“I Built This, Mr. President”

“I Built This, Mr. President” July 19, 2012

President Obama recently said, “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

Small business owners all over America took offense at this incorrect view that government (instead of elbow grease, intelligence, and good-old-fashioned risk taking) is the bedrock of our economy.

Since the President doesn’t understand how our economy works, let’s take a moment to explain how small businesses are created…  More importantly, let’s show him the businesses we’ve made and who has made them.  Please send me your photos — either e-mail me (via BristolsBlog @ gmail.com, without the space!) or tweet me at this blog’s brand new Twitter account (@BristolsBlog) using the hashtag #IBuiltThis.

Be creative! The photo can be of you working or of your small business.  Make it fun, by putting yourself in the photo holding up a sign that tells the President “I Built This!”

Don’t forget to tell me your name, location, and business website!!

Let’s give the President a little lesson on how this country works.  And let’s hurry, because he only has a few months left on the job!

And if there are small business owners in your family, tell us what your mom, dad, or grandparents have created.  I’ll go ahead and start.  My dad has one of the best spots to catch salmon in Bristol Bay. This tough, seasonal job put food on the table when I was a kid, and I’m thankful Dad built up his business through hard work and many cold nights.

There’s my photo —  send me yours!

Thank you for all the photos! See the “I Built This: The Video!”

Lets correct that a little bit.
Only republican small business owners were upset because they were told to be upset by that and they fell in line.

The rest of America got the point, which is no one in this country does anything by themselves. No where else in the world do the opportunities that exist for us, exist for everyone around the world. Someone else built that environment for you to be able to build your business, the people, mostly the middle class help you maintain that business. Only a fool thinks he is an island.

    One of my favorite quotes.
“It’s not the employer that pays the wages, they only handle the money. It is the customer who pays the wages.”

    • The customer would never pay anything if it weren’t for the product. People seek me out, because there’s nothing like my product anywhere.

    • The only way the U.S. government created any sort of environment for my success was to the extent that they stayed away from me.

      • Tom

So you’ve never driven on an interstate highway? LOL, another hypocrite.

        • zane

If you have driven on ANY highway, you have paid for that priviledge through gasoline taxes. Or do you think the money to build those roads and bridges just come from the land of unicorns and rainbows?

        • Dee W

How is he a hypocrite? He paid for the road.

          • Dorothy Zink

We all did. That’s the point. We all contribute to each other’s success. That’s a wonderful thing. If it bothers you to admit it that’s a shame for you, but denying it won’t make it better for you. Anyway, this isn’t anything for small business owners to be concerned about. You already plenty of taxes and contribute greatly to our society. It’s the 1% who just want to suck out and then offshore all the good who don’t want to contribute, and they’re misleading you into fighting their battle for them and voting against your own best interests. They are the ones who left out bits and pieces of speeches to make you think something else was being claimed. Vary your new sources and I know you can read between the lines. When you do, you’re going to feel used.

Joseppi – I can see you were educated by the same ignorant teachers that schooled Obama. A business finds something called a “market”. Within that market are what are called “target customers”. S/he then spends their resources: risk captial; inelligence; talent; time and effort. They have to work hard to figure out something called the “dynamics”. They often fail at first because you have to do something called “learning”. YOU, nor the gov’t, nor the customer other than by their behavior tells us how to do this — so please – quit commenting on something you know nothing about. You’re an echo – and not even a good one.

    • Joseppi

      WAKE UP!!
Your names suggests that you are italian, if I am incorrect I stand corrected, I am italian, my grandfather sailed over here in the early 1900’s to seek a better life for his family, the italians like all imigrants came to this beautiful Country seeking the American dream, look around you my friend the american dream has become an american nightnmare in 3.5 short years.

Have you ever took a risk, ever worked a double shift unless you were paid overtime, been so tired and were at the point of giving up, but pressed on, were at the brink of losing it all but never let anyone see you sweat, That is small business, The American Dream.
I have bought and sold a half dozen business’s in my 35 years, I started a new company last year in this mess that Obama calls an economy, I am in debt up to my eyeballs and wake up every morning with my a_s puckering before my eyes open, but I press on, I am happy, I am living the american dream, no one gave it to me, and no ones going to bale me out if I fail.
Wake up, its the dreamers and the risk takers that molded this Country, are you one of those people that looks at another and admires what they have, and hope to one day have what they have or more, or do you look at them and say they should share what they have.

As for your favorite quote, here is one mine that you should learn

“Entrepreneurship is living a few years of your life like most people wont, so you can spend the rest of your life like most people cant”

Here is another one, “if it were easy everyone would be doing it”

    • AnyD

Juseppi, you are so confused you have tricked yourself. Everyone understands that the government builds roads and infrastructure. They do that through private contractors who make some of the hardest money in the construction business, big checks that take many months to come.
The problem with what the president said that you failed to understand is that innovation and drive do not come from governments, that comes from people who are motivated by their own enlightened self interest to excel. The president implied that, yeah you might be smart, but there’s a lot of smart people out there… He is oblivious to the fact that we as individuals are capable of using our gifts and talents to produce what could not have been imagined only a few short years ago. The government didn’t invent the iPhone, if it was up to them we would all still be connected to wires and Princess Phones.
The president is stuck in the Soviet model, it’s all he ever knew, it’s all he was ever taught. Innovation is the realm of the individual. It is only unleashed where the individual is free to access resources to create. The president’s ideas are all about moving the resources off into government control and then when the markets fail he will blame the failure on the market model. Classic Fascism. But you won’t recognize that because you think Bush is a Fascist. Maybe you ought to look the word up.

    • Charley

Joe…our point exactly…who built that enviroment Joe…other business people…NOT THE GOV. and Joe anything the gov. finances is because biz owners (middle class america ) gave the gov. money in the form of taxes to do it, then the gov. hires private businesses that people have built to do the work…you libs have a very twisted logic, its like you live in a world that has been turned inside out. Joe the obama statement was very ignorant and revealing…he cannot walk that one back, his only out is just to admit it was a very stupid statement or cop to being a marxist as we on the right know he is…either way he is in deep do-do, he made a lot of dems mad to Joe, it was a major blunder that combined with voter i.d. laws will cost him the election. The King is dead Joe.

    • Dee W

Lets correct that a little bit.
“Only republican small business owners were upset because they were told to be upset by that and they fell in line.” Really? What do you base this on? Just something you made up to start your comments that we should just accept as being true because you said it? Sorry – we don’t.

“The rest of America got the point”
Joseppi, I don’t know about what you describe as the “rest of America” but the overwhelming majority of Americans disagree. The ‘point’ was completely inaccurate.

“which is no one in this country does anything by themselves.”
Really? If someone comes up with an idea for a business and makes the decision to start it and run it – take the risk and do the hard work – someone else did that for them? You are expanding beyond what was core of what was being discussed.

“No where else in the world do the opportunities that exist for us, exist for everyone around the world. Someone else built that environment for you to be able to build your business, the people, mostly the middle class help you maintain that business. Only a fool thinks he is an island.”

Well, without a markeplace, no…but that is not something created by the government. The roads, bridges, fire, police, schools, etc. all came as a result of previous capital generated by previous entrepeneurs. You are trying to spin the President’s remarks which were clearly about government intervention as the center of what created all of this and that is simply not true.

      “One of my favorite quotes.
“It’s not the employer that pays the wages, they only handle the money. It is the customer who pays the wages.”

Not if the customers don’t need or what the goods and services being provided by that business they don’t. That quote is quite incomplete and absurd.

  • My mom started this small business back in 1986 when our economy sunk. She had to go to work to help support our family. I purchased her business in 1996 and we are still going strong. We work hard and play hard and I truely appreciate my community for supporting us. Yes, I built this with absolutely NO help from the government!!! President Obama recently said, “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

    • Tom

So your customers don’t use public roads to access your business? LOL, yet another hypocrite

      • AnyD

Public roads are one of the very few things in which the government is supposed to be involved.
Would they have built the road if the people had not been there? NO, the government, usually, builds roads and infrastructure where private industry is building. And the government charges for every inspection and controls every aspect of the road building.
The question, you moron, is whether the business would exist if the innovation and idea and sweat equity and tears and a ton of risk had been left for the government to do. Usually the answer is a resounding NO.
Private businesses used to build their own roads. the government has regulated them out of that business. Private business used to build the homes of their workers and the roads and railroads to their homes. We now call those guys Robber Barons. Just sayin, it’s not impossible without Government. On the other hand, the government couldn’t build the road without private industry. GET a FREAKIN CLUE. You are the mind numbed robot.

        • Jonn Con

Do you have a website? The internet is the product of government innovation, creativity and hard work.

      • idesign

Hey Sparky, us tax payers paid for those roads, not the government..:)

      • Keep believing in the fairytale they sold you

      • Charley

Tom who’s money built the public roads and where did those people get the money to give to the gov. to build the private roads and sewer systems and dams. etc.? From the people Tom…you and the president have it assbackwards, the gov. would not exist but for the biz owners and workers paying for it, Tom you do realize they drove on mainly dirt roads when Henry Ford made his first cars or bricks paid for directly by citizens in towns where they did biz. The gov. is nothing without the money and expertise of the business man Tom…..fool…….lol…now run along and beg mommy to buy you another bag of weed so you can do some more heavy thinking.

      • Dee W

who paid for the roads, Tom? The “Government” doesn’t pay for anything because it doesn’t have its own capital. The roads would not exist without business owners. Look back at your history – early business owners were moving their goods to market on dirt paths, no large police forces in the area, fire protection, etc. As these business grew the economy, they increased the capital available over time allowing for the building of roads, bridges, etc. That came first.

  • My AC Motor Controller:

I spent thousands of dollars of my own money working other jobs to develop this controller. We also have lived in my mother-in-law’s basement to save money. I certainly never got anything useful from the government to help.

  • KHD

This is taken completely out of context. Typical republican innuendo. But, that would be expected from this blog.

    • AnyD

KHD, I will grant that a lot of the play these comments has gotten is slightly out of context. I reject the idea that the mindset of the President is being taken out of context.
He said, Paraphrase: “You think you’re smart, There’s a lot of smart people out there…”
This indicates that he has no clue what causes motivation and innovation. He knows NOTHING about private industry and business. He has never had what the average American would call a “real job” and he has never signed both sides of a paycheck. I’ll give you a minute to figure out what that means.
You have the mindset that since public money has built infrastructure that private industry owes something to the public. When you think that, you are thinking they ought to pay more taxes. What I am trying to get through the miasma of your over educated skull is that Private industry, by its very existence, gives something back to society. They provide the things we need to live comfortable lives and jobs to earn money. While they are doing that, they compete with other businesses and thus they engage in innovation and new products.
What ought to be happening is that you and your ilk ought to get down on your hands and knees and kiss the feed of the people who have put their homes and lives up for collateral to build businesses to serve us. I don’t see that happening though. Life at the end of the Government teat is too easy for you to break out of the matrix and live a real life.

      • Jonn Con

And yet somehow he managed to become president of the United States. I’d say he knows a little something about something. That said, non-profits that work for the benefit of communities are businesses, the University of Chicago is a business, even the Harvard Law Review is a business. Probably the law firm he worked for is, too.

Most people I’ve known who start their own businesses do it because they can’t work effectively with or for other people. That probably has a lot to do with why so many businesses fail in the first few years.

        • Charley

Thats easy Jonn…….he cheated his way in, lied his way in, he had a very slick pr firm promoting him…Axelrod, we all know the crap Acorn was pulling, the voter intimadation, the union thugs, the illigals from everywhere voting, when you can vote with a utility bill we are in big trouble and don’t say it didn’t happen…..bullhockey. And Jonn the why of why people start a biz is irrelivant, what matters is that in America ( and this is known around the world ) is you can build a biz and threw hard work became a sucess, remember we are the land of oppertunity Jonn.

    • Dee W

It was not taken out of context. Sorry.

  • My Father-in-love (and law) started his own custom home construction business more than 20 years ago. His job has only been made more difficult whenever the government intervenes. He built his business with motivation, determination and strength. The government stayed out of the way during the building process. It wasn’t until he was a successful business owner that they intervened. Since then his job has been made more difficult.

    • BlueVA

My guess, Claire, is that your father has to have his work approved by a local authority who assesses his structures using standards of safety outlined by some government entity. Your father-in-law may be an expert in his profession, but I’ll bet his customers rest easy if his work is approved.

      • AnyD

BlueVA. Yeah, I seem to recall that the BP oil well that blew up had received a huge commendation and reward from the Government inspectors a few weeks before it blew up.
Yeah, I am more inclined to trust the guy who owns the business and has his own money on the line if it’s not right.
the Government Inspectors are invariably someone’s brother in law who couldn’t find legitimate work in the industry because his work was too shoddy. GET A CLUE!

  • KHD- did you watch the speech? The president blatantly insulted business owners and start up companies by saying that anyone could have done what they did. That there are plenty of smart people, there are plenty of hard working people…Yet it is the business owners who take the risk, the business owners who put their blood sweat and tears into their product or service. The government and most certainly the president have no place to say that they were the cause of that business.

  • janel

That’s right… only a few more months until he will be drawing unemployment!

    • Emma Lora

Have you all noticed.. it is alwasys the same few who want to speak the Obama speak. I can’t help but wonder if they fit in one of three catgegories…
      1. They work in the gov sector.
      2. they are on the dole
      3. they are brainwashed
the comprehension of use of taxpayer dollars seems to allude them. What BHO did w/ taxpayer dollars is squander it on failed business, but doesn’t want to take responsibilites. Those in gov. are hired servants.. hired by We the people. this administraton has failed miserably. He needs to be fired!

      • Gwen

Excuse me, I can only speak for myself in saying why I post here on occasion. 1) This is one of the few right wing blogs that will let you freely post your opinion without heavy moderation.
        2) Some of the Conservatives who post here aren’t insane or mean. A lot of them are but not all.
        3) I took an interest in Bristol’s blog because I’m curious to see how she might grow and change considering who her mother is.

        1) I do not work for the governemnt
        2) I’m not “on the dole.” Why is that the knee jerk assumption of a whole heckova lot of right wing folk when confronted with opinions that differ from their own?
        3) I’m certainly not “brainwashed,” either. I don’t consider President my God, my Master nor any other silly thing you people come up with.

        4) I am a Christian who happens to vote for Democrats sometimes. Why? Because I’m not a one issue voter, that issue being, 9 times out of 10, abortion.

I haven’t posted for quite a while because I’ve had some heavy duty family issues crop up over the Summer.

        • AnyD

You have made some good points. A little put off by being referred to as “Right Wing” Consider this, All of the “Mainstream” media outlets are bleeding viewers and they are being picked up by Fox. Fox isn’t Right Wing, they are middle America. That’s why they have the most viewers. Think about it.

