Someone once asked my why I went to live in England for twenty five years and I answered. “It was C.S.Lewis’ fault. I discovered C.S.Lewis while at college and from his writings and the life of T.S.Eliot I became an avowed Anglophile. When I had the chance to study at Oxford for three years it was like a dream come true. Lewis has changed the lives of millions and it is fascinating to live in these fifty years following his... Read more

Today’s Mass readings include the story from the Acts of the Apostles chapter 10 in which St Peter has a vision of a sheet full of unclean animals lowered from heaven. He is told to “Take and eat.” At first he refuses because to do so would be to break the Jewish law. However, the Spirit persists and he comes to realize that the meaning of the dream is that the gospel is to be taken to the “unclean” Gentiles.... Read more

My article this week at Imaginative Conservative explains how fantasy films stifle the imagination and therefore kill the golden gooses of fantasy. With their special effects and computer generated wizardry, the film maker magicians can now do anything. It is possible to whizz through the wardrobe with Lucy, fall down the rabbit hole with Alice, launch into space with Luke Skywalker, and hop into Hobbiton with Frodo and his friends. No alternative world is out-of-bounds. No fantasy realm is out... Read more

Feminism kills women. Here’s how: The logic isn’t too difficult: 1. Feminists support unrestricted abortion 2. Feminists push the abortion agenda especially in the developing world 3. When abortion is permitted in major parts of the developing world they choose gender selective abortion 4. Gender selection abortion always eliminates females NOT males. 5. Check out the statistics for gender selective abortion in India and China. Go here. 6. Check out the increase of gender selective abortion in the developing world. Go... Read more

Geesh! the Bill and Hillary Corruption show opens with another show stopper. New York Times reports here Mark Shea summarizes: In September 2005, Bill Clinton traveled to Kazakhstan and met his friend Frank Giustra (pronounced joo-strah), who wanted to buy uranium mines there. Clinton gave a press conference with Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev, in which he endorsed the leader’s human rights record and democratic progress, even though he had just received 91% of the vote in an allegedly rigged election. The... Read more

My article for Aleteia this week focusses on the humble actions of Pope Francis and their power to make a statement about the Catholic faith. While Francis’ gestures of humility are important, we should stop and ask ourselves what they are really worth. Critics say they are empty gestures. Washing the feet of prisoners, embracing people with disfiguring diseases and reaching out to the mentally ill, the disabled and the poor make for good press and are wonderful photo opportunities,... Read more

I am featuring links to some of my archived articles through the blog and will be spending some time improving those links over the next few weeks. I hope the blog will soon be a resource with many more articles from various sources that I have written over the years. Here’s a long apologetics article first published in Catholic Answers Magazine which is very important since so many of those who attack the Catholic faith–both Protestants and atheists–blame Catholicism for being pagan.... Read more

No time to blog today, but I have had time to skim this excellent article at the Catholic Herald. The 19-year-old King Henry VIII took to the field arrayed in cloth of gold and blue velvet, all spangled with golden hearts and K’s for his 25-year-old wife, Katherine of Aragon, whose honour he defended as “Sir Loyal Heart”. The joust was the most lavish of Henry’s reign, celebrating the birth, 10 days earlier on New Year’s Day, of their son,... Read more

I’m struck by how few Catholics take advantage of the sacrament of confession, and I wonder why. I think one of the reasons is that many cradle Catholics were hauled off to confession every week as children and they weren’t really taught about the healing power of the sacrament. Their understanding of the sacrament was legalistic and routine. “You couldn’t go to Mass unless you’d been to confession so you had to go to confession to go receive communion so off... Read more
