Disgraced reality TV star Josh Duggar has checked himself into a long term treatment center after being implicated in multiple salacious scandals.
News of Duggar entering rehab comes only six days after he admitted to living a “double life” in a statement confirming his involvement with Ashley Madison, the infamous website for individuals interested in arranging extramarital affairs.
In that statement Duggar confessed to his hypocrisy and his betrayal:
I have been the biggest hypocrite ever. While espousing faith and family values, I have secretly over the last several years been viewing pornography on the internet and this became a secret addiction and I became unfaithful to my wife.
Now, in a statement issued earlier today, August 26, Duggar’s parents, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, declared that their son had “brought great insult to the values and faith we hold dear,” while sharing the news that their oldest son had entered a long-term treatment center.
Duggar Family Statement:
We are so thankful for the outpouring of love, care and prayers for our family during this most difficult situation with Josh. As parents we are so deeply grieved by our son’s decisions and actions. His wrong choices have deeply hurt his precious wife and children and have negatively affected so many others. He has also brought great insult to the values and faith we hold dear. Yesterday Josh checked himself into a long-term treatment center. For him it will be a long journey toward wholeness and recovery. We pray that in this he comes to complete repentance and sincere change. In the meantime, we will be offering our love, care and devoted support to Anna and our grandchildren as she also receives counsel and help for her own heart and future. During this time we continue to look to God—He is our rock and comfort. We ask for your continued prayers for our entire family.
The good news is that Duggar is seeking treatment. There can be no doubt that Josh needs counseling and some serious help. Last month TLC cancelled “19 Kids and Counting,” after it was revealed that Josh sexually assaulted four of his underage sisters plus an additional underage female victim.
Adding insult to injury, last week Josh released a statement declaring “I have been the biggest hypocrite ever” and admitting to living a “double life” while confirming his involvement with Ashley Madison, the infamous website for individuals interested in arranging extramarital affairs.
And earlier today, multiple media outlets report that Duggar paid for sex with porn star Danica Dillon while his wife Anna was pregnant with their fourth child.
What is alarming is not so much that Josh paid for consensual sex, what is alarming is that Dillon reports that the sexual encounter was traumatizing, and that Duggar was violent with her and refused to use protection.
Duggar’s behavior indicates a serious and troubling problem with women. No doubt his despicable behavior is linked at least in part to his traumatizing upbringing in an environment of Christian extremism.
Indeed, Duggar is a victims of Christian patriarchy, a victim of Christian homeschooling, a victim of Christian parents who raised him to be an ideological prop in their perverted and deluded fantasy of Christian dominion.
Duggar is a victim of the radical Christian lifestyle known as the Quiverfull movement, a movement where children are raised to be cannon fodder in the Lord’s army: culture warriors bred to promote an ugly, intolerant, sexist, and homophobic brand of Christian extremism.
Given the extreme pressures of his parents’ perverse Christian faith, coupled with the pressures of being a child reality star, it is easy to understand why Duggar might be experiencing problems as an adult.
While the good news is that Duggar is seeking treatment, the bad news is that reports indicate Duggar has entered a “faith based” treatment program, which means Josh will not get the help he needs. Instead, in a Christian treatment center approved of by his extremist parents, Josh will probably end up blaming Satan for his misbehavior, rather than taking responsibility for his own actions.
Hiding behind religious superstition is not going to help Josh Duggar. For Josh, checking into some fundamentalist “faith based” treatment center is like an alcoholic going to a bar to stop drinking. It’s not going to work.