          • MiddleRoader

Sorry, but Fox News is right wing. I’m not, but I still watch it. In fact, i have it on right now. Just because they have a lot of viewers doesn’t mean those viewers agree with them. Some people welcome opposing points of view; some just like the format of the shows, etc.

    • to the tune of $7,000 dollars per week for the rest of his life… WTF

  • Shannon

My Grandfather built our family Grinding company. My Father has worked there ever since he was a little boy. My Father still runs this small business with 25 loyal employees. The company was built by my Grandfather and Father not by the Government! Small businesses are what make America what it is….Government does not…

  • Kimberly

President Obama’s comments showed us how out of touch he really is. And no one told me to think this way about them. The rest of America is smart enough to know that he is attaching small business so he can try to raise taxes on them. We need jobs and a president who will implement policies to encourage small businesses and the job creation they bring about. Barack Obama is not that president, Mitt Romney is.

  • BlueVA

As usual, the President’s words are taken out of context by Republicans. The same Republicans who refuse to believe that their tax money goes anywhere other than “paying for the lifestyle of those who won’t help themselves,” as they often say. If you’re a successful business owner and excelled in a public school — sorry, but the government helped you. If you’re a successful business owner and attended a public university — sorry, the government helped you. If you’re a successful business owner and you’re lucky enough to have located your business on a busy street — sorry, but the government helped you. Paul Ryan, who saved the Social Security checks he received after his father’s death and used the funds to go to college — sorry, the government helped him. The Republicans who voted to keep their free, lifelong, government-provided healthcare while voting to repeal the Affordable Health Care Act — sorry, but…you get the picture. The President is doing nothing more than encouraging a spirit of paying it forward, acknowledging that in even in the smallest way, we all benefited from the actions of government in some way.

    • Frederick Lang

Was it republicans really Blue? Then why is it I’ve heard nothing but business owners who are speaking out on this debacle of Obama’s. You also don’t seem to know that with those republicans are democrats voicing their same negative sentiments. Further more, democrats are also keeping their same health care in spite of the fact the rest of us majority of Americans didn’t want the kind of big government to run our private health care. You’re already trying to rewrite history while it’s being made!!

    • Reny Raven

To Blue, Am I mistaken? I have always been under the impression that our tax dollars are what the government uses to provide all these things for us. In that case I think it would be safe to say that the government didn’t build anything without the help of the people, and that would include help from small business owners! Even government grants given to some come from taxes paid by the American public.

    • Piscean Gal

RIGHT ON, Blue VA!! It was pretty evident that his words would be taken out of context by the right. The message that no one does anything ALL on their own, got lost, meaning, Bristol couldn’t have this blog if it wasn’t for Patheos. Bristol couldn’t have TRIPP without Levi. She couldn’t live her luxurious lifestyle without her parents money, and THEY wouldn’t have their money without the “help” they’ve recieved. I know it goes deeper than this, but we’re “talking” about Bristol here, so I kept it understandable and relateable for her 🙂

      • That is a wonderful illustration! Bristol Palin can say “I built this blog” and on one level be right, but not on the level the president was talking about in the statement that his opponents are quote-mining so selectively.

I think that Bristol Palin should either apologize for the misrepresentation, or tell Patheos she doesn’t need them. As for me, I am grateful to Patheos for hosting my blog, and to president Obama for articulating so well the ways in which we are all in this together.

        • Truth101

If Obama articulalted so well he would not be in this mess right now. The man can’t even read correctly what is on a telepromte.

        • Truth101

If Obama articulalted so well he would not be in this mess right now. The man can’t even read correctly what is on a telepromter.

    • ash williams

all i have to say is, “Obama, you aint built jack%%&*&^%$. What the hell do you know about what it takes to run a business…Pay it forward? that means lets steal my hard earned money…You’re all thieves, just like that useless fool in the white house

    • Jim Heckman

The problem with this argument is that the people who are sitting on their butts collecting welfare, unemployment and all the other government entitlements also attended the same schools, drove on the same roads, crossed the same bridges. They just didn’t have the drive to get up and do what others have. God bless those men and women who have the desire to put themselves, their families and their resources at risk to develop small businesses. Some succeed, some fail…but all tried…and many of those who fail take what they learn and try again.

    • Fred Donehoo

“The government” did not help anybody. The taxpayers did. And Obama is destroying taxpayers by destroying small business–and he still doesn’t realize what he is doing.

      • Truth101

You are being kind to the M a r x i s t in Chief. He knows exactly what he is doing.

    • Marc

Sorry the Govt doesn’t help anyone, ITS OUR TAX DOLLARS THAT DO. Blue you want to bow down and thank the Govt for everything you have that’s your bidness. MY PUBLIC EDUCATION was paid for by my PARENTS property taxes, the govt didn’t generate any wealth to pay for my education.

      • BlueVA

Marc, be reasonable. Do you honestly believe that your parents’ tax money was specially earmarked for you and only you? Then why didn’t you live on a dirt road that was traveled only by your family and take that private dirt road all the way to a school that only you attended to be taught by a teacher who was paid by only your parents? I wish you folks would see past your own noses.

    • UUMMM excuse me but I went to Catholic school and my great grandfather started to first over land trucking industry and built the first truck to carry lime out of the pits to build the first roads in Michigan. the sold THE SEITZ TRANSMISSION plant out and went into over land hauling changing the name to Michigan Motor Freight. Did the govt help no, is the government helping me no, I don’t need or want. Who helps? the neighbors and friends in all the cases above including the Catholic church. I also help them.

    • CommonSense

That money they the govt. used to build those roads, assist that state college, etc….CAME FROM THE PEOPLE TO BEGIN WITH! The govt. has NO MONEY, except that which they take FROM THE PEOPLE.

    • James, the government has done NOTHING but stand in the way of me building my business. The ONLY things I have seen from the government is more and more and more taxes, fines, regulations. They haven’t helped me a bit!! And to say that the roads the government built helped me so I should pay more is ridiculous!! EVERY American enjoys these SAME BENEFITS, but NOT EVERY AMERICAN SEIZES OPPORTUNITY and SACRIFICES THEIR LIFE to start a business. So, if you do not own a business and you are poor(or WHATEVER THE CASE MAY BE)…..the government helped you to be poor, so you should pay more. I work my ass off to pay my employees, and I DON’T EVEN GET A CHECK MYSELF!! Government HELPED me?!? I don’t think so.

    • Ed Garfield

He said you didnt make this happen, the government did or someone else made it happen. Noone is saying they didnt get ‘any’ help. And yes, giving government assistance to those who don’t want to work and making that a lifestyle and raising their kids to do the same thing making them dependent on the government, is wrong. Government assistance should be for those who are doing everything in their power to make ends meet but can’t. They need to put forth a 100% effort and where they fall short the government can step in and help out…..for a limited time. 2yrs maybe? This country would save so much $$ if this was done. Also, why give these people money to spend however they want instead of helping them with the things they need. Powdered milk and a bag of rice maybe? Give them free money they’ll spend it on drugs, alcohol, soda, chips, tv’s, radios, etc. I dont like my tax dollars paying for this. This doesn’t help them, it just makes them expect more.
Also, why raise taxes to pay off someone else’s incurred debt? If you borrow money, you pay off that debt. How can Obama criticize Romney for ‘outsourcing’ jobs out of the country when so much of our stuff is ‘Made in China’? Isn’t this outsourcing to China? Yeah, we have borrowed a huge sum of money from China and we have to pay it back. But we didnt have to borrow any $$ from them. Cut government programs we don’t need. Don’t make welfare a lifestyle.

    • It’s pretty tough to take “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.” out of context.

Once upon a time, ‘The Little Red Hen’ was required reading for youngsters. It teaches that success is due to hard work and freeloaders are not entitled to the fruits of others’ labor. Of course, it is contrary to the socialist agenda and so it no doubt has been removed from primary school curriculum.

Clearly BlueVA, you’ve never built and run a successful business. If you had, you would understand that Government didn’t ‘make it happen’. To the contrary, Government is an obstacle that must be overcome in order to be successful. We are successful DESPITE Government not because of it.

      • BlueVA

Dream on, ATTheRubicon. I’m pretty well off, and I recognize that without Pell Grants, I wouldn’t have been able to finish college, get my degree, become a professional, raise a family comfortably, and afford small luxuries in life.

To “Blue VA”—My dad (who has now passed away) did not even graduate from high school–so no he did not go to college–so therefore–no funds from the government there. He worked hard and saved his money–none came from the government–paid taxes every year–never got any back. Then when he had saved enough–HE built his own business–the govenment DID NOT HELP HIM!!! His business was on a street in a small town. He paid taxes to have that street paved–no govenment funds did this. So–SORRY to you–There are people out there that did build their owe business. The government did not give my dad anything–he worked hard all his life and with the help of God my dad built his business himself! That is the problem today–no one is willing to work hard and do for themselves. Many people have never worked for anything–for that fact DO NOT know how to work–they want the government to GIVE them what they have. *I believe what the Bible says and it does warn us against idleness in 2 Thessalonians 3.

      • BlueVA

Government funds come from taxes, so yes, government funds paved the road. Unless your grandfather paid to have the road finished himself. If he attended public school, then the government kept that school’s doors open. The Bible also counsels us against pride and caring for the less fortunate among us.

  • Frederick Lang

It was inevitable that Obama would let his real economic philosophy out of the bag with regard to his idea of “job creation” in America. He has showed these signs ever since becoming president. He is not for free market capitalism but for American workers dependent on big government and paying the higher taxes to support that even bigger government. With each gaff and slip of the tongue, weather accidently or on purpose, he is showing his true colors as a liberal, anti-business demagogue and Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi are right behind him. What is more sad are those American’s who cannot see through his rhetoric and his utopian statist agendas and will vote for him again. He must be defeated in November and thank you Bristol for being yet another avenue to expose this man for what he really is.

  • I love this post….
My father decided 1 year ago to get back into the Waste Industry as a private Hauler in Miami, FL.
Well in one year our 3rd Family owned and operated private garbage company based in Miami, FL. has gone from a 1 truck and 4 employee operation to over 15 employees and a full fleet of 6 trucks, consisting of Roll-Off, Garbage and Grapple trucks.
My father has owned 2 garbage companies before this one that he in fact built himself as well from the ground up.
So I will say in the words of my father, Mr. President #IBuiltThis and two multi million dollar companies before it…

  • David R. Gustafson

To all of the Liberals telling all of us normal people that we are taking this comment out of context…….duh! We know! We know that practically everything in life involves other people and even help from others on occasion. Our point is the audacity behind his statement. Obama was trying to belittle the hard working man and upsell big government. He is threatened by motivated hard working Americans because we don’t need BIG government. Some government, yes! But not Big government. Two famous musicians who love big government just found out how annoying it is when their microphones were shut off in the middle of a song because they ran over their time limit for noise in the park they were playing in. Is that the kind of world we want to live in? It was Paul Mccartney and Bruce Springsteen. That is rock and roll!!! You don’t pull the plug on rock and roll for a noise curfew unless your government is your babysitter.

  • CJ

SORRY, BLUEVA, but, you’re forgetting something. We pay the salaries of this government do we not? Our tax dollars pay for the services it renders, do they not? We’re already paying it forward, TENFOLD!!
Our government was designed to be OF the people, BY the people and FOR the people!!! IF ANYTHING…….IT NEEDS TO THANK AND REWARD “WE THE PEOPLE!!!

    • HRK

      Well stated!

    • Vicki

Of course, if you have these liberals who don’t get where the tax money comes from, so that the feds can spend OUR money in building roads, then they probably have never paid taxes nor have they looked at their household budget to see exactly where half the money from his paycheck goes. But then again, if you don’t get a paycheck, then you wouldn’t have a clue!

    • BlueVA

Yes, CJ, and that’s what’s being said: our tax dollars pay for services that everyone uses; therefore, we collectively contribute, even in small ways, to our neighbor’s success.

  • conanobrian

Bristol, you’re no politician, and you haven’t kept up with the news. Romney agrees with Obama that government helps small business. Looking at your father’s business: who patrols the waters to make sure that there are no enemy submarines off shore– not Todd. It’s the US government and US Coast Guard. If those fish travel anywhere over roads to get to market, they were not built by Todd. They were built by the US and/or Alaskan governments. Fly those fish anywhere? US air traffic controllers. Unfair competition from China, US tariffs. Unfair competition from China regarding tainted fish? FDA. Your father’s taxes paid from his fishing business pays for these things, but they are not possible without the cooperation of the government working with business. In fact, the reason that Todd enjoys special fishing grounds is because of his native heritage– it was the US government who made the treaties with the native population to safeguard their traditional way of life. Without that protection, the Japanese fishing boats would be cleaning out the Alaskan coastline.

Please stick to what you know best, Bristol, showing young single mothers how not to raise their children. And if you are thinking about getting married to Gino on TV for more publicity, you will harm what’s left of your mother’s credibility in politics. Then, your family will show their true colors– it’s about the celebrity and money, and nothing else.

    • Piscean Gal

      GREAT POST, Conanobrian!!!

      • Conanobrain, wher does all that money for the protection you are talking about come from, not the government, it comes from us tax payers. Who mans those ships keeping other countries at bay, not the government, the tax paying Americans. Government does not make 1 single penny. They get every dime they blow from Us the U.S. taxpayer.

    • blueniner

Idiot Conan Obrien likes taking a shot at Sarah Palin through Bristol, but what he forgets to tell you, all those Government services are paid for through TAXES, ala the PRIVATE SECTOR, the TAXES are the origin for those services, we the people, the taxpayers fund those services. So you, have shown your true colors to be a fool!

      • Vicki

Great post blueniner! It’s socialist liberals who don’t get that federal and state revenue stream come from the people who work and pay a lot of taxes. They don’t get that even major corporations pay a lot in taxes too. I say that most federal services and construction projects (including roads, bridges and railroads) should all be privatized! The only federal program I would pay for is our national security and all things related to military.

    • CommonSense

We the People are the government, and we the people funded those things. The term you use as “government” is simply a body that we have elected to help decide where OUR money goes. Infrastructure and defense are paid for by the people, not the government.

    • Chris Golas

Conan, Bristol doesn’t take orders from snarky has-beens like you, doesn’t have to, and neither do I. Thanks for at least acknowledging that Todd already pays taxes. But the federal government is too big, too inefficient, and too deep in the red already, and Todd, myself, and the rest of us here in ‘flyover country’ don’t want to pay any more taxes than we already do. M’kay? And will you stop with the plastic surgery already? Your scaring small children.

    • stick2basics

Conanobrian!!! Shut the heck up…WHo are you? a politician, that’s the problem here. We don’t need politicians, we need carpenters, business owners running for government seats. Not people that make money by approving stupid laws. Like ObamaCare…Did you know there are 4 taxes that will start in 6 months just do to this? This is going to affect the middle classs only.

