Super Bowl Entertainment and Evangelical Outrage

Super Bowl Entertainment and Evangelical Outrage February 3, 2020

Screen cap from YouTube

Just like the yearly return of swallows to Capistrano the entertainment at the Super Bowl controversy among Evangelicals has happened yet again. I woke up this morning to the outraged Christian masses over the performances of Jennifer Lopez and Shakira.

They never say a thing when the entertainment is male, just for the female performers.

Lori Alexander jumped the gun on protesting the performances yesterday before they even happened.

Not surprising. We all know that Lori  loves to do herself some horrific slut-shaming on any woman showing thighs but herself. In other words water is wet.

But she is hardly the only one. I witnessed this morning oodles of Evangelical outrage among people I know. I cannot judge because I did not see any of the performances because we lost power and internet after the first quarter, but I figured it was the same old Shakira and Jlo rump shaking and singing. I would have only watched Shakira. I like her music.

The costumes looked fun.

So, what did you think? Paving the road to twerking pole-humping hell, or just business as usual with the NFL?

Here’s a pile of outraged reactions from some QF folks I know.

I’m not sure how singing and dancing in a costume that is no different than that worn by professional figure skaters or Olympic athletes ridicules femininity. Exhibiting any female sexuality is too threatening for this crowd apparently.

I didn’t notice any of these same people protesting when the Who played the Super Bowl and Roger Daltrey took off his shirt defrauding me and countless others. Why the outrage when they know what to expect, why not just turn it off?

  • Finding Home

It’s going to take evangelicals a long time to understand that they burned their platform of supposed moral superiority to the ground and no one cares to hear what they have to say anymore.

  • Allison the Great

It’s really immature for these people to think that every form of entertainment has to cater specifically to them, and then have the nerve to be outraged when it doesn’t. It revels that they think they are way more important than everyone else.

Nobody is holding a gun2 to their heads and forcing them to watch. If they don’t want to watch half time shows they don’t have to. I didn’t watch the game at all. I watched Netflix. I think they only watch TV because they are looking for a reason to be angry and offended. They can fuck2 right off and grow the fuck1 up!

  • Nea

Oh, I’m sure that the pearl-clutching crew has an equal amount of the vapors over women’s sports, especially gymnastics (which is what pole dancing is, really) and skating.

For all of their constant admonitions to Look Good For Your Man, I bet none of them are as fit at 50 as JLo is.

  • Allison the Great

I don’t think they will understand. Self-awareness is not really a strength they possess. They’re a bunch of children who think they have the right to tell everyone else how to live their lives.

  • Nea

They never had that platform. Hasn’t stopped them.

  • I thought they paid Harvey Weinstein to produce this year’s superbowl half-time show.

  • Aloha 2

The show was also somewhat political. They put kids in cages, spoke Spanish, and showed pride for Puerto Rico.

I wonder how much outrage is actually relevant to this political commentary?

  • Steven Watson

How many switched channels or off?

  • Raging Bee

The critics keep using the word “disappointing.” WHAT DID THEY EXPECT?

And what was so “gross” about having an 11-year-old (gender unspecified) watching the show next to you? That commenter was pretty vague about it, so it must’ve been REALLY shocking and embarrassing…for someone…

  • steve

I hope there weren’t any children watching …

You mean other than yourself ?

  • WallofSleep

“It was more than a little gross to have my 11 year old sitting here while some man was pretending to smack JLOs [censored] while she [danced]. Not cool.”

But having your 11 year old watch grown men in tights actually smack each other on the [censored] while beating the snot out of each other is perfectly cool.

  • Friend

I hope there weren’t any children watching the half time show

Absolutely not! Children never watch the Super Bowl! No child has ever heard of Shakira or J Lo. Rest assured, no eyeballs under 18 saw a single thing.

  • Friend

    Her outfit was sooo unnecessary

Unnecessary. So she should have removed it? I’m soooo confused.

