Today is the feast day of St. Paul Miki and his companions. They were martyred in Nagasaki on February 5th in the year 1597. The story of the martyrs has been made into a film and it’s title is 26 Martyrs. It’s an animated short that will serve as a companion piece to the docu-drama that a number of you have helped to fund: All That Remains. I think you’ll agree that it looks like a “must see” film. Frank, stop. No way is the HHS Mandate’s proposal anything remotely comparable to the government providing no cost access to pornography. As January was winding to a close, news came out that attorneys for St. Thomas More Hospital in Cañon City, CO had cited the fact that Colorado Law didn’t recognize the unborn as persons. This caused quite a brouhaha, as many of you will recall. Today, the hospital acknowledged that this tactic was a mistake, and one that will not be repeated in the future. (more…) Read more

Evening folks. Sorry I haven’t posted anything until now, but I’ve been reading the 80 pages of proposed rules regarding the HHS Mandate. I didn’t really want to, because it’s not exactly Joe Six-Packs’ idea of a “good time.” But seeings how I’ve seen all kinds of reactions to the new proposals, some positive, and some negative, I figured I’d do what the USCCB recommended and read the whole thing. The press release from the Department of Health and Human Services is out. Revisions to the Mandate at this time apply to non-profit religious institutions and their affiliates. Briefly, the changes make a provision for employees of these institutions to be offered separate coverage for “preventive services” from health insurance companies utilized by their employers, or via another insurance provider if the organization is self-insured.