      1. The ObamaCare Medical Device Manufacturing Tax
This 2.3 percent tax on medical device makers will raise the price of (for example) every pacemaker, prosthetic limb, stent, and operating table. Can you remind us, Mr. President, how taxing medical devices will reduce the cost of health care? The tax is particularly destructive because it is levied on gross sales and even targets companies who haven’t turned a profit yet.
These are often small, scrappy companies with less than 20 employees who pioneer the next generation of life-prolonging devices. In addition to raising the cost of health care, this $20 billion tax over the next ten years will not help the country’s jobs outlook, as the industry employs nearly 400,000 Americans. Several companies have already responded to the looming tax by cutting research and development budgets and laying off workers.
      2. The ObamaCare High Medical Bills Tax
This onerous tax provision will hit Americans facing the highest out-of-pocket medical bills. Currently, Americans are allowed to deduct medical expenses on their 1040 form to the extent the costs exceed 7.5 percent of one’s adjusted gross income.
The new ObamaCare provision will raise that threshold to 10 percent, subjecting patients to a higher tax bill. This tax will hit pre-retirement seniors the hardest. Over the next ten years, affected Americans will pony up a minimum total of $15 billion in taxes thanks to this provision.
      3. The ObamaCare Flexible Spending Account Cap
The 24 million Americans who have Flexible Spending Accounts will face a new federally imposed $2,500 annual cap. These pre-tax accounts, which currently have no federal limit, are used to purchase everything from contact lenses to children’s braces. With the cost of braces being as high as $7,200, this tax provision will play an unwelcome role in everyday kitchen-table health care decisions.
The cap will also affect families with special-needs children, whose tuition can be covered using FSA funds. Special-needs tuition can cost up to $14,000 per child per year. This cruel tax provision will limit the options available to such families, all so that the federal government can squeeze an additional $13 billion out of taxpayer pockets over the next ten years.
The targeting of FSAs by President Obama and congressional Democrats is no accident. The progressive left has never been fond of the consumer-driven accounts, which serve as a small roadblock in their long-term drive for a one-size-fits-all government health care bureaucracy.
For further proof, note the ObamaCare “medicine cabinet tax” which since 2011 has barred the 13.5 million Americans with Health Savings Accounts from purchasing over-the-counter medicines with pre-tax funds.
      4. The ObamaCare Surtax on Investment Income
Under current law, the capital gains tax rate for all Americans rises from 15 to 20 percent in 2013, while the top dividend rate rises from 15 to 39.6 percent. The new ObamaCare surtax takes the top capital gains rate to 23.8 percent and top dividend rate to 43.4 percent. The tax will take a minimum of $123 billion out of taxpayer pockets over the next ten years.
      And, last but not least…
      5. The ObamaCare Medicare Payroll Tax increase
This tax soaks employers to the tune of $86 billion over the next ten years.
As you can understand, there is a reason why the authors of ObamaCare wrote the law in such a way that the most brutal tax increases take effect conveniently after the 2012 election. It’s the same reason President Obama, congressional Democrats, and the mainstream media conveniently neglect to mention these taxes and prefer that you simply “move on” after the Supreme Court ruling.

      • Gwen

stick2basics, why do you feel the need to distort the truth about the 5 points above? Did you research any of the info you’ve posted, or is it just a cut and paste from some right wing blog who just wants to smear the Affordable Care Act?

        1) Because of the Affordable Care Act, those manufacturers will be making even more devices, thereby selling more devices, thereby paying a teensy increased tax that will be more than counterbalanced by the increased business.

        2) By wiping out hidden loopholes in your insurance coverage, it more than makes up for the slight gap in previous deductions vs the new 10 percent threshold. Not to mention, this is a small price to pay for the increase in the number of people who can afford coverage. I know, I know, to some people on the conservative side of the fence, the thought of paying a fraction of a penny to help someone afford to have insurance on their kids is anti American but, there ya go.

        3) Those FSA’s are both subject to abuse and also wind up losing people money at the same time. At this point, the average account is around $1200 per year and around 14 percent wind up forfeiting money at the end of the year because they don’t use it. The cap of $2500 is a fair amount and keeps a lot of people from losing money at year’s end.

        4) This is one of the biggest distortions thus far. People who work for a living and earn wages and salaries, pay a portion of their wages towards Medicare. Investment income isn’t subject to that tax. Now it will be and should be. It goes to strengthen Medicare. Why should people like Mitt Romeny not be subjected to this tax on the majority of his income, simply because he doesn’t work for a living, like the rest of us? And, for those working stiffs who have a small investment income, cg, etc., this new tax is not triggered until they reach the $250,000 threshold.

        5) Another one that strengthens Medicare and is only applicable to those making over $250,000 per year. And it doesn’t apply to anything under that amount. Not the first $250,000.

I understand that the right wing wants nothing more than to paint the Affordable Care Act to be an awful thing that all American loving Americans should be afraid of but, when you fail to include the positives it brings, you damage your argument and appear shady. That’s according to my son in law who is a Doctor and is happy to see this come about.

  • Misty

    Great idea Bristol!

  • Truth

Bristol, You probably shouldn’t post the names and addresses of the owners of the pics because some of the people that follow Obama are thugs and not very nice. You of all people should know this!

  • Kim Morsett

We DID build our business on our own. We are succeeding thanks to our customers and our clients. But we work our business 24/7. We DO NOT take vacations. We work every holiday. My husband misses a lot of the boys games and programs. We can’t shut off our phones or decide we aren’t working today. Can’t happen or we won’t have a business. There are times we end up doing something for free just to make it work for one of our drivers. We did not ask for loans to start our business. We have not relied on the Gov’t to “help” us. In fact we do more than our share in paying the taxes we do just so we can have the privilege of working 24/7, so my tax $$ can support those on welfare too lazy to go get a job and where big corporations get kick backs… our little business-NOT! Mr. Obama you need a reality check and get to know the people you are spouting off about before you make statements like these!
and Mr. Obama………..Farmers ARE small business owners too! Do you mean to tell me they aren’t building their businesses on their own? I don’t see hoards of people or those taking welfare out in the fields from sun up to sun down working growing crops raising cattle to keep YOU and this nation fed do I? Only our friends and families and their kids and those they hire to help them, but mostly the farmer/land owner himself and his family!

Also we are in the transportation industry and we are the MOST taxed businesses in this country! We pay our taxes we don’t ask for handouts and it is US Small Businesses supporting your growing Welfare counts!
    Sincerly Small Business Owners

I’m impressed at the hard work and wish you all well and much prosperity.

  • Ginger

Taken out of context my hind end! Even in context his statement gets even worse. If it was “roads and bridges” that “allowed” businesses to become successful explain this… there are roads and bridges in totalitarian countries, and the businesses on those roads are pitiful at best. Why then are they not successful?

    • BlueVA

LOL! Maybe because they’re in totalitarian countries? Look up the definition of “totalitarian,” and then I’ll bet you can answer your own question.

  • dan

He didn’t say that..his words were cherry picked to make it seem like he was implying what your stating. And im sure you and your mom know this but continue to spread a lie. Anyone who googles this quote will know what was said. I thought you were christian?

    • Becca

Sorry Dan. Those were his words. You can find the transcript anywhere. I’ve read them in their entire context and I think he means exactly what he said. You can find the full transcript of the speech on ABC, and I recommend you do. In fact, try to find a video of the speech, because the tone in his voice….the disdain…in the paragraph two before the one from which this quote was extracted, I found even more disturbing. In that one he mocked people who felt they were successful because they were smart or worked hard, saying there were plenty of people who were smart and hardworking. How can you say that’s not belittling hardworking business owners? I’m smart and I work hard too, but I would never take away from another’s success just because mine is still in the works.

    • Rafael

Dan obviously you can’t read and nor hear. Obama said exactly what he said. And what does being Christian has to do with anything here? MSNBC is not in this website sir I think you clicked on the wrong one.

    • Gina Hohensee

Did you see the speech? Those were his words and not taken out of context. Yes, EVERY business needs consumers, but to start and maintain a business is not going to happen by anyone but the owner of that business. Period & point blank….No exceptions!

    • Bob

He disrespects everyone who invests in their bushiness, takes out loans (2nd Mortgages), goes without vacations, or goes years without paychecks to reinvest (2 years for my company). Small businesses succeed in spite of Government. Many FAIL Because of Government (taxation and over regulation). Taxes and compliance costs are passed along to the consumer and routinely cost a business sales, or the business tries to operate on a margin that is unsustainable. The United States Government has turned from Guard Dog meant to be taking a small portion of GDP to provide for Common Defense and General Welfare and has become a Behemoth that will Destroy the very System that has fueled and paid for it’s growth.

  • Mossy

Well said Reny Raven. Obama, and most politicians, have it backwards. The Government is nothing without the people. The funds for those roads, bridges, and college educations were provided by the broken backs of the people they’re taxing to death.

  • If the Iranians do go nuclear, Obama can always just say to them, “You didn’t build that.”

The entire Democratic constituency has no clue, especially E Warren from Ma.

Keep on the hunt but remember they are the definition of insanity so showing them might be a moot point.

  • Jennifer Baker

My mother had her own print, copy shop when I was in high school. My step-father had his own masonry company. My father started his own insurance and financial planning business. If I remember correctly, they all did it without government assistance or handouts! We struggled financially but we made it!

    ********************SARAH FOR PRESIDENT!

  • AlwaysFacepalm

oh, your dad built the boats? and the motors? and the boat ramp? and the nets? and the buoys?

you’re (intentionally, most likely) missing the point.

  • Rudeguitar

BlueVA you just proved or further solidified that you socialists really DO have a WARPED viewpoint……Government did not HELP in all of your examples! AMERICAN TAX DOLLARS keep the Government running so WRONG!! the private sector NOT the Government “helped” ……furthermore…since you’re running to pull the foot out of Obama’s mouth why dont you go back and listen to what he said! the quote in question is not who helped you build anything! it’s him saying “YOU DID NOT BUILD THAT!” …..Assuming that the Government DID help…I dont need any community organizer in chief telling me or prejudging how much or how little of MY business I built!! SAY IT LOUD BRISTOL!

  • adice

Let me get this straight. The people authorize it, the people pay for it, the people build it and the government gave it to you?

  • D. Joseph Purcell

Nah, Obama is not trying to destroy small business, thats what republicans do. In fact, they destroy small businesses in favor of huge corporations who donate massive amounts to their campaigns. Dont spin the facts, darlin’ Didnt you once say, that Public sector unions were destroying America? Well, now we know that LIBOR is the reason. Stop pretending your love of small business. If you loved small business so much, why not raise taxes on big corporations and give tax breaks to small businesses that create more middle management and pay better wages and allow opportunity for advancement for ALL hard workers.

    • TOlson

To buy all the crap about Huge Corporations, give me a break. The tax system is the way it is. IT SHOULD be changed. But, corporations hire people and those people pay taxes. Corporations pay taxes too, sometime double taxes since their employees have already paid taxes. When there are profits they can give dividends or bonuses. Sure, some people make a whole lotta money, but that’s the contract that was negotiated! You do believe in contracts right?!?!? And the board that hired the executive agreed to the contract. So to bitch about a bonus when it was agreed upon by all is wrong.
How ‘bout all those taxes that get paid to our government that is supposed to spend that money wisely, yet they don’t!! FRAUD & ABUSE of government programs is rampant. It should be stopped, but is it ISN’T. Where’s our government???
OUR GOVERNMENT is the largest corporation around!! If they were in the private sector most that work for our government would be FIRED due to their mismanagement!!! So, if our current government cared at all about small businesses, they would NOT pass another law, but go through all the laws on the books and simplify things so more people could jump on board, open a small business and put people to work!!

  • Vicky

We are a farm family, trust me Odumbo didn’t build this! God keeps us in business. Yes there are goverment programs to aid farmers, but guess what! Those goverment programs give most of the money to food stamps yep that’s right the money goes to help alot of people who don’t want to work. I’m not saying that all people who accept foos stamsp are freeloaders but alot of them are. When you think about it it’s funny they pass programs to aid in the production of food, yet they money doesn’t go to it, it goes to buy food already grown. Yep great programs we have there! Odumbo doesn’t send the rain, he doesn’t make the seed grow, he sits on his rear waiting for his speech writers to give him more air time. He is a joke! Bristol, I’m proud of you and your family, you’ve shown intellengence in the way you are raising your child. Your mother is a woman I look up to and that scares many people, they are afraid of you also. Women are not suppose to understand politics, the ones who do are putting fear in many people these days. Love ya girl keep up the good work.

    • Sally

I do agree that farmers should get more help and less hoops to jump to make their business work, and I agree that there are many freeloaders on Food Stamps. But, if those people weren’t getting that assistance to purchase the farming goods farmers would go out of business. There is cheaper food than that which comes from a farm if those who are on food stamps couldn’t purchase it due to getting dropped from that program. We are all helping one another no matter where in the circle of life you are. But, it is the government who are helping themselves to our back pockets in every aspect.

    • Oisin OBrien

I’m guessing you grow food on your farm? People with food stamps buy food so you end up doing well out government hand outs in two ways. As for freeloaders, walk a mile in their shoes before making assumptions like that. Aside from that good luck with everything, I hope no droughts or bugs come your way.

  • Maria Wood

My family owns a jewelry store in a small town in Georgia that has been in business for over 50 years because of hard work and dedication. President Obama doesn’t know what it takes to run a small business, much less a country.

  • Rudeguitar

If you have a presidency in 2012 you did’nt build that!! MSNBC and the NAACP plus, a billion dollars of private campaign funding did that for you.

  • Dan Stephens

It kind of makes me wonder…

If someone else is responsible for my success, maybe a teacher or a highway builder or a farmer, why are they neglecting such a large portion of the population?

If it it isn’t he persistence or the risk taking tha makes a person successful, why are so many people not running their own businesses?

If it isn’t the person who had a vision, put forth the leadership and drove the ship through the stormy seas to safe harbor, then it really does matter who the leader is, does it Mr. President? In your case, I accept that premise.

America was founded on that rugged individualism that drove people to carve out their own piece of the world. Americans are not the slaves to the government that are happy to wait in line for the handouts. Americans are driven to succeed, because we strive to be our best and to do our best.

It doesn’t take much vision to look around the world and see what the one remaining super power is. It’s the one that recognizes the accomplishments of the entrepeneur, the individual, the person that strives for more. When we lose that, we lose the American Dream. When you deny that, you deny America and that is what defines you, Mr. President, as Unamerican.

  • And you are rightfully proud of all your parents have built!
In stark contrast, Mr. Obama knows only how to destroy.

  • kevin oconnor

You’re either a liar, or just plain stupid.

  • Rafael

Bristol I love you girl… Keep up the great work you are doing as a mom.

  • how do I send a photo?