  • Raging Bee

Did they say anything about the cheerleaders’ outfits?

  • Raging Bee

    And that means…what?

  • DoctorDJ

And the knickers of the Court Evangelicals are all in a twist.
    e.g. Frankie Graham. https://www.facebook.com/FranklinGraham/posts/3027376090651885

Hemant has an excellent summary of Billy’s kid.
Evangelist Franklin Graham, never has a nasty word to say about Donald Trump. He proudly condones the pussy-grabbing, multiple marriages, hush money payments, children in cages, cruelty, ignorance, racism, and debasing of the office — at least Graham never thinks of those things as dealbreakers — in exchange for the proximity of power and a never-ending supply of federal judges.

Okay, so I’ll ask it here: Why the AF did the 49ers PUNT in the last six minutes of the game?! They were ahead by 4, and they had plenty of time to score another touchdown, but instead they literally gave the game away. Who’s their head coach, Michael Dukakis?

  • digital bookworm

I tried looking up how much Christian outrage there was over Michael Jackson’s Superbowl (crotch-grabbing) halftime show. I came up empty handed.

  • Tawreos

Of course, two women get all the anger. Not the players who are paid obscene amounts of money to play a game. Not the advertisers that spent ridiculous amounts of money to sell stuff. Not the fans that paid exorbitant amounts of money to be there to watch it. Nope, all the ire is saved for the two ladies that were in outfits that were perfectly fine, and could even make them overdressed if worn to the beaches of Miami. Maybe they should be asking how did such “skimpy” outfits make it on national TV if this is the christian nation that they keep claiming it is.

  • Tawreos

They made the comments but didn’t make them in public because they didn’t want to be accused of racism.

  • Tawreos

Quick random shots don’t allow them to work up the outrage that a 15 minute performance does.

  • Nea

Probably not, but I can’t resist pointing out right now that Ma Duggar used to be a cheerleader. According to her children, she “didn’t know” that she was giving the boys pants feels.

Which makes me wonder how many of the kids secretly think that Ma is either a hypocrite (yes she knew) or a total fool.

  • ron_goodman

There was a story on today’s Washington Post site about Shakaira’s ululation(she is of Lebanese ancestry) in one of her songs. Evidently it distressed a fair number of MAGAbillies.

  • The Bofa on the Sofa

My 11 and 9 yo sons were watching. They never said anything about it during the show and didn’t say anything about it afterward. They were more concerned about what commercials were coming up. They liked the Alexa commercial with Ellen most.

  • AFo

If I still look and move like these two women when I’m their age, you better believe I’m gonna be flaunting the sh!t2 out of it, especially knowing that it’s p!ss!ng off pearl-clutchers like Lori.

  • Milo C

I hope they were inspired by JLo’s daughter (I think?) up on stage singing with them.

  • Desperate Ambrose

    Wait a minute.

There was a football game yesterday?

  • Raging Bee

I’m willing to bet they were absolutely HORRIFIED by the sight of any younger kids following such a satanic ungodly example. Maybe that’s what that concerned parent found “gross” — her 11-year-old either liked the younger girls (if he was a boy) or wanted to be one (if a girl).

  • Milo C

If I recall that moment, failure to run or pass would have meant putting the Chiefs on the 30 yard line instead of the 80. Punting wasn’t something they wanted to do, but I’m sure they wanted to avoid getting to 4th down and 8 yards to make, too, and yet there they were.

  • Raging Bee

So why didn’t they try to run or pass? It’s not like they’re the Redskins; they did have a good chance of succeeding at either one.

  • katiehippie

That’s the one that cracked me up.

  • katiehippie

Why are they watching football at all? Shouldn’t they be too busy with their godly tasks?

  • johnsoncatman

I would further bet that none of them at 30 are as fit as JLo is at 50.

  • johnsoncatman

    ESPECIALLY on a Sunday!!!

  • Tawreos

You don’t get kudos from other christians for doing what you are supposed to do, but you can get them for proving you are outraged at the right things.

