in Maryland, we want you to know that many of... Read more