  • T Schneider

I like this. Our president is so far out of touch with the small business owners and employees it makes me sick. Really Mr President? SB owners didnt do it? Then Please, by all means, come work with my husband on a rooftop running lines in 100 degree heat, snaking sewer drains full of shit on a daily basis. coming home with scrapes and cuts just to get whats left of a paycheck after the “all mighty union” takes their cut and the government even more. Please Mr. President. Enjoy your flushing toilets and running water everyday because Im willing to bet that the White house Plumber started with a SB and through blood sweat and harder work that you have ever done made himself a name that gave him the reputation that was ABLE TO GET HIM THE JOB for your “precious” ass.

    • Emma Lora

Concise, and easy to understand!! Appreciated your post and good luck with the outcome of your hard work!! Best Wishes!!

  • Robert

alright, not defending our President, but frankly, having worked for many businesses in the past, small ones run with only a crew of 4 or so people, the OWNER gets all the credit. Didn’t see the owner there when I was rewiring his network. Didn’t see the owner there when I set up his customer database, so he could service his customers faster. Didn’t see my owner there when I had to come in at 2 am to defend our website and online services. But I keep hearing the Owner saying “I built this business”. How about saying “we built this business”. Sorry, but that’s where I think the words are getting lost over the rhetoric of conservative vs. liberal. “We” built this business. “We” built this country. “We” made it happen. To put up “I” and not include all the other people that work, day in and day out, to help your business remain the powerhouse it is today is insulting to your employees. And frankly, most employees work just as hard as the owners, without the honor, and at about 1/4 of the pay. If “I” don’t start my own business, I’m paid less, so that the “I” saying he built the business can have more. Credit where credit is due: “We built this, Mr. President”

  • We are with y’all from the lone star state !!!

  • bellagrazi

Great idea, Bristol! The only thing Obama has built is a mountain of debt for this country. My grandfather came over on a boat from Italy (legally) in the 20’s and built a successful construction business. He would love the Palin’s! He respected hard work.

    • I can’t believe how some republicans who claim to be Christian can twist the truth the way they do! Do they think the “common” people as Romney calls us are stupid or what? Sarah, you know perfectly well what the president was saying. You know he said the individual has to have initiative. But, he is right! Someone else built the roads or the boats or maybe just gave moral support..but no American in this country has ever succeeded by just “me, myself, and I.” And, having a lot of money is not what makes a person truly successful anyway..tell the whole truth..it may help some republicans to do so.

  • Antoine Loup

Bristol, I have not had a chance to read the other comments, but I do hope your reading comprehension is greater than what it appears. Pronouns can be difficult, but normally you may need to look at an entire paragraph versus a single sentence. To make this country great again maybe we need to stop with the misleading statements and focus on solutions that work. It means not trying to attack people for misspeaking or taking things out of context. It means working with people and knowing everyone does have the best interests of the country at heart. Anyone who reads the entire speech knows that the president said it is about individuals working hard and using the infrastructure that the rest of the country built. Maybe it is fun for you to take things out of context in order to mock someone who actually believes the same thing you do… but that is your choice of how you behave – if that is acceptable to you, then so be it… however that also means you will have no problem doing the same thing to you or your family right?

  • Lori Wright

This president needs to go! Obama looks down on every hard working American. Take note that when he addresses the country he speaks as if Americans are stupid and beneath him. My family has worked extremely hard to provide a living and build a business that we can pass down for generations and if the American people do not start taking a stand, everyone who ever build a business will be able to hold a sign that says “Obama destroyed this!”

  • Robert E. Moreau, DVM, ACVECC

    Ms. Palin,
You are taking this completely out of context. Mr. Obama was stressing that a successful business is not made in a vacuum. No business success nor failure is made by one person. That was, of course, Mr. Obama’s point. If you are truly against this idea, then please respond. Taking a single sentence out of context is certainly a political technique but it falls flat to any voter, of any persuasion, that has a scintilla of intelligence. I am a Republican who supports Mr. Obama when he says we are a society that needs each other, we care about each other. We are connected. I do not support any view that purports we are all in this alone. We are NOT a country of every person for themselves. That is certainly a step backward.

  • M Baker

Read the whole statement and not just what Fox played and you’ll learn what he really said, and it isn’t what Fox claims.

      Here’s the EXACT quote:

Obama continued. “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

    • Eric

      M. Baker.. Keep on drinking the koolaid…

    • Johnnie Baptista

I saw it when it was said and all of it only makes
it worse ,what a dummy .

    • facepalm

M Baker says: “Read the whole statement and not just what Fox played and you’ll learn what he really said, and it isn’t what Fox claims.”

…Oh, come now M Baker. You know the Palins have no need for silly little facts…or evidence…or reason…or decorum…

    • John Hill

M Baker. How about you explain what he said? Your statement in itself is what you are claiming Fox of doing. I however watched the entire speech… and not on Fox. How about justifying your claim.

    • karla

I heard the whole statement and still thought is was ignorant.

    • betsy sardina

did that—started with his class warfare —rich have to pay their fair share—–If I was Bill Clinton–party or not—I would ask him to stop using his name because at least Bill understood that you get people off the system by reducing benefits and setting limits–he also listened to the American people and stopped pushing for government run healthcare. This president encourages enablement, lack of responsibility, and non-accountability for personal life choices. If you continue to give a wild animal food you endanger their ability to hunt and feed themselves…..If you increase benefits for those who do not work you enable them to remain unemployed. I am not saying that there are not people out there who need help but if you look at this country’s history the more you give people something for nothing the more people become dependent on the system. You do not go into poverty stricken countries and support them with handouts unconditionally—you give them the tools and skills they need to take care of themselves so they can prosper without the handouts….Undoubtedly if this becomes (and we are heading there very quickly) a country of takers the makers will slowly disappear.

    • Justin Casey

You’re right. I read the whole statement. It’s actually much worse than Fox claims.

    • SunnyJ

The “kill FOX” meme gets just as old and works as well as the “kill Romney” meme has been! What part of htis don’t you get? FOX has made it all available, multiple discussions with all kinds of opinions have been aired. You can read it in entirety without inflection of any kind. The President said it and meant it. His tone is dripping with mockery of those “that think they’re so smart” or “..work harder”. It’s not about FOX M Baker and Obama…it’s about Obama.

    • Annnnd you couldn’t be bothered to post a link? Since you were taking exception to the post…… Meh….

    • B Chappelear

If you really paid attention, you would know that FoxNews played the entire film clip several times. Since that didn’t fit your agenda, you may have decided to ignore that fact.

    • frank cangialosi

the whole quote is worse than the clip. it is obvious that he believe that everything comes from government and as such the government then has the right to take its ‘fair share’. what else would a marxist think. this man has to go. NObama 2012. great idea bristol!

    • Cindy

I did listen to the entire thing – and yes – it is exactly as FOX has reported. In fact, it is even more condescending when you listen to the entire thing. You are the one trying to mislead by implying that FOX puled an NBC.

  • Shopclass

Lets get the facts straight. President Obama inherited this mess from Bush. Here’s a handy chart to show you in pictures: http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/adding-to-the-deficit-bush-vs-obama/2012/01/31/gIQAQ0kFgQ_graphic.html

So Obama doesn’t know how small business works but Bristol Palin does??? Ummmm ok

    • crash43

Yea we’ll depend on the Palin’s to get it right..lol she can’t even control her son (Life’s a Tripp) ..maybe instead of worrying about what Obama says you should be a good parent first.

  • I’d like to send a picture of my business and my dad’s business but I’m not sure how to send the pictures to you! I think this is great and you are an amazing person!

  • betsy sardina

you are right what he actually said was that “If you are successful you didn’t get there on your own”–saw the speach—start by telling the “rich to pay their fair share” class warfare crap he always dishes out…..My parents had me in there teens along with my sister and then later came my brother….they worked sometimes 2 jobs while putting themselves through school-never saw them growing up—they struggled which taught them to be frugal–they saved bought a house and when a business known as Sussex Tool became available for sale they risked everything and bought it—then they worked 12-14hr days 7 days a week and grew the business which now has chains in 3 states—–NEWS FLASH MR. PRESIDENT—THEY DID IT ON THEIR OWN!!!!!! and I challenge you to prove to me any differently—no food stamps,no hand outs…just hard work, ambition, and a little luck–well maybe the tax policies of Ronald Reagan helped them as they struggled to make the small business a success! I raise my kids the same way–If you want something you work for it—if it is important enough to you you make sacrifices–NOTHING IN LIFE IS FREE! You cannot call for prosperity if it is burdened on the backs of others!

  • To the whole Palin crew and family~
I was so impressed with your running for VP, sorry it was with John McCain, knew he wasnt going anywhere but was hoping you were, dont give up, never surrender, run again. the US needs some one like you Sarah. From my family to yours, we love you and God bless!!!!!!!

Yes, Tripp was a real cutie saying I hate you and dropping the f bomb on the show Tues nite.

  • Carlos

Reps are doing what they do best and that is to take words out of context and fool the American people. The POTUS was talking about building roads and bridges. Whether you like it or not, small businesses DID NOT build those roads and bridges. City\Government workers did. WE ALL helped those government workers with build those roads and bridges by paying our taxes to the government. I suggest you all get the whole story straight before critizising. So much for being a good Christian Bristol. I don’t think God said that we should lie and decive people, which is what you are doing with this article. Keep being ignorant, is that what you will teach your child? instead of being a follower, be a leader and speak the facts. You don’t needs to be a geniues to figure out what the President was talking about. If you don’t understand the message then you need to go back and educate yourself. Oh, and BTW, the schools that educate us are paid for by the government, by the people of the US, not small businesses. Shame on you Bristol Palin!!!

  • sam

the full quote, but don’t let facts get in the way of a jab
: “Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive, If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that.’

  • HeavyG

Your dad did not build his fishing business. He got his fishing rights from his grandfather who had fishinig rights due to governemnt action and treaties. So Obama’s point is exactly made right there.

  • Sue

Great blog! Love seeing the photos and hearing the stories. We have always made this country great with risk taking and entrepreneurial aptitudes. I also love how you have picked yourself up and are standing strong considering the beating you took when your Mom was running for V.P.

  • GrizzlyMom

Bristol I hope your mother didn’t finance any of her college education with student loans. I also hope she doesn’t use any roads or electricity or the internet or anything else that ALL of us (because WE are the government…its not some boogie-monster entity) built together. The Presidents message was about responsibility. Of course conservatives are far to consumed with hate and greed to understand that.

    • conservativemama

Go learn something first before typing. Sarah Palin worked her way through college.

    • Jennifer

Really? Greedy? I’m not greedy. I’m a teacher at a school that is 80% impoverished. I pay my taxes, I buy supplies for my school and attend trainings at my own expense. I love my students and want them to grow up to be productive citizens that contribute to the economy. I buy locally as often as I can. I AM A CONSERVATIVE because I was raised to believe that if we work hard, we deserve an honest wage and to be treated fairly. FAIRLY means that I can afford to take a vacation once in a while. I’ve been on two since I graduated college back in 1985. FAIRLY means that if I am required to pass a drug test to earn a paycheck, the persons collecting welfare from my taxed income also have to pass that drug test. I would love to be self-employed. Someday I may be. I love teaching, but someday I’d love to pursue other passions as well. I am not hateful or greedy. I want my FAIR SHARE!

      • Jesus

Your conservative friends would say you are a failure because you chose a profession that doesn’t pay enough. They would blame you and tell you to take responsibility for your own life.

      • BlueVA

Then who’s responsible for raising your teacher’s salary, CONSERVATIVE Jennifer? Tax payers?! Where will the money come from to give you your FAIR SHARE? Work harder! Get another, higher-paying job! That’s the Republican way!

‎…so who took all the RISKS to build these businesses?…Who took the time to prepare, innovate, organize, plan, research, promote, meet legal requirements, meet payroll, pay taxes, and especially raise FUNDING to make a business successful?….

    • B Chappelear

Let’s back up a second here. What makes you think that all of these successful (and unseccessful) business people did not pay their share of taxes to pay for all of the infrastructure your post mentions. “Hate and greed”? You guys are so gullible.

    • TOlson

No, you can’t change what he said. He’s the President and he should say what he means! He said, if you’ve got a business you didn’t build it. Oh really??!?!?!

The investment my hubby made to start his business, wasn’t his?!?!? The sweat, the fear, the business proposal, the investment in the opportunity to possibly achieve something…oh I guess others were there taking that on too, we just didn’t know. Boy, I would have liked more capital to make it work easier. But no, we took it all on our own backs!!!

The only ones I hear using foul language, name calling & greed are far left. They hide under the guise of caring, but look at all the major cities in the US; all Democrat and all have HUGE issues. Crime rate, unemployment, etc.

Stop saying untruths!!! Hey, look at Glenn Beck’s event at Washington DC. No fights and everyone picked up their trash. I guess all those people at that event were filled with hate & greed, based on their behavior.

    • betsy sardina

Student loans that are paid back with interest? How about this– No one should be able to vote unless they pay property taxes? The fact of the matter is that those roads and bridges are built with tax payer dollars that are used by the non-tax-payers who are sitting around complaining that they do not have enough and waiting for Mr. Obama to give them another handout! I am sure the Palin’s are taxpayers so they paid for that road and used that road–they also paid for the guy who did not pay taxes to use that road—Does that make the Palin’s more or less responsible for any success they achieve than the guy who never paid for that road to begin with? Mr Obama also won the election because people wanted an end to the war–a promise he broke. He promised no more taxes on people making less than $250K/year–and that was a lie…He said with his plan for saving healthcare we could keep our own private insurance plans—only to find out that my employer along with many others will be dumping our plans because it will be cheaper to pay the fine–really thought that one out right Mr. President? What about creating jobs—–He was the “Great Black Hope” and anyone of minority was ridiculed and harassed if they did not support him—-He got the ignorant to believe him and now that he’s there he has done nothing but abuse his powers at the expense of this great country. I am not consumed with hate—I love my children and care about the state of this economy and the debt left behind by reckless government spending—-I am not the one who is greedy here because I believe in personal accountability…It is those who want something for nothing–Mr Obama’s fan club—that are the greed ones!

      • Jesus

Did you complain about bush and his wars? I doubt ot

    • Igor

If you aren’t aware, small businesses generate high amount of tax revenue for the United States. Where do you think a big chunk of money for all those things you mentioned coming from? Santa Claus?

    • Igor

I own a paint store. This store has been in business for 12 years. I never got a single loan from government even when housing bubble collapsed back in 2008 and many hardware stores and lumber yards closed their doors. At the same time, my store still pays almost $100k per year in taxes and employs 6 people and all of them have families to feed. When my business is slow, do I ask money from government? No. I just don’t get paid even if I work 70+ hours a week. Both Local and federal governments keep on changing laws and regulations every year to make them more strict, since everybody wants a piece of pie when it comes to receiving money from fines and permits that small business owners like me constantly have to pay.
P.S. I forgot to mention that I took out a home equity loan to start my business and I paid it all back without governments help.