  • Tawreos

It was that thing that kept interrupting all the awesome commercials and an awesome musical number. =)

  • Martin Penwald

her 11-year-old either liked the younger girls (if he was a boy) or wanted to be one (if a girl).

” her 11-year-old either liked the younger girls (if she was a girl) or wanted to be one (if a boy).”

    Note that it works too.

  • Raging Bee

Maybe we only got quick random shots of cheerleaders because of orchestrated complaints like Lori’s, and they’re trying to repeat that success with the halftime show.

  • Martin Penwald

    Especially a sunday!

  • Raging Bee

True, but that’s LIGHTYEARS outside of what their delicate brains can handle. Let’s stick to what’s closest to their comfort-zones, at least for now…

  • Martin Penwald

    That’s absolutely outrageous!
This gas guzzling car should be wrecked and replaced by a Prius!

  • Martin Penwald

I’m on the opinion of shaking the tree as much as I can 🙂

  • Raging Bee

In fairness, I’m sure Lori and friends were angry at ALL of the women on the stage, not just the two up front.

  • Martin Penwald

    Isn’t there one every sunday?

  • Raging Bee

IIRC most of the outrage was expressed in phone calls and other messages to the FCC.

  • Raging Bee

“ZOMG Y’ALL MADE ME GET THE HOTS FOR CHICKS MY MOTHER’S AGE! I’M SO TRAUMATIZED!! HOW AM I GONNA HANDLE MY CONFLICTING FEELINGS THAT I NEVER LEARNED HOW TO PROCESS?!!!” EDIT: Asking for a friend.

  • Dom S

I mean, what do they want? Do they want nuns to perform at the next SuperBowl? Sure, that won’t put everyone watching to sleep. Hell, some people were bored to sleep by this performance.

  • (((J_Enigma32)))

I didn’t notice any of these same people protesting when the Who played the Super Bowl and Roger Daltrey took off his shirt defrauding me and countless others.

I don’t notice any of these “for the children” types calling out the Trump administration for throwing children into cages where they are literally left to die in concentration camps along the southern border, the cuts to various social programs that ensure children have food and a healthcare, and undermining the education system so they can be functioning members of society.

‮kcuF‬ man, most of these self-righteous pieces of ‮tihs‬ probably support him for those reasons. Spare me the performative outrage, you disgusting hypocrites.

  • (((J_Enigma32)))

they didn’t want to be accused of racism.

There’s a first. Most of the time, these people will wear that accusation like a badge of honor rather than figure out why they might get called such and change their behavior.

  • Yummy!

  • Hey! Don’t knock Baby!

  • Tawreos

This was a few years before Trump made it fashionable.

  • Suzanne Harper Titkemeyer

Oh lawdy! So Lori wasn’t content to rail before it began. She posted earlier about how it glorifies sex trafficking and has now taken to the YouTubes to express her disgust – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_PCx7Y8cus&feature=youtu.be&fbclid=IwAR3pJUZc0CEZJGx3jocEJ1y5y-mUmnu539XU2RqtGyUfK28WUJqK18L0V68

  • Ruthitchka

Not to mention the numerous football players, past and present, who physically and emotionally abuse their wives, or put dogs in illegal dogfights, or blow2 their millions on drugs, or….

  • WallofSleep

    https://media.giphy.com/media/RbOAKqkDCeP4I/giphy.gif

I so want one like her. Mostly because she’s old enough that I’m fairly certain I could wrench on her with confidence.

  • WallofSleep

More than support him for tearing apart families and leaving their children in cages to die, those evil [censored]s actually quoted scripture to justify it.

  • Rann

I am getting a headache from all the face palms from Superbowl Sunday!

  • Friend

Yes, bring back the nuns!!!!!! Here’s the halftime show from Super Bowl I:

Blasphemy! They have a guitar! /s

  • Dom S

    Shoot. Me. Now.

  • B.A.

