Tomorrow I will become a member of the Unitarian church. This may be shocking to some people who follow my blog, since just over a year ago, I wrote a post here entitled, "The Baby is the Bathwater: Why I haven't joined the Unitarian church". In spite of this, tomorrow, on May 31, 2015, I will, without reservation, become a member of First Unitarian Church of Hobart. Here's why ... Read more

Ego-Paganism is not focused on connection or relationship, but on individual freedom and self-expression. Ego-centered Pagans may be tangentially concerned with ecology or polytheism or occultism, but in practice, they are concerned only with expression of their unique individuality and defending their freedom to do so against all authoritarian threats, real or imagined. Read more

Five thousand people have already signed “A Pagan Community Statement on the Environment” from 67 countries so far!  That just in the 5 weeks since the statement was published  at ecopagan.com on the Spring Equinox.  That’s half-way to to the goal of 10,000 signatures by Summer Solstice (or Winter Solstice if you’re in the Southern Hemisphere — and plenty of the signatories are). This summer, the Pope is expected to publish a statement on the environment.  It is possible that the Pope may mention “paganism” in his environmental... Read more

When Catholics talk about "paganism", it never seems to me that they are really talking about us, but rather some bogeyman of their own imagining. And perhaps my own image of Catholicism is no more accurate than the Catholic image of Paganism -- merely another convenient, but inaccurate "othering". It can be difficult to see this sometimes, immersed as we are in our distinct paths. But when we suddenly find those paths intersecting, as they are at this moment, perhaps we can reconsider whether we -- and all other life on Earth -- would be better served by emphasizing our similarities, rather than our differences. Read more

Even more than "Big Name Pagans" like Starhawk, I am excited to see the nearly 2000 other signatories of "A Pagan Community Statement on the Environment". These are Pagans who share a deep concern for the Earth and feel a religious responsibility to help transform our relationship with the more-than-human world. As cool as it is that Starhawk is number 812, I wondered who the people were who were numbers 811 and 813. So I reached out to them and they graciously granted me short interviews. Read more

I've heard "herding cats" analogies more times than I care to count, but the fact is that we can organize. We don't need to all be of one mind or agreeing on every point in order to speak in harmony. Just as we attune ourselves to nature and the cycles of the Earth, we can “attune” to one another, temporarily setting aside our egos and prioritizing our individual disagreements, when a collective voice is urgently needed, as it is now. And “A Pagan Community Statement on the Environment" is proof of that. Read more