  • Chad Burke

Do all us FISHes a favor, Bristol and post your sources. I’d like to hear the speech and see context on your presumably hack and slashed quotation before I either praise or condemn.
That said, assuming Bristol actually reads any of these, I want to give you something to think on in the future of your publications. I’m about your age, so I hope you can see why this is so important, but you need to be careful not to fall into some of the pits your mother has dug out for you. If your views are one way, that’s fine. If you think Obamacare was a bad idea, and your mother should be where Biden has been sitting for the past 3 years and change, fine, Whatever. The beauty of America is choice. But do us all a favor, all the kids in their early 20s, all the next generation of America. Look at most of the comments on this post. Hell. look at any note Sarah has put out on Facebook and check out the kind of responses she gets. Every comment is full of hate, and ignorance, and arrogance, and it’s due to the attitude of our parents and their parents. Don’t follow them in that. Learn to speak facts not feeling. Don’t just be some whiny teenaged witch, because a lot of eyes are on you. On us, even. We’re the future. We’re progress, and tirades and backwards thinking are what keep us from moving forward.

    • sarah

If you haven’t seen the presidents quote in the headlines over the past few days your the one in the wrong. Its been everywhere and she didn’t need to hack or slash anything. Please try not to sound so ignorant in your future posts

  • So the government that taxes me on the money I make in the business I built is saying THEY built it? With what? With whose money? On whose back? With whose know-how? With who working 40-65 hours/week? I heard the whole speech and know exactly what Obama said and it is socialist speech, saying the “elite” have what they have because they built it on the backs of the “people”. It doesn’t matter whose mouth it comes out of, Fidel or Hugo or Obama, it is wrong at its core and evil in its intent.

  • Bob

Wouldn’t it be nice if, instead of focusing on a single phrase taken out of context, we actually listened to or read, and commented on, the entire speech. It’s only about three paragraphs long – I know, still too long to keep the ADHD generation interested.

I also find this highly ironic in light of your mom’s claim that every other question a reporter asks her is a “gotcha” question, or that she has been misrepresented, misquoted, or had her quote taken out of context by the media. I guess blatant hypocrisy is alive and well. I found this blog from her twitter account, btw.

  • MontanaGirl

I agree that history shows the US Government did play a part in the success of small businesses. Their part was butting out and giving hard workers opportunities. Now, our greedy politicians are taxing these businesses to other counties or in the ground. Throw party affiliations, and so many ridiculous entitlements, out the door and put what’s in the best interest of our country back on the table. Our government has turned into such a joke it’s shameful.

  • Rico2013

Wow, all the liberals & ur bitterness makes my head want to explode! Government can not run if there is no one working!!! A successful business makes money and pays TAXES to the government!! Government does not make money on their own. They only know how to spend it & over spend it!! They can’t fight their way out of a wet paper bag!! Just look at everything they try to control, everything is in debt, broke!! We r the wealthiest nation in the world!! And look where we r!!! Really sad!! If a person who decides(the gov’t had no part in this) to open a business, it is opened on their merits, and hard work and their time to make it successful!! it is the businessman/woman paying all the bills and making payroll not the government!! And for myself being in business it is me building it. No one is helping me and I do not have public schools to thank for the majority of my education! I went to Private schools!! Even the public schools are failing our children!! That needs an overhaul!! Look at where we r educationally in the world!! Look at the drop out rate!! So, I wouldn’t go boasting too much about how our education system is so great, because sadly it is not!!! I would like my business to be as successful as it was 4 years ago, I have had a steady decline in my business under this Presidency, and I can not afford another 4 years like the past 3 1/2 years it is too stressful. As for Paul Ryan using his dads Social security money to pay for his education. His DAD worked & put his own money into that system!!! If hard working people did not get up everyday there would be no tax money collected! The government did not tell these people to get up everyday.Like Bristol’s dad HE got up everyday on HIS own & worked and paid HIS part of taxes that pays the FDA etc… Everyone in the government needs to be held accountable!! The problems our nation is facing needs real solutions and all this back & forth my side must win at all costs needs to stop!! We should be thanking the businessman/women for taking the chance to do it by themselves and making our country the great place it is and can be better if the gov’t would just get out of our way!!

  • maggie grimm

Bristol, you were raised the right way, as was I. I watched my brother-in-law and sister build a business. they got no government assistance. did it all with his brains and hard work.

Bristol, I love how quickly and cleverly you and your mom respond to the nonsense of the day. Well done and keep up the great work.

I really did take offense when I heard that the Prez made this comment. He has no clue what it is like to run a small business. We built a logging business from the ground up. Started with old used equipment, and when it wore out, was replaced with new pieces. It has never been easy. The payments often feel like weights around our necks, but with small town America, where you know your banker and your bank, it is still possible. Been in business for 27 years now. Gone through the good and the bad. No government bailouts, no government subsidies, no government programs at all to suppliment the logger and his (or in my case – her) plight. When my husband was on his death bed and we needed some help, guess what? Because we owned a business and were self employed, we did not qualify for any type of government help- even Hospice. So you tell me, WHO BUILT THIS? Oh yes, our lovely government even took BACK the Social Security check that was issued in the month he died. Drafted it out of the bank. As a logger, I know there is contoversy about cutting down ‘all of the trees’. Statistics prove that the trees are growing faster than we are cutting them down. And if you think LOGGERS dont give back anything, check out Arkansas Childrens Hospital to see who bought Angel 2. The state of the art helicopter, set on go, fully staffed 24/7, complete with an ECMO machine. It is a program called ‘Log-a-Load for Kids’. Not only do we build small businesses, but we maintain them, make them profitable, even if we have to do without, and continue to contribute to the good of the community and the state as a whole. We did indeed BUILD THIS. We will defend it, with weapons if necessary. And no, I will not be voting democrat in the fall. I would rather vote for my rat terrier. She has more sense than all of the politicians in Washington… I will get off my soapbox, now, but I will vote!

    • BlueVA

You got a loan from your bank — that’s help. If your funds are FDIC protected — that’s government help. And who are you going to raise your weapons against, southern belle? I wouldn’t post that on the Internet if I were you.

  • Some say his quote was taken out of context but his attitude towards small business (we “Little Red Hens”) was not taken out of context. He has no clue where wealth comes from. Government, all I ask from you is to provide a good infrastructure and protection from pirates. My business colleagues and I will do the rest, thank you.

    • LindaP

If you listen or read the entire comment it is even worse than just that one comment mention above!!!!

    • Grizz

He knows where it comes from because he knows exactly where to go get it. He takes it from those who builds things. If you really think about what he is doing, he is just inflaming those who don’t understand. He plays on those who actually don’t know how wealth is created. The dumb masses will listen to his words and believe it to so. Look at how so many still believe in what he says and disregards his actions and outcome.

  • Pull your head out

So are you republicans now saying that taxes are good because all of the great services we all share have helped everyone succeed in some way or another. Hmm think about what you are saying when you say that TAXPAYER money built the government. I wonder why that happened, and you can’t blame the democrats for that one.

    • Jeffrey Bossingham

so being on welfare and food stamps is succeeding wow how times have change

    • Common Cents

@ “Pull”-With that kind of twisted logic and mis-reading of the story, its no wonder you’re a Democrat/ liberal…or whatever lost association you find yourself in.

    • Lori Wright

Republicans do not disagree with paying taxes….we disagree with the mismanagement of them (ex: Social Security)!

      • Dennis McHale

Congrats Lori. You in one sentence described why the TEA Party exists and why we are in the position in this country that we are. It really is as simple as you state. Government meet your obligations and we will reward you with more. Just don’t take like a child at a candy store and demand we pay for it.

        • MotherBush

Tell that to the department of defense Dennis.

  • Carol Meyer

Those of us who pay taxes have already paid our fair share towards helping to build and maintain the roads. Yes, we use electricity, but we also PAY for it. To Grizzly Mom I say: Yes, we used to be the government, but our representatives do not represent us any longer. They think they know better than we do what we want and need. They are bankrupting our country against the will of the people. We did not want THAT healthcare bill and over 60% of us let our congressmen and women know it, but they just did what they wanted anyway, regardless of our wishes. We knew healthcare needed fixing, but that is not the way. We are NOT socialists and do not want to live that way. There is not one country in this world where this method has worked successfully….and, of course, it will not affect any of the congress, the senate or the President! Just as in social security, they have their own plan–a better plan, that will be there for them. May God have mercy on us all!

    • Jesus

Carol you participate in socialism everyday whether you want to admit it or not

      • Dennis McHale

        Jesus, how sad, how true.

        • MotherBush

          Why is it sad Dennis?

    • BlueVA

“There is not one country in this world where this method has worked successfully.” If you’re talking about healthcare, then that is a lie.

    • Olson10

Please, tell us more about your experiences with socialized medicine in every county. Tell us about how it’s failed so miserably in countries like, Norway, for example.

    • I agree Carol May God have mercy on all of us. There was a time when all the charity work was done by the church not the Govermnet, thats why people gave their money to the church willingly. Now the Goverment wants to be god. I say yes May Our God in Heaven have mercy on us.

    • crash43

And Todd didn’t build that small fishing business from ground up..it was passed down through his Native Heritage..who does Bristol think those fishing permits came from and the free Native Health they can get and the native Land claims Act, the dividends from the Native Corporations??

      • MotherBush

Exactly crash, Obama set this up perfectly. Conservatives will once again have a knees jerk reaction and drive his point home.

  • What have you done mr prez??? How much of a sacrifice do you and your family make to make ends meet????? Such a smart idiot:/

    • MotherBush

He certainly wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth like George W.

  • Kim

My grandfather built his business without help from the Gov’t. I ran my own small business without any help from the Gov’t. My husband and I HAD a small business, but lost it BECAUSE of the gov’t. There was no way we could keep up with the payroll taxes and the disability insurance in California. We had to let everyone go. Gov’t TAKES, it never gives, in spite of what the liberals on the take may think. I admire you and your family, you are remarkably tough to stand up to the horrid abuse people dish out. I have no respect for people who behave like that, and they don’t deserve it. They are self aggrandizing blowhards. God bless you and your family.

  • So let me get this straight, we the people created a Goverment gave them our money ( I would say we built that ). So we go to schools that are paid for by our money (I would say we built that) We drive on roads paid for by our money (I would say we built that). We elected the jerks that sit in Goverment and pay them (I would say at times sorry but we built that ) So it seems to me something is backwards about the Goverment taking credit for our success, so let me ask who was here first? Columbus, the Indians or the Goverment ?????? I guess the goverment schools taught me the wrong history.

    • Olson10

Notice how many times you just used the word: “we”. The government is “we” as you just pointed out. So, you must understand his point: that a 100% of a business’s success cannot be a result of just its hard working owners. Society contributed to that success in some way.

      • Yes, We the people pay our taxes so the Goverment can go on vacations and hand our money out like candy. The Goverment is not “WE” it is us and them we pay them to do a job, and many of them should be fired and will be.

        • MotherBush

Great start with all the republicans who never saw a spending bill they didn’t like Kathy.

Here’s a story of the American Dream: My mom and dad moved to California in 1953 in search for greener pastures. With some help of my uncle my dad got a job working at FMC welding tanks. Anyway, they managed to a parcel of land with a small one room cottage on it. They already had two kids when they moved from KS., and then suddenly I popped out (1956). Well, that little house was way too little and as a little toddler I remember standing up on the couch where I slept on and saw my dad put out stakes in the ground. That was where our new house was built. And, he did build it, by hand, a board at a time when ever he had a few bucks in his pocket and he nailed it together. I wasn’t lavish… it was functional. It was also built with love of family. Just 3 bedrooms, but built to stay. My dad died in it in 1990 and so did my brother in 2004. You see, legacy is a part of the American Dream. Making your impression on your children, giving them that everlasting love. Love to pass on to others. It also gives you backbone. The backbone of freedom. To say that ‘you did not build it’ is so empty headed of our President. You have to wonder it he knows which end of a claw hammer to use?

This is a beautiful and poignant story! Thank you for sharing it 🙂

  • Vulcan Alex

Most of the services provided according to the president are from state or local governments. Education, police, roads etc. The president got carried away by his foolish crowd and went way overboard.

  • Tawny Jones

Excellent idea, Bristol! Thanks for standing tall and speaking for the little guy.

  • Racquel Duchesneau

the only thing Obama knows is bashing others. He has no clue what a true American is muchless hard work and self respect.

  • jeff

clearly you guys dont really understand the statement of the president. what he means is no one does anything in this country alone, we’re all a part of it together.

    • MotherBush

Thank you Jeff and I completely agree. Conservatives are just looking for something to grab on to because their candidate is so lack luster.

    • crash43

They only believe what they are told to believe…SAD!

  • I sent you a couple pix on twitter of my glass studio where I make Lampwork Beads, not exactly hot sellers lately. Someday soon, when Liberty’s restored, creativity won’t be thwarted so and we will prosper again. My husband took a second job until then.

  • jeff

i mean for example, there’s a picture of a fisherman saying “my dad built this”, however i highly doubt that guy’s dad built that boat, the fishing poles, his fishing waders, his boots, his hat, his sungalsses, that yamaha case, or anything else in the boat. in other words he couldnt be where he is without the work of tons of other people.

    • Erica Jambon

Troll. Pick another site. No one said you have to participate. My grandfather built his own business based on the strength of his his word. He didn’t get a small business loan from the government, someone had a need and he said “If you give me a chance, I won’t let you down.” Yes, there was an infrastructure in place to make sure the supplies he bought (made by others, of course) reached their destination, but the government had nothing to do with his first customers choosing him. I like this idea and will send a picture soon!

Sarah Palin clearly has taken things out of context. Perhaps she missed the two terms the Republicans used under George Bush’s administration to destroy our American economy and businesses with their stupid failed policies that she is still supporting. Sarah needs to get a life, her own life and give us Americans and Obama a break. She gives Alaska a bad name. Preach to someone else Sarah we Californians dont carre for you.

    • Michael

If you don’t care for her, why are you “wasting your time” (1) reading Bristol’s blog and (2) commenting on it?? Apparently, you care more than you want to admit even to yourself.

    • sodakhic

The economy tanked when the stupid Dems took control of the House in 2007. Thanks Pelosi you are a loser.

  • Tobeh

Am I the only one who sees the mistake made when making this article? The quote was “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that; somebody else made that happen.” Then the example you use is “My dad built this!”

Your dad isn’t you, meaning you didn’t build that business, meaning somebody else made that business for you, leaving us at an accurate statement.

I’d also like to point out that you picked a total of 9 words out of this entire speech (http://www.washingtontimes.com/blog/watercooler/2012/jul/15/picketvideo-obama-if-youve-got-business-you-didnt-/) and that when picked out of context, sound bad, but when left in the middle of his speech, at least make sense. He wasn’t saying you didn’t build anything, he was saying that clearly some one must have helped you along the way, maybe they didn’t, congrats, you’re a minority, and what he said didn’t apply to you, so get that stick out of your ass.

