It’s been some time now since I received the Daniel J. Kane Award from the University of Dayton – March 6, 2014, to be exact. I’ve had photos ready to post but I just discovered last week that the video of the presentation and my acceptance “speech” was posted on YouTube. You can see it below along with some photos of the very lovely event. I continue to feel humbled and grateful for this recognition.      ... Read more

One of my nun-pals sent me this YouTube video about how teens are reacting to the book “The Fault in Our Stars” – and preview of the upcoming film based on the book – by John Green, the author and vlogger (video blogger), and video educator. I had not heard of it before but I have heard of John Green as a producer of YouTube educational videos. This YouTube video is, of course, a promotion for the film and... Read more

Of all the comic-book-turned-into-movie superheroes, Spider-Man has always been my favorite. Despite the launch of this new franchise in 2012 with director Marc Webb at the helm, my favorite film about the araneae homo is Sam Raimi’s 2004 “Spider-Man 2.” It’s one of the best interpretations of creator Stan Lee’s teenage hero as a young man of character and virtue. Ten years later, we have “The Amazing Spider-Man 2: The Rise of Electro,” and the title says almost everything... Read more

Christian blogs, and Catholic Christian blogs in particular, cover a lot of topics. They are also quite popular. Since 2006 Church Relevance has been dedicated to “Creating relevant, effective ministries.” I had never heard of it’s founder Ken Shaffer before today. But I like how he (and collaborator Craig Van Lorlaar) define their mission: “True relevance is understanding culture andresponding to hurts and needs with the gospel, sacrifical love, and selfless ministering.” Now, having set the stage, someone from Catholic Patheosi (a group of... Read more

On Friday Mike Fleming, Jr., posted this news about the remake of “Ben-Hur” over at Deadline. My big question is will this new film include the entire story, including the role that Balthazar’s daughter Iras has in the entire tale. I don’t know how you can remake a film like “Ben-Hur” and that spectacular chariot race (do you know how long it really lasts? See below.) Who could ever play Judah Ben-Hur? Chris Helmsworth? Channing Tatum? If only Brad... Read more

John Paul II in America is available on Amazon – used copies!  I had to decide to reach out and shake his hand or take the photo – which is why I was there. So I did! I just ordered a copy of the book from amazon for $.03 – postage about $5.00. Another memory …     Click here to visit a page with a collage of many photos of our sisters (Daughters of St. Paul US/ES... Read more

Here is my on camera review of “Heaven is for Real” for “The Industry with Sister Rose” on the INNetwork plus my interviews with Randall Wallace, the Burpo family, Greg Kinnear and Thomas Haden Church. This is a movie about hope, faith, and love. My longer print review is here: Heaven is for Real is a compelling story not a sermon in a can Read more

In Budapest, Hungary, head of state Regent Miklós Horthy (Ben Kingsley) was trapped between the Russians on the east and the Nazis from Germany on the west. He was forced to join the Axis in 1941. The first massacre of Hungarian Jews occurred in August that year. After a defeat on the Russian front in 1943, Hitler demanded that the regent punish the 800,000 still living in Hungary and insisted that 10,000 Jews be for supplied for slave labor. This... Read more

If you ask director and filmmaker Richard Ray Perez if the story of Cesar Chavez chose him or if he chose to tell Chavez’s story, he would say both. Following the screening of his new film, “Cesar’s Last Fast,” at the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress Film Showcase March 14, he told the audience that when he was 5 years old in the late 1960s, he first became aware of the table grape boycott while eating lunch at Head Start.... Read more
