In learning more about St Kateri Tekakwitha I was struck by the connecting points between her and St Therese of Lisieux. Both were orphaned. Both suffered from a terrible disease. Both died at the age of just 24. Therese was called “the Little Flower”. Kateri was called “the Lily of the Mohawks” Pictured are two antique stained glass windows of the two we hope to purchase for the new Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Greenville, SC.   Wherefore, in order that all doubt may be removed regarding a matter of great importance, a matter which pertains to the Church’s divine constitution itself, in virtue of my ministry of confirming the brethren (cf. Lk 22:32) I declare that the Church has no authority whatsoever to confer priestly ordination on women and that this judgment is to be definitively held by all the Church’s faithful. The Daily Telegraph carries coverage here of the historic vote in the Church of England’s General Synod to allow women bishops. The vote also means that the next Archbishop of Canterbury or York could be a woman. Campaigners celebrated the breakthrough, just 20 months after the previous attempt to admit women to the episcopate failed despite overwhelming support in congregations, casting the church into its biggest crisis of authority in recent memory. The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev Justin... Read more

The Celestine Prophecy is a New Age spirituality title that has nothing to do with Pope Celestine V. Instead of the New Age novel I’m interested in Pope Celestine. Why is Pope Celestine V–who only reigned for six months–so important to modern popes? My article at Aleteia explains why Celestine V is important and why his papacy is a kind of prophecy about the modern papacy. The article contrasts the saintly  hermit Celestine with his successor the vile Boniface VIII.... Read more

This light hearted little rant about adolescent type behavior warranted a rash of comments from irate pagan/witchcraft types. Seems their green skin is pretty thin. (that was a joke) We all have to laugh at ourselves a bit, and I was surprised that the pagans–who I usually perceive as laid back and easy going–were so annoyed. In fact the post wasn’t an attack on pagan-witch religion at all, but on a certain type of behavior not unique to pagans.... Read more

Nancy Pelosi, who was awarded the Margaret Sanger Eugenicist of the Year Award by Planned Genocide  Parenthood (go here)has now proclaimed herself the protector of children. This article trumpets her new child protector status… House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) yesterday described herself as a “lioness” when it comes to protecting children. She also called not only for the U.S. government to process minors arriving illegally from Central America on a “case-by-case basis” but for the government to “treat the... Read more

Terry Notary is the man behind the mask in the new film Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.  He is a Hollywood “movement coach” and this fascinating article from London’s Daily Telegraph goes into detail of his work. Notary work in a “mocap” suit– mocap being short for “motion capture”. This is the technology that created Gollum in Lord of the Rings and which is used increasingly in fantasy and science fiction films to create realistic mythical beasts or humanoid... Read more

My book Listen My Son- St Benedict for Fathers is a book of daily readings for dads. Well, it’s good for moms too, and it’s especially useful as one of those books that Moms buy for Dads. In Benedictine monasteries and convents they read a chunk of the Rule of St Benedict every day. I took those daily readings and then wrote an application to family life for each day. We call the family the domestic church. It might just... Read more

Daniel Stewart writes here very well about St Benedict–who’s feast day we celebrate today. Today, monasticism is usually seen as an archaic practice of insulation and irrelevance and is portrayed as quaint or even silly. Inside our fast-paced culture of connectivity and entertainment, it can be difficult to imagine the cloistered life as vibrant and significant. This is why it might sound odd to us to hear Pope Benedictdescribe the Patron of his Pontificate, St. Benedict of Nursia, as a “luminous... Read more
