Surfing around for an image to enlist for the previous post on the story of Peter’s vision from Acts 10-11, I came across some rather odd bits of artwork. Like this one, for example, from a Sunday school curriculum illustrating the story. Acts 10 says Peter fell into a trance and: “saw the heaven opened and something like a large sheet coming down, being lowered to the ground by its four corners. In it were all kinds of four-footed creatures... Read more

Stephen Prothero’s CNN op-ed from earlier this month titled “On gay marriage, Obama, Billy Graham and a tale of 2 Christianities” touches on some of the points in the previous post here. Prothero notes that the Rev. Billy Graham (or, at least, his children on his behalf) spoke out against marriage equality in North Carolina, citing the Bible as the basis of his opposition. President Barack Obama, a day later, cited the Bible in explaining his support for marriage equality.... Read more

I’ve written many times here about Peter’s vision of the treyf smorgasbord in the book of Acts (most recently here, and earlier here). I love that story, which is why I’ve linked to those chapters from Acts, reprinted them here, and summarized them many times. It’s a terrific story from the Christian Bible and I want everyone to read the whole thing. For some reason, that leads my conservative friends to accuse me of desperately wanting to hide this story... Read more

The U.S. Catholic bishops have decided to make Thomas More the central figure in their summer protests against the government guarantee of equal health insurance coverage for women. Scott Paeth notes that this choice probably reveals more about the bishops’ agenda than they intended: Thomas More died for the sake of his conscience. More also caused others to die for the sake of their consciences. He burned heretics at the stake and he pursued William Tyndale mercilessly (a fact that... Read more

Vorjack: “Ur Doing It Wrong“ Religions are variegated things that allow the individual more control than most folks acknowledge. We’re fond of treating religion as something you’re born into and stuck with barring deconversion. We don’t often talk about the streams of tradition within the religion that an individual must accept or reject. Look around you: in our culture the chances are you’re going to see someone who is a Christian but holds to different interpretations of what Christianity means.... Read more

Nicolae: The Rise of Antichrist: pp. 1-4 As Book 3 of this series begins, we pick up where we left off at the end of the second book. The action begins here just moments after that book stopped, with our heroes stuck in traffic in a rental car near Chicago, struggling to come to grips with the outbreak of war and the death of Bruce Barnes. “Action” is not a word that’s often called for in discussing these books. Tribulation... Read more
