Once upon a time, there was this little book called 3 Gates of the Dead. The writer despaired that it would never see the light of day after two agents exploded on him. Then, his amazing friend, Italia Gandolfo, became his amazing agent and she went to work. She found a new, cutting edge publisher in Los Angeles called Premier Publishing, with an incredible board of highly accomplished executives, including super-agent Joel Gotler. The company started off as a... Read more

So, in Part 1, I unapologetically lavished praise on J. R. R. Tolkien’s masterpiece—a masterpiece among masterpieces, yea a towering feat of literary and fantasy profundity: The Silmarillion. A few of you chuckled compassionately.  A few of you nodded gravely.  A few of you rolled your eyes.  To all of you I say: read it again! And now, as promised, I shall tantalize Lord of the Rings fans with a “Did You Know?” apéritif that should get you to order... Read more

Part one of four? I expect to keep the reader’s attention for four parts? Am I crazy? I probably am. But that has nothing to do with the fact that any self-respecting fantasy fan or “geek” of any kind would do very well to examine this study of one of the great pillars of geekdom… Circa 2004— I inched my way through another dreary commute. Heart yearning for something, anything to distract me from the inescapable life-sucking vortex, I fumbled... Read more

(I  (Jo Schaffer) met Daniel Swenson(aka Revan)at the LTUE writing conference in Provo, Utah. He sat at a table with a bunch of microphones interviewing authors and attendees at the event. Curious, I stopped to chat with him. Turns out he runs the fabulously geeky, Dungeon Crawler Radio. I later had the opportunity to be interviewed on the show along with Jonathan Ryan. We talked a little bit about Teen Author Boot Camp, comic books and movies. (The Man... Read more

Here is a straightforward fact; Amazon is helping make my writing career through the huge success of 3 Gates of the Dead. I know there are a lot of people who beat the “anti-Amazon” drum with intense fervor. In truth, I used to be one of them until I realized the absolute hypocrisy of doing so. I’m not saying Amazon doesn’t have some complicating things that go along with their business model. Others have written about it in a much... Read more

For four years, I spent time hanging out with atheists at The Ohio State University. I started a group called The Thomas Society (after St. Thomas the Doubter) where everyone was welcome. Our weekly meetings often consisted of atheists, agnostics, Christians, Jewish rabbis, and an odd assortment of students from campus. As I look back on it, I realize this sort of thing doesn’t happen much. During the meetings, I adopted a “no question off limits” and “no edit policy”... Read more

It’s official. God’s Not Dead, released by Pure Flix Entertainment, has been nothing short of a financial smash success, raking in over $8 million in its first three days. Opening in just 780 theaters nation-wide, the film made close to $3 million on its Friday release date alone, en route to cementing itself as the number three movie of the weekend. I guess this is the part where I admit to being way off base in part one of my review,... Read more

As a freelance book reviewer, I’ve read my fair share of books.  Who am I kidding?  More than my fair share.  And I must confess, I don’t always like what I read.  It happens. I used to force myself to finish any book that I had started, because books are an investment at $7.99 a piece, and like it or not, I had to get my money’s worth.  A funny thing happens though, when you become a book reviewer.  You... Read more
