There’s a show now created by Tina Fey (whose work I do like) called The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. And it’s doing quite well, which really surprises me. I watched the first few episodes and found it so absurdly unrealistic that I couldn’t continue. The premise is that Kimmy Schmidt was one of three young women in a doomsday cult kept underground in a bunker but that her spirit and hope was never broken and once she is liberated she uses that Pollyanna... Read more

Someone on Facebook in a Hindu group posts a chart of Hinduism and for modern philosophies it includes only Advaita. A man comments that he’s a born Hindu and doesn’t see himself represented. I note that the chart seems to be missing quite a few sects, branches, and philosophies. His response? Hindu is group of sects and sect are not rigid like abrahamic religions So I’m agreeing with him that he doesn’t seem to be represented but his response is... Read more

There’s a popular phrase in America “Karma’s a bitch.” It’s used when the speaker hears of something bad happening to someone they think deserved it. Sometimes I think Americans have an okay grasp of the concept of karma. But then I hear that phrase and I want to force them all to sit down and read Karma Misunderstood! It’s like they think karma is the name of some vengeful Goddess of justice. Karma is not a person. It’s a law... Read more

Whenever I read up on celebrating Hindu holidays they almost always include the instruction that women buy new clothes to wear for the festivities. Are people really doing that? Do you buy new clothes for the holidays? I feel a little bad that I won’t be wearing something new for Diwali. But I almost never buy new clothes. Less than once a year really. And I already have more than enough saris. Do people regularly donate or get rid of... Read more

So first off we went to the midwife yesterday and everything went great. We heard the fetus’s heartbeat! It was pretty amazing. Helped to make it all feel real and the pain I’m going through worth it. The midwife was concerned about my mental state, though, and she is sending me to a therapist so I can hopefully get out of this funk and enjoy my pregnancy! One of the biggest Hindu holidays of the year is coming up next... Read more

I came to my computer to write a post and found that my cat is sleeping peacefully on my desk chair. He’s too cute to move so I’m typing the best I can around him. This past Friday was Karwa Chauth. Last year I missed it completely. Didn’t know it was happening until it was over. This year I knew it was coming but there was no way I could fast. And because of that I didn’t really observe it much... Read more

We have been thinking a lot about baby names recently. Hindu tradition is that you wait to name a baby until after it is born. The astrological chart is used to determine the best syllable to start the name with. We have decided, however, to follow American tradition of having names picked out and ready. I want my children to have a Hindu name. They don’t necessarily have to go by it but I’d like them to have the option.... Read more

I have a very good friend who is Gujarati and she invited me to join her and her fiance at a Gujarati Samaj event in our area. I didn’t know about this organization. I’ll have to learn more about them and maybe go to more events. This was a huge event, a garba dance for Navratri. We all got dressed up and went out for Indian food (to fit the theme). Then we showed up at the dance where there... Read more

I told you a while back that I would explain what I was doing at a Catholic church recently. After reading Post Traumatic Church Syndrome and having energy work done on me, I felt really inspired and moved to heal myself from the bitterness and anger I carry towards Christianity. Having that in my psyche is not helping me. It’s not productive. It’s really only hurting me. I’ve known for years that it’s something I need to let go of... Read more

First of all I wanted to give a quick update about the health insurance. A friend of a friend got us in touch with an insurance broker and so she’ll be able to get us insurance starting in the new year (Jan 2016) and we’ll never have to deal with MD Health Connection again with any luck. The broker said she’s heard many, many horror stories and a lawyer friend said he wouldn’t be surprised if there was a class... Read more