If this website is going to masquerade as somewhat of a news source at least have some integrity. Oh wait, it’s a blog related to Palin. HA.

    • MotherBush

I thought the same thing. You didn’t build that Bristol why are you posting this.. The palins are a joke.

      • crash43

My Dad built this..exactly what is she saying he built?? the boat, it was order through a company in Seattle, the gear, the fishing permit was handed down through his family so they built it up and passed it to Todd..what did Todd build?

        • MotherBush

Why are none of the Tea Parties hicks refuting your points crash43. Thats right…because they cant. Once again the palins have made fools of themselves. Hilarious.

          • crash43

They’re making fool of the people who listen to them.

  • I love this idea. Nothing greater than the American Dream.

  • JP

I’ve read all of the posts, regarding this issue, on this blog. Some really great and inspiring stories here! I also visited MANY of the websites that each contributor posted, and will be making a couple of purchases from some of these great folks..

For everyone that’s reading this blog, let’s all support these GREAT small businesses across the country! The internet gives us the ability to buy from small businesses EVERYWHERE!

Despite your ridicule of small business owners, Mr President, WE can do our part to contribute to the growth of the greatest industry ever on the face of this great Earth…. The Small Business Owner!

    • Georgia

      Well said, JP!

      • JP

Thanks, Georgia… by the way, the cheesecake looks awesome! One on the way!

  • sodakhic

The libs have no clue about business. They think Corporations, that provide jobs for people, aren’t people. Talk about stupid. They think if you have a successful business, you didn’t really do it, it was the pizza dude that helped you out. Sorry. No one paid my 15.3% self employment tax, no one paid my outragious workmans comp, no one paid my employees, healthcare, unemployment insurance, matching federal tax on employees. Obama is clueless. and 21 year old Bristol knows more than the Chicago community organizer

  • Mary

A lot of these pictures and stories are very inspiring. We need a like button.

  • Lillian

You people get some thicker skin and recognize that President Obama’ s use of his words did not mean what you thought you heard and positively not what the GOP tells you what you heard. Just a poor choice of words twisted to mean what you want to hear or are told to hear!

    • Julie Morris

I heard Obama’s campaign manager try to explain what on Fox news what Obama really meant to say and it did not improve my perception of what his real meaning was. He said that Small bussiness owes thier success to the internet and that the internet was created by the Government and Roads and Schools etc…. The government is not intellegent nor hard working enough to do that. Sombody else made that happen. They contracted with the defence industry for the internet. Private companies that created the technology that made the internet possible. Then intellegent and hardworking americans (like my husband an engineer and computer genious) developed the internet. All the government did was purchase that technology origanally for defence purposes. They can’t take credit for that. I totally agree with you about what he said being a poor choice of words. he can explain his true meaning anytime. We are all listening.

    • Ben Montgomery

Lillian, you are right. Who are we going to believe, the liberals or our lying ears! Thanks for playing, please try again (but wait until after November to give other Americans a chance).

    • JP

Here are his EXACT words…. “UNTWIST” them for us, please!

Obama continued. “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

    • dugbru

OMG now we need closed captioning on Obama’s speaches, so that some dumbed down Obama momma can explain to us what Obama REALLY meant to say. Just like they had to explain Kerry’s remarks about “ending up in Iraq.

NEWS FLASH for all you Obama mommas.. He said what he said, he meant to say it , and he meant what he meant..

    • Gwen

You people get some thicker skin and recognize that President Obama’ s use of his words did not mean what you thought you heard and positively not what the GOP tells you what you heard. Just a poor choice of words twisted to mean what you want to hear or are told to hear!<<

I agree, but they're having so much fun with it, aren't they? All the business owners get to be indignant and the pretend business owners get to pretend to be business owners. The rest get a chance to bash President Obama. On the surface, it does little harm in this little corner. On the larger scale, it lets the black, moldy, underhanded liars get away with just one more lie.

So, we come on here and argue to the truth. That being, President Obama has given that same speech a couple of dozen times by now and apparently was trying to give it in his sleep or something because he dropped a line or two and what remained was a veritable feast for the rabid right.

And hey, all those who disagree with reality get to accuse us of being "on the dole." If I had a dime for every time I've heard that on the internet, I could, well, start another business 😉

    • Lillian,
I heard him and what he said loud and clear and I am afraid he can’t back peddle out of this one.
This is his mind set and you are fooling yourself if you believe that was just a poor choice of

  • Irene

Here’s an idea … how about googling the President’s remarks and listening to the entire speech. That is NOT what he said, and you all know it.

  • AFW

So, am I to understand that the salmon fisher built his own boats, secures his own water, and protects the salmon from harmful environmental conditions? And who buys his salmon? How does he get them to market? Did he make all those things himself? No, he didn’t. Yes, he had the courage to forge his own fate, took the chance, and should reap the benefits of his hard work, but he hardly accomplished that in a vacuum…

    • JP

We are talking about “his” business, AFW. Not the people that he BOUGHT the equipment from. Not the people who REGULATE him and how/when he fishes. Not the people that he BOUGHT the truck that transported the salmon to market in. Not the people that BOUGHT the product from the fisherman. These are all the OTHER PEOPLE that have their OWN small businesses and reap the benefits of this fisherman that decided to start his own small business. And we are certainly not talking about the government, that has NO risk in a new business but feels entitled to tax and regulate them from the very beginning. And then “penalize” them as they grow bigger and bigger because it is their responsibility to take care of the others that don’t have the balls to go out and make it on their own. It is the fisherman that BUILT his business by taking the initial risk, suffering through the start up pains that they all go through, endured the long hours of work away from their families because they couldn’t afford to hire anyone to help them, watched as their business began to thrive, hired the people that would help it grow, hired some more, paid their taxes, paid some more, and continue to endure the ever increasing tax burden and ridiculous regulations passed down by our nanny state.

I applaud the fisherman and thank him for buying that boat from ME!

      • JP
        Bravo ! Very well said!!!!

    • Gwen

Exactly! I've heard President Obama give that speech, I don't know how many times. I saw the clip that has been played over and over and over again by slobbering Republicans who think they've somehow caught him in some trap. In actuality, he was hot and tired and didn't word it correctly that ONE TIME and the opportunists bit. They've shoved it out to their masses, told them what the President meant and viola. Instant indignation. Honed throughout the Bush administration, played continuously throughout the Obama administration. Some of them keep their indignation in their back pocket, ready to whip out at a moment's notice. When it comes to anything Obama, well, there it is.

BTW, I didn't go through all the slides up there but I did most of them. And, knowing what I do, I guarantee that at least 90% of those businesses listed have paid fewer taxes every year since 2009. I guarantee it.

      • MotherBush

As my good friend BlueVa would say. Rock on Gwen!

  • Chris

My Dad and two friends built a steel business from the ground up. They had no government handouts. They put in the time, equity, and heavy lifting to make it a go. No one from the government was there to lend a hand, only there to take taxes on payroll and inventory, or to inspect for violations. And yes, Obama said exactly what he meant. He has said it before. He believes Government is all to the people. Government only exists because of the people. Without tax payers, there is no government.

  • ytacy

Another Palin , will it ever end?

    • MotherBush

Afraid not ytacy…clearly they have never heard of contraception.

  • Georgia

Bristol, this article is wonderful! Obama is not a builder of anything. He tears down that which others create.

    • MotherBush

What exactly has he torn down Georgia?

      • Joyce

The Constitution for one and our liberty along with it.

      • Vote

MB… Obviously you do not own a business. Obama has torn the soul out of free enterprise with attacks on businesses, extreme regulations, a health “care” system that will kill jobs and is opposed by the MAJORITY of Americans, taxation threats that will close tens of thousands of businesses…

As a small business person (two employees) I can go on… and on… and on… and on…

If you only owned a business…

But then why would you … You have Uncle Sugar!

  • George K. Paleos,PE

Mr. President, you have no clue what you’re talking about or what you’re doing for that matter. Let me tell you my personal story so you may understand the greatness of America. Here it is Sir.

I immigrated to this blessed land called America from my native Greece with a highschool diploma on hand and exactly $7.10 in my pocket when I disembarked from the boat that brought me to New York on September 21, 1959. I was 19 years old. I spoke not one word of English, and no work skills of any kind. But I had boundless determination to succeed. And I did Mr. President. I did Mr. President without student loans or government help of any kind but the old fashion way called hard work. I worked as short order cook, as a waiter, Bartender, I delivered telegrams in New York City and I sold pots and pans house to house while I was learning the language at NYU at night. When I was able to put a few words together I registered at night in its engineering school to fulfill my life’s dream and become a Civil Engineer. While a student at NYU, I became a father of two wonderful children. A boy and a girl. Times were tough Mr. President. My allowance was $5 a week. That was all Mr. President. The rest $100 to $150 went to support the family. But the hard work and sacrifice paid off. In 1968 I graduated from NYU with a BS degree in Civil Engineering and in 1972 with a Masters in Civil Engineering from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. by that time I was employed by the largest Electric Utility in US and contributed in the design and construction of 8 coal fire plants and 2 Nuclear plans and advanced to middle management in the company.
In my mid forties, I decided to start my own construction business and I did Mr. President with the only capital I could scape up of $20,000. I worked Mr. President 14 to 18 hours a day seven days per week to build my business, and not to bore you with details, you would not understand anyway, I succeeded beyond my wildest dreams. I became relatively wealthy not because of government help, but through hard work, the meaning of which you will never know. I put both of my children through college and retired at the age of sixty. Oh yes I forgot to tell you one small detail. All the years I worked, day and night, to build my business I had the US and NY State governments as equal partners and paid them hundreds of thousands of dollars every year in taxes to be wasted in bail outs and Solyndras and the welfare state you love so much.
But I’m proud Mr. President that I built my business all by myself. Yes I did Mr. President all by myself. But the sad thing is Mr. President you will never understand a word I said.

    • crash43

Was any government money involved with the design and construction of those Nuclear or coal fired power plants?? Was the nuclear plant at Hanford which is all government money.

      • Markon

The government has no money but that which it takes from people. Then they pick and choose who to give it to (bundlers and union buddies who launder it and pass it back to the Democrat party). The government doesn’t build the plant. They hire people to do that and they prevent private industry from competing. Go back to school right now and slap the teachers who made you so enamored with socialism/statism and other forms of tyranny.

        • crash43

Dept of Energy gives out contracts for the work done…private industry competes for those Government contracts, the Government is involved one way or the other. The rest of your comment makes no sense…must be tea party talk.

      • Mel Barras

There is no government money, it is all confiscated from citizens.

      • Truth101

        What is government money?

        • Government money is the money the government takes from hardworking, productive, taxpaying citizens, without whom the government has no money.

      • George K. Paleos,PE

The only contribution government makes is to throw monkey wrenches in your way and make it harder for the private industry to do what it does best and that is, to create jobs and wealth. Obama will never understand that. Crash 43, I don’t know what government money is. Please take Markon’s advice and find your teachers and ask them to refund your money and give them a kick in the butt for creating a moron.

      • Vote

Where did government get it’s money?

Without enterprise the only asset government has is slavery.

      • George K. Paleos,PE

Thanks Gary. There are millions like me Gary. They are called real Americans. But, I thank America and its good and decent people that gave me the opportunity. I’ll be eternally grateful to America.

        • BlueVA

“But I thank America and its good and decent people that gave me the opportunity.” And that is what President Obama is talking about — SOMEONE helped you out somewhere along the way. From this American born and bred: you’re welcome.

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bunch of retards that cannot read seem to post on this site. The quote is taken completely out of context and does not mean what Ms. Palin seems to want you to believe it means. Stop drinking the kool-aid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • JP

“Retards”, zain? Here’s the exact quote…

Obama continued. “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

Would you like to put it into context for us?

      • Tom

Certqinly. The context: “If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business. you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.” Nice to see the kookocracy has their blinders on.

        • sodakhic

Pretty damn clear, If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Libs need to go back to school and find out what reading comprehension means.

          • ikahana

Read the quote again. Don’t try to paraphrase it. Read it. There is nothing in the actual quote one can say is untrue.

        • tom,
Did they get in there with you and put in the long hours and elbow grease along with hard
labor. Government has not money of it’s own, they get it from American’s. Hard working
American’s that build their own businesses and send in to the government taxes
on what they profit, taxes deducted from their employees, taxes on their take home pay.
If it wasn’t for the people of America and businesses the government would go bankrupt.
And because of the out of control spending they have gone bankrupt. They refuse to cut
some of their unnecessary spending. The greed that is going on in our government is
unbelievable. We need a changing of the guard in the white house in november and just
pray that there will be a huge change in congress and hope that Obama has not taken
us to the brink of no return.

      • I’ll put it into context for you. It’s really only a google search away, you could have just looked yourself:

“If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help…There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

“That” refers to the American system; when I first heard Obama’s original statement it didn’t even cross my mind that he could be referring to business owners not building their own business. To make that leap we needed the Romney campaign and the good ole’ right media to besmirch the President’s original point, which was a pretty good one (and pro-America one) I thought.

        • Gwen

To make that leap we needed the Romney campaign and the good ole’ right media to besmirch the President’s original point, which was a pretty good one (and pro-America one) I thought.<<<

Not to mention the Billionaires who want one of their own in the White House. How many people on here who can't wait to vote for Rmoney….why do you suppose that is?

          • Gwen,

I see your own democratic party has brain wash you to think that. You have no clue
where your job comes from if you are in the work force and where all other jobs
comes from. If you did not have the wealthy and the people in small businesses you
would not have a job Obama is killing the job force. And if he is allowed to go on there
are going to be alot of liberals that are going to be shock of the outcome.
You need to look up factcheck alot more and not just rely on Harry Reid and Nancy

        • crash43

MSMBC has a video of Rmoney almost saying the exact same thing in a speech…maybe you should watch more than Fox.

          • crash43,
MSNBC is the most liberal left wing media there is. I don’t listen to where they
only present one side and that is radical. Don’t think they ever factcheck just
put out their left wing view points.

      • Daniel

“SOMEBODY INVESTED IN THE ROAD AND BRIDGES. If you’ve got a business – you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

He meant the roads and bridges, not the business.

        More context if you want:
“If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.”

        • JP

Wow…. I didn’t know you could get drunk on Kool-Aid!

      • MotherBush

You left out all the words that came before that JP. Typical Fox News watching republican.

      • Jesse

        Here is what Obama said:
“Let me tell you something. There are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there. If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that.”

      • zjemptv

“If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.” Barack Obama

        • MotherBush

Thank you! Kinda takes on a different meaning in this context. If a conservative had made this statement and thrown in Blessings From God here and there the right would think this is the greatest statement they ever heard. Hypocrites each and everyone of you.

    • Let’s look at the context, shall we?

The President said this, regarding people’s perception of success: “I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something — there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.”

