A Post by Rev. Brandan Robertson and Rev. Rich McCullen As we begin this new decade, the United Methodist Church has officially implemented what has been called “the traditional plan”, which seeks to exclude LGBTQ+ clergy from the life of the denomination. As we watch the faithful resistance of some many queer clergy and allies in these moments, we feel like now is the time for us to speak up about our own denominations position on LGBT+ inclusion. For those... Read more

New Year’s resolutions are always tricky for me. Historically, my resolutions have been pages of goals I have set for myself as I enter the new year- some realistic, some highly unlikely- and I honestly usually don’t look at them after January. This year is no different- I have dozens of goals I would like to accomplish, rhythms of work and life I hope to embrace in order to set myself up for success and wholeness in this next decade. Starting the... Read more

On Thursday, December 19, 2019, something historic happened. The flagship magazine of American Evangelicals, founded by the famed evangelist Billy Graham, called for President Donald Trump to be removed from office following the House of Representatives vote to impeach him the day prior. Within hours of the article posting, the Christianity Today website literally crashed because of the millions of people seeking to view the chief editor, Mark Galli’s words. The article trended on Twitter throughout the day, and by... Read more

Donald J. Trump has become the third President in the history of our nation to be impeached by the House of Representatives for “high crimes and misdemeanors” against the people of the United States. This moment comes as a surprise to absolutely no one. Democrats have been keeping a tally of the immoral and illegal dealings of this President since his first day in office, vowing to defend the constitution the very moment the President had crossed the line from... Read more

On Wednesday, September 18th, President Trump said that Mayor Kevin Faulconer was “doing the right thing” and that’d he’d done “a good job” dealing with the epidemic of homelessness that has emerged in San Diego. While it is true that San Diego has implemented a number of innovative and unique strategies to attempt to reduce the amount of homelessness in our City, the truth is that the number of individuals experiencing homelessness still at an all-time high and continues to... Read more

I grew up in a brand of Christianity that centered around the belief that Jesus was coming back in the near future and that the Church would be taken off the earth and spared from the judgement of God that will be poured out on the world once Christ returned. The thinking was that Jesus first came as the Lamb of God, slain for the world, but when he returned, he would the Lion of Judah, the conquering king who... Read more

Every year on the Fourth of July, I feel incredibly torn. On one hand, it’s true that I have some degree of pride because I live in a nation that for most of it’s history has been a beacon of free speech, religious freedom, and democratic values. On the other hand, I have come to recognize that many of the catchphrases that have been embedded in the minds of every American- phrases like “liberty and justice for all”, “land of... Read more

A majority of the worlds Christian Churches today have official doctrines and dogmas that support the marginalization of LGBT+ people. World governments and individual parents base their discrimination and rejection of the dignity and equality of LGBT+ people based on the authority given to these religious positions. In many ways, religion is one of the chief cultivators of homophobia and transphobia in the world today. But there is also another side to the story. While those with privilege and power... Read more

This is a guest post from Rev. Wendy Holland.  Last week Alabama’s governor signed the most restrictive anti-abortion law in the nation, banning the procedure at all stages of pregnancy, and providing no exception for rape or incest. According to the New York Times, doctors who terminate pregnancies will be at risk of felony charges and prison terms of up to 99 years. A number of other states have recently enacted legislation that makes abortion illegal as soon as a... Read more

Franklin Graham, son of the famed evangelist Billy Graham, has taken to Twitter to question the validity of Presidential Candidate Pete Buttigieg’s faith because he’s an openly gay Christian man. Graham tweeted: “Mayor Buttigieg says he’s a gay Christian. As a Christian I believe the Bible which defines homosexuality as sin, something to be repentant of, not something to be flaunted, praised or politicized.” This view, that being LGBT+ and a Christian is incompatible has been the traditional Christian perspective... Read more
