Living in the Tension – Mon. 5/6

We will be meeting for our next Living in the Tension gathering this upcoming Monday, May 6, at 7pm. We’ll be discussing the recent events and reactions around Jason Collins and the #1 draft pick in the WNBA, Brittney Griner, recently coming out. The two were met with remarkably different reactions in news outlets, so we’ll take some time to discuss our thoughts on the different treatment. Is there some type of a double standard at play? Does it have anything to do with stereotypes or transgressing gender norms? Are there reasons that Griner’s coming out (along with many other professional female athletes) is not deemed a major news story?

If you’re available beforehand, we’ll be meeting at Lady Gregory’s on 5260 N. Clark St. at 5:15pm to hang out and have a bite to eat. Then we’ll head over to Room 124 on 5255 N. Ashland Ave. for the gathering.