He went on to say: “If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

And so what is the “context” that magically makes his remarks better? The context I see is a President who believes that a person that accomplishes something, like a successful business person, has dumb luck, other people, and above all the government to thank for his success. These words convey a clear message: entrepreneurs don’t contribute anything unique.

Please tell me how that is not the context.

    • black mamba

You almost convinced me, zain, but you didn’t use quite enough exclamation marks.

    • Tina

Not taken out of context at all. Nice try. And why all the hate?
Excellent blog Bristol and God Bless to your family!

    • Sharon Lager

As usual when one does not have anything to say one resorts to name calling. I thought the left was was for the defenseless. My son has DS and your choice of words is offensive. He would never call you that name. Your so called “government help” is nothing more than government control with inferior products.

      • crash43

Rush can use that word though. He’s special!

So you’re telling me that you smelted the iron ore that you dug out of the hillside financed by someone’s money (at some point) using your bare hands belonging to someone who didn’t benefit from an education? Wow… impressive. How are you even reading this?

Anyways, as a business owner who identifies as being independent, I have to rely on various resources in order to ensure that my business continues to operate. I built my business structure from the ground up, but not without help of the American economic cycles. I didn’t build it alone. I, along with everyone else, has had help.

  • Context

The context of the quote is a little more complex than your interpretation.

    Here’s the full quote:

“If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges.”

“If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

I am sure that someone that’s uneducated could start a thriving business. However, without a government to build roads and provide law and order, it would be impossible to run a business. For example, if shipping lanes are not protected then cost to transport cargo would rise, which would make food and clothing too expensive to buy.

So, in context, I find it difficult to believe you would disagree with that concept. If so, I am curious for your reasoning.

  • Ken Lowder

Bristol, you’re wrong on this one. Obama’s words were taken out of context. Regardless, I think Elizabeth Warren said it best:

“”You built a factory out there? Good for you. But I want to be clear: you moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for; you hired workers the rest of us paid to educate; you were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for. You didn’t have to worry that marauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory, and hire someone to protect against this, because of the work the rest of us did.”

The government has a huge hand in how businesses operate and how they’re able to be put together. Denying that is just ignorance.

    • Gwen

Comment. Of. The. Day, Ken Lowder!

    • sodakhic

You are quoting the whitest minority Indian i’ve ever seen, so she could use the government to get in to college and then used minority status to teach. What a hypocrit and liar. I wouldn’t trust her with a ten foot totem pole.

    • Joyce

No, they were not taken out of context. Marxists do not believe in private industry. So his comments were completely consistent with his failing Marxist ideology. He’s a failure and he will be gone in January…thank God.

  • Rick Marron

First, I paid for my own college education from 1972 to 1977. There were times that I worked over 60 hours aweek while full time in college. Because my father was an architect the only help I receivede was a Pheaa loan for 1700’00, which I paid off immediately. The more government gets involved in higher education, the more the costs just go up.

In 1977 I started my own business with a partner. We both worked minimum wage jobs at the time, most of our money went to building a church we were involved with. Our first vehical cost 100 dollars, it was a Vista Cruise station wagon. We had that car for years before we could buy our first used van! After our first year in business we had a good laugh when we realized we made less than minimum wage. It was still worth it, as we controlled our own destiny. We learned fairly fast that if we got too busy we could charge more and if we had no work we could charge less.

What has the government done for me? Absolutely nothing! Oh, I take that back, it was not for me rather to me! Where do you start? Maybe the thousands and thousands of dollars paid to cover unemploment. Funny, I am not even sure if over all the years we ever had anyone on unemployment! How about the time we worked on a hotel for a contractor, we were to receive a payment for the progress work we had just finished in the range of 20,000 dollars. To this day I never did get that check, what happened is the IRS froze this man’s accounts and took my money for something totally unrelated. In today’s dollars that check would have been over 100,000 dollars. I don’t have the time to tell of all the struggles I have had over the years, but this I will say, I have never been more insulted by our presidents comments.

Today I have more work than I can handle. I would love to hire employees again, but where is my incentive? I just don’t think it is worth the hassle. I am tired of having to babysit others and not get paid! Why do employers have to collect all the wage taxes for the government, it is not like the government pays us to do it for them! Why ? Are people not responsible enough to pay their own taxes? Maybe the government doesn’t want them to feel the pain of paying all those taxes!

By the way, Exactly where did the governments money come from to build all those bridges and highways? That’s right, it came from the hard working Americans who actually produce something! The goverment only produces things ( regulations, burdensome taxes, laws, etc ) that slow done the real production. Every government employee, people on wellfare, food stamp users etc are paid for by the hard working people of America. The end result will always be seen by the prices on the store shelves! It is time to get rid of this burden and lighten the load of government. Let’s all celebrate the success of others, after all they are the ones paying the bills!

    • MotherBush

Rick the owner of the company I workefor is celebrating his success just fine by purchasing a 20 million dollar yacht last year while telling his employees that we didn’t earn enough for bonuses this year. Here’s to him.

      • 007SAYWHAT

The magic words were you had a job last year. He owes you nothing. You work for him. If you are that jealous quit. On your next job App. but reason for leaving resentful of owners yacht without a bonus!!! I consider you a very fortunate ungrateful hard working person.

    • Linda

suck it up Rick. poor you! you think you’re the only hard-working person out there? or do you just think the only hard working folks out there are right wingers such as yourself. i’m a liberal democrat. my story is very much like yours in that i worked hard, put myself through college and law school, and now i make a decent living. somehow that experience did not make me bitter and parsimonious like you, thank god! despite all my hard work, i did have help from other people along the way and i have the intelligence and insight to acknowledge that fact. call me a socialist if you want, but i believe that all of us who succeeded have a responsibility to help those who continue to struggle in whatever way we can rather than resting on our laurels and proclaiming how great we are and what total deadbeats those who did not “succeed” are.

      • linda,
Just because you had help does not mean other had help or even ask for help. The people
of America have pride and many want to take on the challenge and do it on their own.
And just because people don’t succeed does not mean they are deadbeats. Deadbeats
        usually don’t even try!!!!

    • sodakhic

      Rick, Comment of the day!!!!!!

  • Thomas Hubbard

The Lord is my Helper, and I know that Todd has also seeked his Help. He has been the Palins strength and shield against those nasty attacks upon them, those firey darts that are thrown at them. I myself must also rely on him.

  • Tom

Someone should tell this pathetic little know-nothing that taking comments out of context will come back and bite you big-time. Everyone but the tea drunks know he was talking about things like infrastructure (roads, public transportation, public school systems), which are paid for by the public. Businesses could not succeed without such community involvement (also known by tea drunks as “socialism”).

  • Thank you, Bristol. We need more people like you doing this. I appreciate it.

My company, Financial Bin, focuses on personal finance and entrepreneurial education for Gen Y. I started the company in 2010 after I paid off my student loans. I wanted to help educate and network with other people that were in the same boat. Maybe we could exchange ideas and learn from each other — that was my motivation.

In November 2011, Financial Bin released its first book, Entrepreneur Intervention, which gives 28 accounts of entrepreneurs and small business owners who talk about the ups and downs they faced while starting and growing their companies.

Last month, Financial Bin released another book, Landlord Intervention, written by a 25+ year veteran landlord. The gentleman who wrote it is actually my father-in-law and he gives a great “how-to” guide for would-be landlords out there. And I know the government hindered him plenty in his landlord business, but it certainly hasn’t helped.

At FinancialBin.com (our main site), we provide articles on Budgeting, Wealth, Real Estate, Entrepreneurship and Education. We even created our own weekly Internet TV show on Google+ Hangout called Market Matters to cover what happens in the market and economy. I have interviewed the authors, financial experts, a former Major League Baseball pitcher, successful entrepreneurs, and professors on my podcasts.

We have plans for large projects as well in the coming months too.

Did I do all of this on my own? I will be the first to tell you no — heck no. The books wouldn’t be there without the individuals providing the content. While I formatted the books and edited each word, I will be the first to admit I didn’t do it by myself.

That said, I did have to create the business in the first place. Entrepreneurs are the ONLY way we get out of this mess. Free markets, capitalism, rewarding individual achievement — that’s how we get this train moving again. I know I can be successful anywhere. I just want it to be in America. It’s getting harder by the day.

Maybe the answer is we do it ourselves and forget about D.C. Might be the only way.

    Thanks again, Bristol.

you are taking everthing he said out of context.I listened to his speach he said you had some help some where in doing whatever. Surely you cant be that stupid

In Canada we suffered from a similar form of flotsam as leadership with Pierre Trudeau, although Trudea was considerably brighter than Obama; Trudeau has long been gone, but we’re still paying for his policies.

The mewing of Obama supporters that his remarks have been taken out of context is quite amusing, it’s very clear what he both said & meant. Unfortunately Obama as Presideny has turned out to be much as I predicted, that he would make such remarks, & believe them, should come as no surprise. I wish the U.S. better luck in selecting a President this November.

A good piece in the Chicago Tribune reflecting on Obama’s comments – http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/columnists/ct-met-kass-0718-20120718,0,2313230.column

Many small businesses are started with small Business Administration (SBA) money and would never make it without the government loan. Are the tea drunks opposed to SBA too?

    • Karen Edwards

@Tom, and many small businesses do NOT take money from the government and do it alone by pinching pennies and saving and investing in themselves. I am building my own business and can’t tell you how many hours a week I put in working hard but I have no regrets because I have the satisfaction of knowing I’m contributing to my country, my family and providing employment to others. No, Mr. Obama – I’m not building a business with the help of government, I’m building a business IN SPITE of the government.

    • JP

@Tom… yes, many businesses HAVE been started with Government backed SBA loans and many have not. Those that were fortunate enough to aquire an SBA Administration loan paid those loans back WITH INTEREST. The risk was STILL on the Small Business Owner.

  • I’m in tears! My father had a 6th grade education and went to work in the 30s when the Depression was at its worst. He served in the Navy in Guam, came home, went to night school and learned to repair radios and televisions. He started his own business in the 60s and worked 6 days a week, alongside my mother and other family members for the next 30 years. I salute these hardworking men and women and pray God’s blessings on them all and on our country.

  • Steve Wilson

I’m retired now but I went to work at 8 !/2 with my first paper route. I wasn’t allow to do this till 9. I begged my way to the job. soon i had 4 routes. I worked hard and everywhere I turned some rule got in my way but I preservered. I worked hard, was enterprising. started a candle business at 12. I am a retired New Car Franchised Dealer. I worked hard and made sure I paid well hired the best. I fought tooth and nail for every dime I have. I paid into S.S. and my company matched my contribution. I , not anyone else made a bad mistake in business and lost it all. Now even my S.S. is called an Entitlement, like it is some kind government dole. Please Mr. President. instead of for two years not giving me the COLA the law calls for, just give me a check for what I and My company put in with a little 3% compounded interest. I can go well with a couple million and I will not need you government “dole” which is nothing more than MY money anyway. S.S. had a huge reserve more than necessary to weather the baby boomers. My Government stole it and placed in the general found. Why don’t you get congress to return it to S.S. then it won’t need FIXING. Oh you can’t because you idea of government was to spend it. Small business and enterprise built this nation. Government now dose every thing it can do to destroy it. Your party and you Mr. President want a socialistic country. You think that is what we were founded on. Get a grip. YOUR FIRED !!

  • conanobrian

Dear Bristol, Until you can take care of your own child, do me a favor and stay out of politics. Your blog is nothing more than a branch office for your mother’s politics. Mitt Romney admitted that Obama was right and that government builds the roads and infrastructure that makes business possible. It’s a partnership between government and business. The Japanese would clean out your father’s fishing rounds if the government didn’t protect our shores. The Chinese would flood the market with low priced sea food without government inspection and tariffs. Every time you get in your truck and drive some place, the government built that road. You can’t fly anywhere without government air port traffic control. Your own brother is part of the government– as are the teachers in your family- Uncle and Grandfather Chuck. Your mother worked for the government as Mayor and as Governor. Government is not the enemy. Please, learn how to take care of Tripp before you start taking care of me.

    • Truth101

Do us a favor and get off this blog.

      • janel

        high five!

    • Nova

Government doesn’t build roads , contractors build roads. There’s even private roads.
The first railroads were private built. No forced tax.
A big government becomes the enemy. Every time. Just look at obamas project fast and furious , giving guns to Mexican drug mafia.

    • MelissaM

O’Brien – Do you have any genuine (as opposed to fabricated, sarcastic, attempt at funny) knowledge about Bristol Palin’s ability to take care of her son? Or could you even say you “genuinely” care? Additionally, I don’t see where her comments refer in any way to wanting to take care of you. She has asked for those who want to join with her in rejecting the ignorance of President Obama, to post their real-life, true stories. If you don’t have one because someone has given you what you have rather than you working to attain it…. then don’t comment. I agree that the government (using money derived through taxes paid by successful, innovative, hard-working citizens, like Todd Palin) provides the infra structure that is needed so the citizens of this country can lead their lives. Through taxes we pay for this government to serve the needs in areas where a pooling of funds in needed for all to succeed. The problem ……. the POTUS at this time in our history is so ignorant of how it works that he has elevated government to the position of provider rather than server. And angry, bitter, self-serving, insecure people such as you have latched on.

      • MotherBush

I think its pretty obvious from watching Bristol’s show that she can’t take care of her kid. BTW I hope that her brother Trigg doesn’t use any guvment money for any special needs education in his future. The palins should only provide for him in a completely private manner as should all parents with special needs children. Why should the tax payers help them? Eye for an eye right?

        • gma

People that only think about being a Democrat or a Republican, are people who can’t think for themselves. And any one who has no compassion for a family with a handicapped child is a jerk.

Trig is covered by Alaska Native Health Care…guess who provides that?

        • sodakhic

Hey Mother let’s go into Obamas old commuity in Chicago and see how those kids are raised Talk about disaster. Michelle Obama should be spending all her time in Chicago the war zone of America. Quit telling me what to eat and how my business sucks and go fix Chicago

    • T

Don’t be an idiot. What do you know about her child-rearing abilities? Typical liberal– throw in a personal attack rather than just make a logical argument. The government could not function without people to fund their activities. Where did the government get the money to build those roads and schools? (And who does the work? Usually it’s private contractors who do those jobs because they usually do the job faster and cheaper than any government agency would.) What money-making activity does the government perform other than tax the citizenry? Without businesses to employ people and pay wages you wouldn’t have any government. And while there may be quite a few government jobs, the government runs business very poorly- just look at the DMV: poor service and it’s going bankrupt. (Can’t wait to see what health-care administered by the DMV looks like– should be loads of fun). Government functions on the back of the people it supposedly takes care of. Wanting a bigger monkey on your back makes no sense.

      • crash43

She shows her child rearing abilities on her show and admits he’s a wild child..I hate you and F bombs come out of his mouth while Bristol and her sister laugh.

