Let us be clear: if John Piper is a dangerous and bad man for holding his view, countless other leaders and teachers are bad and dangerous as well. Read more

We’re in the midst of a Jonathan Edwards renaissance right now. The landmark Edwards Encyclopedia just launched, Nathan Finn and Jeremy Kimble have a great book out soon, and other projects abound. Doing my humble best to add to the theistic fray, I’ve got two projects coming out next year: a Jonathan Edwards devotional and The Essential Jonathan Edwards (mapping the essential contours of his life and ministry). But you need not wait until then to visit the vast, thriving world... Read more

Next week is the 69th annual meeting of the Evangelical Theological Society. I have the privilege of presenting a paper on theopneustos (“God-breathed” from 2 Timothy 3:16) in a session on Sola Scriptura. The theme of ETS this year is the Reformation, and my fellow Midwestern Seminary colleague Matthew Barrett and I have the delight of considering what scholars call the “formal principle” of the Reformation, its doctrine of Holy Writ. (See the session information below.) The ontology of Scripture, I will... Read more

Pastors can't dodge hard questions. Pastors are appointed by God to answer hard questions. They are the figures in the cosmos who must speak the truth. Read more

Another week, another shockingly low price on a book I’ve written. My 2015 monograph Awakening the Evangelical Mind (Zondervan Academic) is on sale right now for $3. Awakening tells the story of how the “neo-evangelicals” reloaded the evangelical mind, starting new schools, thought-journals, and academic associations. The chapter that I most enjoyed writing was Chapter Six on “Crusade University.” Crusade was essentially, in Carl F. H. Henry’s mind, the “Christian Harvard” that evangelicals have never successfully built (Baylor and Wheaton came the closest, most... Read more

It’s not every day you can pick up a book for a buck. Here’s your opportunity: my publisher just let me know that my 2015 book “The Colson Way” is on sale for a very limited time for 99 cents. Go here to snag this deal. (The book is so inexpensive, I feel like I’m doing something wrong in telling you about it.) It was a joy to write this book, which is equal parts an accessible biography of Chuck Colson... Read more

I came of theological age in the “young, restless, Reformed” heyday. The symbol, the emblem that graced the cover of the cover story of Christianity Today on this surging phenomenon, was a t-shirt that read “Jonathan Edwards is my homeboy.” I connected instantly with this movement when I read Collin Hansen’s explosive article. I won’t say that Edwards is my homeboy, but I will say that he is my favorite theologian and historical Christian figure. Today is Edwards’s birthday: October 5, 1703. Without... Read more

Rob Bell was recently asked what counsel he had for a young man whose unborn baby’s life is in danger. According to CNN (HT to Jim Smith), Bell said the following to the man in this heartrending position: Bell walked closer to the man and told him he could give him no easy answers. But he could tell him to avoid people who will try to comfort him by quoting scriptures like Romans 8:28 (“And we know that all things work together... Read more
