Sacred Heart of Jesus – St. James Church in Falls Church, Virginia – photo by John Clem

I’m feeling overwhelmed today. It’s likely the cumulative effect of the end of a busy week, the end of a busy month, a massive to do list in preparation for our upcoming epic road trip, and work being done on the outside of my house. Regardless of the reasons, I woke up today feeling both exhausted and cranky.

And then I made my way to my morning prayer time, and today’s Gospel passage from Matthew 11 wrapped its arms around me like a warm hug:

“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened,
and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
for I am meek and humble of heart;
and you will find rest for yourselves.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”

Seriously, God is so good. I can whine and complain that there is never enough time or energy to do His precious will, and God will always find a way to gently and lovingly remind me that he will never expect more of me than I can handle. God has created me to do his work. His yoke will never be more burdensome than what he has uniquely and lovingly designed me to bear.

I run into problems when I begin to confuse God’s will for my own. His yoke is easy, his burden light. Mine, not so much.

He loves us, even when (or perhaps especially when) we are burdened. He will give us rest.