This reminds me of the hoopla over Janet Jackson’s “wardrobe malfunction” a while back. The way these people carried on,you’d have thought the world was coming to an end. That story was on the front pages for a whole week–longer than Kobe’s passing. So,I guess this just goes to show, they’re more worried about some singer’s costume than people dying tragically. Especially if they’re POC.

  • B.A.

The right is also bishing about Beyonce,Jay-Z,and their young daughter sitting during the national anthem,in accordance with Colin Kaepernick’s protests against police violence. I don’t see what the big deal is;this country still allows freedom of expression.

  • B.A.

I was born in Jan.1964,when this song was a huge hit. My parents actually wrote it in my baby book, under the category,”Popular Song”. When I got older,I asked them why they didn’t include ANY Beatles songs–the Beatles had 5 No. 1’s at the time! I’m still a Beatles fanatic.
P.S. I also heard that The Singing Nun committed suicide many years later.

  • Dom S

    Oh my God. That’s dark…

  • B.A.

According to her Wikipedia page, she had a “close female friend” with whom she was buried. I’m sure we know what that means. I don’t know why Wiki couldn’t just be honest about it.

  • Whitney Currie

Well, I think we can take this as proof positive that Lori Alexander has no idea what the Striesand effect is. *sigh*

  • WallofSleep

Because Wikipedia pages can be edited by just about anyone, and there are a large number of people dedicated to promoting the lie that “that sort of thing never happens in our cult”.

  • frostysnowman

I’d love to know what she thinks about the female assistant offensive line coach on the 49’ers.

She’s correct about sex trafficking on Super Bowl Sunday but the point is completely lost in the rest of her drivel.

  • frostysnowman

As did all the singing in Spanish. Not allowed in ‘Murica.

  • Friend

Well. First of all, that’s a lady wearing pants. Then she’s getting paid. And her hair is part crewcut. So we don’t even need to get to the obvious bit.

  • Whitney Currie

Well, when your holy book gives you directions on how to handle slaves, there probably isn’t much you can’t justify with it.

  • Saraquill

No outrage for the football players? Tight pants, exaggerated shoulders, lots of “presenting,” grappling, submission…

  • Saraquill

Or get discarded when they’re too injured to make a profit.

  • Saraquill

Palm Sunday. It all makes sense now! /tease

  • Friend

Sure, if you’re a literalist. Doug Wilson is in a tiny minority of American Christians who still try to use the Bible to justify slavery1. Even the most cray-cray of the fundies don’t think multiple wives and c0ncubines are a good idea…

  • HematitePersuasion

    Hypocrites gonna hypocrite.

  • njguy54

Yeah… wonder what Trump thought of JLo and Shakira?

  • njguy54

When I was growing up in the 70s, my parents listened to a lot of “easy listening” radio — the Muzak type you don’t hear anymore. That song was one of the standards.

  • njguy54

Folks from your (any my) parents’ generation didn’t consider the Beatles or any rock and roll to be “real” music. At most, they saw them as a passing fad. If you went back in time to 1964 and told people that in 2020 kids would still be listening to the Beatles, the Stones, etc, they’d throw you in a rubber room faster than you could say “Beatlemania”

  • Mel

I actually said “Oh, yeah. It’s that time of year again, isn’t it?” at my job. I’m not a professional sports enthusiast, lol.

  • Erp

Or flaunting the Puerto Rican flag while singing Born in the USA. The kids in cages (subtle enough to be deniable) seems to have gone over their heads.

  • Desperate Ambrose

    Damfino.

  • Keith Taylor

These are the same people who enthusiastically support Donald Trump no matter what? Mr. Grab-’em-by-the-Pussy, accused by about two dozen women of molesting them and by at least one — to the point of a civil lawsuit — of raping her in tandem with Epstein while she was under age?
I suspect I know what really offends them. J-lo wearing a cloak that has a U.S. flag on one side and a Puerto Rican flag on the other while singing “Born in the U.S.A.” And the half-time show also having a tableau that suggests children in cages.
You want offensive and really, REALLY obscene? That’s it. Courtesy of the President.

