Don’t give it to me. Just give it. My blog post for the National Catholic Register this week explains why. Read that Gospel again. That’s exactly what the rich young man said to Jesus. He told Jesus how good he was. The underlying principle is very simple—“you cannot serve God and money”—and a sad majority of American church-going Catholics still serve money, not God. As I said at our local Catholic high school recently, holding up in one hand a one-dollar... Read more

My article at CRUX this week reflects on nearly five years since the new translation of the Mass into English started to be used. Some people find it awkward and distracting.  Out of the priests and lay leaders in the 6,000 parishes surveyed, 51 percent said they either liked the new translation or didn’t notice much difference, while 49 percent said they disliked it. The majority of respondents who disliked it were priests. So, why do so many of the... Read more

The Holy Father is the Vicar of Christ, and every faithful pope in his own way, through his own personality and charism will reveal an aspect of Christ to the world. In saying this, I should add that this is also the calling of every priest who is called to be perfectly conformed to the image of Christ and lest we let the laypeople off the hook, it is also the calling of each of the baptized to become “little... Read more

It’s true. The little parish of which I am pastor is not only the smallest Catholic parish in Greenville, it is also the poorest. We’re located by a run down interchange on I-85. The demographics indicate the most socio economically disadvantaged population in our prosperous city. In addition to the residential low income and high housing density we also have a  problem with transient poverty. It is not only tractor trailers, businessmen and families on vacation who travel up and... Read more

I can announce here on my blog that the full truth about the third secret of Fatima has finally been revealed. For those who are unfamiliar with the secrets of Fatima, in 1917 the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three peasant children in Portugal. The first “secret” she revealed to them was a horrifying vision of hell. This was revealed on July  13, 1917. Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth.... Read more

If you’re searching for the meaning of life, I’ve been thinking lately that there are really only three options. The first option is nihilism. That is, that there is no meaning of life and the search for meaning if a fool’s errand, a wild goose chase, a pointless quest. If that is your point of view, then I guess you might as well stop reading this post right now and go make a sandwich. However, if you believe there is some... Read more

Check out my new YouTube channel here Stories of the Unexpected are short, true life stories of the supernatural which will act as teasers leading to a more in depth discussion here on my blog. Readers will wonder about a couple of things with this new direction in my blog. First, “Why am I wearing a black turtleneck?” Wearing a clerical shirt sometimes reaches people and sometimes put people off.  The black turtleneck is distinctive, but it is not immediately a... Read more

My article at Aleteia this week reminds that the Mass is first and foremost a re-presentation of Christ’s once for all sacrifice. When we shift our understanding of the Mass from sacrifice to fellowship meal we lose the most profound and mysterious aspect of our Catholic worship. Only when we remember the true meaning of sacrifice will we remember the true meaning of the Mass, and only as we remember the true meaning of the Mass will we be able... Read more
