Our English term, 'resentment', says simply that when we envy we might be motivated to take revenge. When we turn to the French, 'ressentiment', it gets more complicated. We re-feel a past injustice in such a way that it incites mob spirit. With this term,' we add nuances, connotations, political ideology, scapegoating, and perhaps violence. But, we ask: might there exist a dimension of ressentiment within compassion, where we re-feel what victims of injustice felt? Read more
