Revisiting the 2020 Freedom Sigil

Revisiting the 2020 Freedom Sigil January 31, 2025

In the last several weeks, one particular sigil has been on my mind: the 2020 Freedom Sigil. I view this sigil as particularly potent, which is perhaps why I’ve been mulling it over instead of putting it out there again right away.

When we look back at 2020 (the irony of hindsight being 20/20 is not lost to me here), there were a lot of key things that brought both chaos and change. (The 2020 Freedom Sigil also shows up in present in the Quintisigil as the Southern Sigil, which was also released in 2020.) So whether you can consider that relation direct or indirect to using the sigil, I feel it wise to contemplate how to best revisit it. I think I’ve found a suggestion that will be effective.

Be Cool & Collected Witches

This sigil helps to remind us that freedom is never given – it is fought for and won. But to fight effectively, we must work with focus and planning. As I mentioned in my previous post Welcome to the Resistance, coming from a place of pure anger can work against us – especially against a system that counts on us being angry.

That means this sigil is not for using when you’re angry, worked up, and want to wreak havoc in all directions. The Freedom Sigil requires focus, a cool-head with laser-precision. To harken back to its placement in the Quintisigil, this sigil is for pulling up metaphorical weeds and attacking the roots of those working to destroy democracy. Don’t aim up to the top with this sigil – that’s just a lightning rod that will not have the lasting effect you want. Instead draw lightning to the ground, to the exposed roots. Think about a machete or axe that cuts through choking vines and clears a path forward. Aim for the ankles.

And don’t forget to use protection as well. Shields ready and snakes up folks.

Who Can Use This Sigil?

The sigil can be used by anyone in any country for freedom from the aging structures that bind and bend us – as individuals as well as a society and greater global community. Freedom from corruption, inequality, bigotry, racism, and all the fears that impose upon basic human rights and dignity – as well as the health of the planet. Freedom to help bring effective, lasting change that moves all of humanity forward without leaving anyone behind.

What’s In This Sigil?
The following has been built into this sigil:
– Revelation, perception, and reception of Truth (destroy illusions/attempts to deceive)
– Justice and actions that serve it, scales
– Accountability
– Protection for those who need it, and exposure for those who hide behind injustice
– Progress being made towards a better future for all (people& planet)
– Lightning
– Triumph of Integrity
– Clear the Tower and its debris in order to build for tomorrow
– Forward momentum
– Tyr
– Trebuchet
– Spine
– Healing & Hope
– Strength & Power to the people
– Motivation at the Root Level to bring change throughout

NOTE: The color of the sigil does not have to be copied.  The digital version is technically a blue-violet (screens may of course vary), which some magical traditions see as a color of power, manifestation, and protection.  The internal and eternal flame. But any color may be used to suit your needs.

How To Use This Sigil
You are welcome to use this sigil however you see fit that is in alignment with the intent of the sigil and with a keen focus on what I described above.  As long as it’s not used for profit/commercially, you can wear it, share it, draw it in appropriate places, make signs of it, put it on candles, use it for blessings and other forms of protection, and so forth.  You  can use it to lend support to others who are working for justice, or as an antidote for those working against justice.

This sigil -as are all of the shared magic sigils you’ll find on this blog – are meant to be used in conjunction with what is within your ability to accomplish locally at a mundane level. The sigil enhances and empowers those actions, and lends aid to others working in a similar fashion.

UPDATE: Folks have asked me to make this into a t-shirt, so shirts, stickers, magnets, etc are now available on my threadless shop, with proceeds benefiting the ACLU.
