If Jesus does not support marriage equality, then the Jesus that evangelicals taught me about is not the real Jesus. In my preschool years, we sang of a God that loved the world. In my young adult years, we talked about loving our neighbors as our self. In my education at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, we were taught how to take the good news of Jesus to the world. All of the hate, homophobia and bad news I consistently hear being spewed by people opposed to marriage equality has nothing to do with God’s love for us, our love for our neighbors or our responsibility to take the good news of Jesus to the world. What are we thinking? We have the opportunity to love God and we are choosing to worship bigotry. We have the opportunity to love people and we are choosing hate. We have the opportunity to share good news and we are addicted to bad news. We all need to get saved. I ‘m working so that no one gets left behind in the bad news of bigotry and hate. I can’t imagine a world were my dearest friends continue to be treated like shit. I can’t imagine a world where my three young children can’t love who they love. I can’t imagine a world where people are left to drown in their own ignorance. Today is the day of salvation. Let’s pray that our fellow evangelicals get saved for the sake of our friends, children and everyone else. Amen.
