After witnessing the Democratic and Republican conventions, and watching the polls for Romney and Obama it seems increasingly clear to me that our country is fundamentally divided. The polls have the two candidates running neck and neck. It seems that exactly half the citizens are in favor of one and the other half of the population favors the other. It would be easy to categorize this divide with any manner of explanations: Financial Division “We are talking about the haves... Read more

I’m sorry not to have been blogging much from the damp lands, but with a combination of spotty internet connections, time spent visiting with family and friends, and time just relaxing, I have not been able to blog as much as I would like. One of the maddening things about England is the traffic, the delays and the congestion of living on a small island with too many people on it–all of whom wish to go somewhere. One of the... Read more

Yesterday I came back from the Belmont Abbey Apologetics Camp where I spoke on More Christianity to about 75 high school and college kids. Pat Madrid was there and our friends, David and Anne Trufant–owners of the wonderful camps Kahdalea and Chosatonga. There are ideas cooking to expand the camp next summer and offer apologetics and a mountain vacation in North Carolina for adults as well as students. I had time to finish the classic book by Fr Walter Ciscek–He... Read more

These few weeks at Mass we’re going through the famous sixth chapter of John’s gospel–the Bread of Life passage. An increasing number of Catholics have been taught that the Eucharist is only symbolic. Many people refer to the term ‘the Real Presence’ to refer to the presence of Christ in the Eucharist. The problem is, this term is used by many non-Catholic Christians too. So what is the history of the term ‘Real Presence’ and what do non Catholics mean... Read more

I don’t know when I’ve been happier to see someone walk up the street to my home! I feel like I’ve been weeding this flowerbed for hours, and in this heat, why I’m just about to melt! I was going to keep going, but now you’re here I can get myself a nice cold glass of lemonade and we can sit on the porch for a spell. Would you mind taking these gloves and my hat? There. That’s a help.... Read more

Is Liberalism dead? Ross Douthat comments here on the Leadership Conference of Women Religious and the decline of liberal Christianity. It’s a speculative piece which highlights the chasm that now exists within all forms of liberal Christianity and historic Christianity. I’ve written on the subject a few months ago here. This divide yawns not only within the Catholic Church, but within most of the Protestant denominations as well. It’s a divide between those who view Christianity as a human, historical... Read more

Call me paranoid, but I sometimes feel like it is not only Protestants who are in protest against Catholicism, but the whole world. When I stop to analyze this feeling I realize that there is an argument to be made. If Catholicism embraces the whole truth wherever it appears, then it is going to offend everybody who can’t stand that particular truth. Consequently, if Catholicism embraces the whole truth everywhere, then it is bound to offend almost everybody everywhere who... Read more

A few days ago one of the visitors to the combox said something like, “Why should I believe in the Yahweh of the Old Testament? He’s no different from Ganesh the Hindu elephant god or Baal or Molech or any of the other mythical divine beings.” I had stated that one of the disappointing things about so many of the atheists who come trolling through the blog is that they are often very ignorant of the very subject they are... Read more