  • Martin Penwald

The only French song to made it in the top 40.

EDIT: no, the only French song to be first in the charts in the U.S.

  • Raging Bee

Facepalm Sunday? Sounds like a new Catholic Sacrament.

  • Martin Penwald

The French page tells that she didn’t considered herself as homosexual, but it was in the 70’s. There is no doubt she was.
She left the order only two years after her success, in 1966. After that, she wrote some very anti-patriarcal stuff.

  • Rann

But Saraquil, it’s too early for Palm Sunday!!!!

  • Rann

she “didn’t know” that she was giving the boys pants feels

Michelle Duggar may be a number of things but THAT stupid, she ain’t!!!!

  • It can’t be that bad…

Oh. My. Cats. It is that bad.

  • Jennny

I’m a simple soul, simple answer, don’t watch it if you don’t like it. Better still, get rid of your TV altogether. Isn’t that what Debi et al say we should do to be True X-tians?
Anecdote: Teacher-husband was at a Parents Evening at an all-boys school. Important exams were looming and it was waaaay back when kids first began to get portable TVs in their bedrooms. Three sets of parents complained their sons watched TV rather than doing homework. Scientist-husband leaned over to them and said confidentially, ‘Don’t know if you know this, TV’s have a dial at the front, it says ‘On/Off’ on it. have you tried that? He also offered to pay home visits with a hammer…..shouldn’t Lori et al do the same and set us all a good example?

  • Tawreos

Don’t forget, her job as a coach is to teach men. And that is only for good christian women like Lori to do, while denying she is doing so.

  • Tawreos

I’m not that sure, she did seem to think that some carpentry and prayer would cure Josh.

  • Friend

And telegrams. People sent thousands of telegrams.

Proper Handegg started this weekend as well, Wales slaughtered Italy in the 6 Nations. Cymru am byth!

  • Brian Davis

Some of us are old enough to remember the snooze-fest of wholesomeness that was the Up With People Super Bowl halftime shows. They were just the kind of thing that QFs would consider appropriate family entertainment.

  • Susan Montgomery

Didn’t JLo die sometime in the ’00s or ’10s or am I thinking of someone else?

  • Raging Bee

I believe that’s when she became a vampire in order to keep her youth.

  • Susan Montgomery

    🙂

  • B.A.

Actually, my folks watched the Beatles about 3 weeks later on the Ed Sullivan Show, and Mom got hooked! She loves telling this story. She was only 25 when I was born and she discovered Motown not long after. By the early 70s,I remember her and Dad playing the rock stations on our road trips. They evolved, thank goodness.

  • Martin Penwald

Or when they take a knee.

What would be the fun in not watching the thing you hate?

You might be thinking of Whitney Houston, she died in 2012

  • Brian Westley

Wisconsin is the child rapist capital of the USA.( The FFRF)

  • Susan Montgomery

No, I knew about that. I could have sworn that someone young and with a trendy, abbreviated name died as well.

  • Secret’s out, @disqus_s1kgRERhra, you unconvincing impersonator of other humans. We know who you actually are.

  • otrame

No,she thought carpentry and prayer would keep him out of the public eye long enough for her fans to pretend to forget all about it.

  • Iain Lovejoy

Here’s my theory as to what outrages in particular fundangelical women:
J-Lo and co when they dance are obviously enjoying both their own bodies and the “aesthetic appreciation” they produce, and it is their own obvious enjoyment of what they are doing which is fundamental to its attractiveness. The reaction of fundangelical women to this is false outrage I think in truth arising from envy and fear. They dimly see in the attitude displayed on screen hints of what real passion is, that it is pleasure and desire provoking mutual pleasure and desire and provoking further desire in return. This is impossible in the framework of a fundangelical marriage where s3x is one-way transaction, a privilege of the husband to be dutifully granted by the wife. They know this, and are both (at least subconsciously) envious that they have repressed and cannot have anything like this feeling themselves, and fearful that their husbands seeing the passion in these women will see the lack of true passion in themselves.

  • otrame

The best part is that J-Lo was wearing a leotard that went to her knees (you can see it in some photos because it doesn’t reflect light quite like skin does). It was the same color as her skin, true, but she was basically wearing Bermuda shorts out there.

  • otrame

I liked the Jason Momoa one.

Okay, it’s the only one I actually saw, on YouTube. But it was cute as h3ll.

  • otrame

That was Florence Joiner, Flo-Jo. She was a very popular athlete.

  • persephone

More recently, Adam Levine, and Flea and Anthony Kiedis of Red Hot Chili Peppers performed shirtless. Also, a lot of NFL cheerleaders have costumes even more revealing, and not a word against them. A lot of it was because JLo and Shakira are Latinx, and Shakira is also Lebanese, so it fell under racism, and the POC are dangerously s3kxual and trying to steal away your WASP spouse, and make them like s3kx, and take them away from your cold fundagelical bed.

  • persephone

A lot of those players aren’t making exorbitant amounts of money. You have the Tom Bradys raking it in, but the average lineman isn’t making all that much, especially considering the likelihood of permanent brain damage and physical breakdown and possible death from steroid induced cancer.

  • persephone

Oh, it was definitely racism. Lot of people on twitter mad when we pointed out that Puerto Ricans are citizens.

  • persephone

I learned how to do that when I studied belly dancing, but our instructor had us hold our hands over our mouths.

  • persephone

You can’t fit all those guns and bodies in a Prius.

  • persephone

So dang pretty. I’m going to miss this show.

Sounds like that would make your mom (almost) a baby boomer. Whereas my parents were much older, and firmly part of the Silent Generation.

Not Silent about the Beatles, though, were they? I remember a lot of yammering about “that yeah-yeah-yeah music.”

    Oh yeah…

  • Sassafras

I’ve explained to a few people that my biological is NOT an immigrant because Puerto Rican’s ARE US citizens.

  • Sassafras

My sister posted a rant years back when Madonna performed the halftime show. “If Madonna was younger, you guys wouldn’t be making such a hissy fit!”

  • Zeldacat

As a teenager my mother managed to win a radio call-in contest for a front-row Beatles ticket. Their last US tour. One ticket. FRONT ROW. Her father HATED the Beatles and insisted the family go camping on the weekend of the concert. It went to a friend, who reportedly touched Paul. To this day, if you as much as mention it to her or my aunt, they both go up in FLAMES OF FURY. I don’t blame them!

(Never mind the fight to the death it would have been between her and my aunt over which one of them ended up using the ticket. Two girls enter, one girl leaves!)

  • Jennifer

It is gross that some man was pretending to do that. JLo wasn’t inviting anyone to touch her.

  • Jennifer

I think plenty are angry over abusive players.

  • Jennifer

    Which outfit?

  • Jennifer

People finally started bringing up the other people who died in the crash, including his daughter.

  • Wisdom, Justice, Love

And they won’t be telling other by way of EXAMPLE. It’ll be brow beating from the sidelines. Pay no attention to our behavior, pay attention to the book I claim to live by.

  • Wisdom, Justice, Love

Particularly as someone mentions getting the plank out their own eye.
    Anointed Hypocrisy.

  • Wisdom, Justice, Love

Christian women like these like feeling desirable to their mate without desire include recreational sex. They feel threatened when any woman gets sexual attention from their men. It allows them to blame the Jezebel for tempting men; the men themselves are victims.

The attitude of total submission backfires the longer the marriage goes on. If you are nothing more than a submissive tool (my wrench, TV, appliance does whatever I “command” it to do) then you will be overlooked by the newer shinier appliance. One “solution” is to constantly churn out children, like the Duggars.