    • Nettie

Where do you think the government gets it’s money?? If not for taking it from the businesses and workers that pay taxes, the government would have nothing. The government doesn’t build anything unless they first take money from us. We would do a much better job at managing and building than the government, that has been proven.

    • MotherBush

That was perfect Conan! And what a great point…is government is so bad why was Bristol’s mother ever a part of it and why is she so DESPERATE to get back in it!

      • T

Sarah was part of it in order to get rid of the corruption that was rampant in Alaska- and she accomplished a lot before the Dems filed a ton of bogus complaints in an attempt to force her out of office and the public eye. What they didn’t count on was her ability to adapt to her circumstances and change the way she fights government corruption. She has a higher profile and influence now than she did then. Which is why trolls like you froth at the mouth ever time she, or her daughter, dares to contradict your point of view.

    • janel

Its pretty creepy you know this much about her in the first place for someone who doesn’t like her.

      • crash43

She’s on TV every week showing us her life..keep up.

    • AnyD

Just a word of advice conan, You should look around while your head is where it is. If you see any polyps you should chew them off. It could save your life.
Around the turn of the 19th century we had business owners who built their own roads, produced their own energy and built the homes of their workers. We now arrogantly call them Robber Barons.
You imply that because the government IS currently involved in every aspect of our lives that they then MUST BE involved in order for us to survive. That is simply not the case.
What you said about coastal waters is part of what the federal government is supposed to be involved in. Their place is in taking care of the common defense, interstate law and international commerce. That is the extent of their constitutional duty. Most of these things you sarcastically explained to Bristol are things that in which the Federal Government ought NOT to be involved in.
Bristol is doing fine with Trig. Her family is made of strong fiber. To imply that she can only take care of her child is just about the most sexist offensive thing I have ever heard uttered.
One way to look at the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution is this. The Declaration outlines what happens when overarching government gets too big. The Constitution is an attempt to create a government that is self limiting and has its strongest constraints on the size of the Federal Government.
Society needs government much less than government needs society. The economy doesn’t fail if the government were to end tomorrow. But the Government ends if the Economy ends tomorrow.
Whoever you are, you are simply an educated idiot. You have not the sense the average Alaskan is born with.

      • 007SAYWHAT

Dead on. The economy is what funds and preserves the governments existence. Thomas Jefferson would play the role Linda Blair did on the exeorcism and win the Academy Award just being himself if he returned tomorrow!!!

    • Pete

You’re perfectly correct, Conan – government is not the enemy. Overgoverning is the enemy. Specifically when what the president is really asking for here is for Americans to accept higher taxation with a big cheesy grin so the government can continue to redistribute the proceeds about as poorly as it is possible to imagine. Nobody, Republican, Democrat or Independent, denies that roads, tariffs, air traffic control and inspections — yes, and even a requisite number of politicians, God forgive us — are a reasonable use of tax dollars. So take your straw man and stick it, bro. How can you possibly justify this particular administration’s use of American tax dollars? Because THAT’s what we’re talking about, Mr. Comedian. Do YOU think it’s sensible to entrust them with even more? Bristol clearly doesn’t, and most people reading this don’t either.

      • MotherBush

I love how self righteous people like Pete are now that a democrat is in charge and trying to clean up the mess left to him by the previous REPUBLICAN. Pete were you think disgusted when the republicans and George Bush were spending money like drunken sailors? Be honest.

        • T

Blame Bush? Still? Will Obama ever own his own presidency? Will you ever expect him to? Or will he attempt to push his mistakes off on his successor after the fact? I’m betting he never takes responsibility for anything.

          • Kelgal

Yeah!!! We should expect President Obama to magically wipe out all the expenses that 2 wars have and are costing us. It’s so great to see how George W. Bush stands up and takes responsibility for all the debt his policies left us with! USA, USA, USA!!!

          • T

You mean the wars that Obama was going to magically end with his apology tour? Didn’t he make promises of the kind- like closing Gitmo? And if you’re so worried about the debt I’m sure you’d only be too happy to see the healthcare bill abolished since that will only add to your tax burden– you know, since you’re so fiscally minded. What was the debt before Obama took office? And what is it now? He owns that increase whether he likes it or not.

    • James Ryan

I have never had a paved road. I pay property taxes,
If we what roads we have to pay for them and you have to get everyone on the block to agree. most housing developments build their own roads and most developments that need road work have to fix it there roads themselves or have every one in the community pay the county for roads after that the county will maintain them All we need the government for is defense and social security if you paid for it you Hollywood nuts only know what they see
the government builds hwy ways and county roads
Obrian Obama bothe need someone to wright what they say

      • 007SAYWHAT

Fine let the Govt. take my tax money and build a road or two. It would have been nice if he would have done it a little. Obama Why did you allow us to get 6 trillion in debt? What did you do with our money? How will we ever get out of debt thinks to you and your voting base? What will happen to the USA with 4 more years of this??? Why do they screw it off on what they do and try and get me to believe that what they do helps business? Somebody out there in Bloggerspace convince me how they think Govt does a better job to grow the economy than business. This administration makes terrible decisions repeatedly with our money. They think business success creates a division. DUH!! Got to give them that one. Shouldn’t the more capable, creative, hard working be rewarded. We can only get this economy back by getting conservatives in all branches of govt. After not having a budget for over 3 years, especially at such a critical time along with 6 trillion shot to where ever, should make you realize we can’t do this 4 more years. It’s not like we haven’t been subjected to failures at every turn in the last 4 years with this wrecking crew.

    • conan obrian,
I think Bristol is doing a excellent job at both. Raising her son and politics. She has as much
rights as anyone else to do and say what she wants and how she feels. Evidently you don’t believe
everyone is in title to freedom of speech.

      • Linda

her kid is a brat and she shows the entire country that fact on TV every week. she has NO (ZERO) parenting skills, which is not all that surprising, given her age. i am not sure exactly how that topic is relevant to the current discussion, but, please do not deny what the entire country can see for themselves. had my two children acted like Tripp, at any point in their lives, i’d have been embarrassed to death and i cannot imagine why she wants to broadcast this to the world. right there an TV are Levi’s grounds for filing for sole custody.

    • 007SAYWHAT

I just wish the balance on the govt side had a clue to how much they are destroying the business side.

I think Bristol is doing a fine job with her family and her life. She has the means to set up a web site to try and get people who have their head in the sand some wisdom. If you want to be more vocal to telling her about her site why not set 1 up yourself. I think you will find it a challenge you are not prepared to manage. It’s sort of like Obama finding that being President interferes with his basketball and golf. I think he still finds time to hang out with his radical USA hate monger friends because he brought them to D.C. and made them his closest advisers. I only wish he, Micheal and them would had been subjected to a security clearance. Believe me, I am totally confident that Bristol could pass a security clearance . My new found PATRIOT FRIEND go to you tube, pull up Micheal Obama saying all this for a damn flag. My advice to her while being political correct would be to suggest she keep her mouth shut at a formal ceremony respecting the fallen. Please get back to when you get that web site up. I can’t wait to contribute. I will keep it real for you!!!!!

  • Brett

The only initiative the goverment ever seems to want to encourage is signing up for another goverment handout. I live in an area with higher than average poverty & unemployment and the primary radio advertising locally is for enrollment in federal, state, and local programs. The only ones of which I could support, would be training & that would only be if those trained actually got jobs in a large enough % to deem successful. If the cost per job is too eccessive than it should be improved or defunded. People also need to be willing to relocate to where the jobs exist. I’m the only one in my immediate family to go to college & I’m doing well, but I was also raised to know the value of hard work. I worked on a farm in high school & once worked 100 hours in one week. I bought an Apple II with my own money at 16 ($2500). I work for a 2nd generation manufacturing company. The founder built it & his sons have continued it! And yes, Mr. President, there are a lot of people out there that work hard, but you make it harder for them and encourage the ones that don’t!

    Awesome – More please!

  • nancy wolfgang

This president never wanted when he was child; he is unable to disclose his authentic birth certificate; he is unable to release his college records; he never held down a real job; this person does not know how to relate to commoners…..except when it comes to the Chicago Political Machine.

  • Karen

I see some of the comments that are really hateful.
they don”t see that the government did all those wonderful things
    with our tax dollars

    • Karen,
Like special interest and pork barrell spending. Speaking about the infrastructure and the roads
that take us to our jobs. Our infrastructure is a disgrace and the monies that have b een allocated
to rebuild them, there has been very little to go toward that. Obama has put billions toward green
energy and they are going bankrupt. So tell me about all those wonderful things that Obama and
the Government has done with our tax dollars. Everyday that goes by we hear where they have
tagged us with more taxes to bale them out. No budget in 3 and 1/2 years.

  • David Schirmer

Good on you Bristol! I ran salmon tenders for years up there and bought millions of pounds of set net fish and drift fish. I worked the Naknek/Kvichak, Egegik, and Ugashik rivers mostly but did get over to Clark’s Pt. for the early Nushagak King run back in the nineties. The thing that impressed me most about set netters was how gruelling the physical work could be. I think that is something that is sorely lacking in Washington D.C. today. So many of our leaders haven’t put in a few weeks of gut busting, deep breathing, muscle fatiguing physical labor ever. My dad always kept projects that we could do as a family. Building a Summer home, my parent’s retirement home, major landscape projects at a couple of different childhood homes, etc. Obama has once again revealed himself because there was no teleprompter. I can tell you that there are a lot of moderates and liberals that own businesses and they are not pleased with his comments! A friend of your family- Mark Niver, can vouch for my fish experience. Take care, God Bless you for all that you are doing.

This is a GREAT idea, Bristol!!! That’s what makes America great!

  • Dee Hamby

Aren’t you all proud of yourselves, you have attacked a young lady whose only problem is that her Mother is an Awesome American who loves this Country. What do you folks do but get on this and shove your thoughts around. Try something productive, like fishing, like trying different jobs that come your way and for once in your life PRIDE IN YOUR COUNTRY THAT MAKES YOU ACT LESS A JERK!

  • Isaac

Even with the full context, Obama is still so WRONG:

    * A great teacher taught you something at some point in your life? Well, Mr Obama, that teacher taught the same thing to a lot of people.
    * Got a grant? Lot of people get grants.
    * Somebody else invented a highway? Lot of people transit by them

But not the whole lot of people became successful. A lot of morons transit through highways, and losers also got in the classroom with the great teacher. The difference is in the individual always! Not the help, not the teacher, and not certainly highways etc etc. You see, I didn’t invent the alphabet, but these letters are not getting together by themselves, I built also this comment, just as I built my successful career.

    • Steven

That is THE SINGLEMOST AWESOME comment or reply I have EVER seen!!! Lmao! Freaken awesome

    • Emma Lora

Great post Bristol, over 300 comments in one day! Most are inspiring stories of independent, hard working people. A community of small businesses working together with their own sweat and perserverance is the fiber of America.

A few of the same liberals that troll each blog, are cheerleaders of BHO and the liberal way. They make an attempt to present their support of BHO with little substance and a lot of hot air. In the midst of strong, hardworking American stories, the liberal diatribe is easy to spot and easy to pass over. Their flailing, gasping rhetoric is a weak, desparate act to attack the fiber of America.

      • AkaDad

Saying Liberals are destroying the fabric of the country is the type of rhetoric that divides the country. Why not discuss the issues without getting personal?

People rightfully complain about the debt then blame it on Liberals. Well, if Liberals had been in charge over the last 30 years we wouldn’t have had all the tax cuts for the top brackets, we wouldn’t have deregulated the financial industry, which caused the recession. We wouldn’t have invaded Iraq. We would have Medicare for all, so businesses wouldn’t have to waste their time and money on health care.

In other words we wouldn’t have all this debt.

  • AkaDad

Obama is correct. Without workers most businesses would be out of business.

    • Keith B.

That is correct, however, did the employees come first or the business? Can employees just show up somewhere with nothing to do and be needed?

      • AkaDad

The point he was making is that we’re all in this together.

        • MotherBush

          Exactly AkaDad.

        • Steven

Yep. Which is why we need Him out of the equation cuz I don’t wanna be in anything he has his cursed hands or ideas on

        • sodakhic

The you pay my taxes , friend.

        • Marty

So why does Obama work so hard to tear us apart?

          • AkaDad

What has Obama done to “tear us apart?”

        • Karen Edwards

Sorry AkaDad and MotherBush…you are both wrong….we are not “all in this together”…if that were true, then the government and tax payers would also be footing the bill for every business that doesn’t make it…no, when a business fails, the small business owner has sole financial responsibility for that financial loss, he is not bailed out by the government and tax payers….therefore, since the risk is his, the success is also his and his alone.

          • AkaDad

If your business fails and you lose everything we have bankruptcy laws and other safety nets to bail you out, so actually you’re wrong.

        • blackbird

No not all, you mean all hard working law abiding citizens. When Obama talks about wealth redistribution and we’re all in this together he sees your wealth as stolen and he will correct this injustice by taking it away and giving it first to his friends.

The ‘we’re all in this together’ statement by the President is meant to divide you and appease his base.

          • AkaDad

How is “We’re all in this together” divisive? I thought we were the “United” States.

        • MERowan

Hey AkaDad, How many employees have offered you a job or paid your wages and benefits? Unfortunately labor, whether skilled or unskilled, is a commodity. Without the business the labor produces nothing. Good news though, here in America, at least for now, you can change your situation and decide to go for it on your own. become an entrepreneur, your own boss. It will take some investment, risk, and a ton of hard work, long hours and no paid vacations for a while, but if you REALLY want it you can get there. I wish you well.

          • AkaDad

And without labor the business produces nothing. It’s a mutual relationship, because we’re all in this together.

      • Stephen

Only in Obama’s world and it’s called the wellfare line.

        • AkaDad

I’m pretty sure we had welfare before Obama. What would happen if the millions of people who can’t get a job (because the free market fails to provide jobs for everyone) didn’t have welfare? It wouldn’t be pretty.

  • Keith B.

I am a business owner and take Obama’s comment as an insult to intelligence. His slogan should be “backward” because that is exactly what it is. There would be no need for roads, the internet, etc. without business paying taxes directly and indirectly through its employees earnings. He would know that if he owned or ran a business. Without the creation of goods and services there would be no need for the infrastructure he so glibly ascribes to a benevalent government. Where does he think the money comes from ? Trees??

    • tony Antwan

You are 100% right….. Mr. president is a socialist and he is markscest !!!!! he think himself like robin hood ! take from the rich and give it to the poor !!!!

  • Stan

‘First they came for the business owners…..’

Obama needs to convince his greedy socialist supporters that they are the ones who deserve the credit for any business successes so they won’t feel guilty when he robs those businesses to buy more votes.

  • conservativemama

Wow people! I’m in awe of what my fellow Americans have built. There are roads and bridges and teachers all over the world, but freedom is what brings greatness.

  • My daughter BUILT UP a children’s clothing and toy store in Greenville, NC over 3 years of blood, sweat and tears. A going concern. Obama TORE IT DOWN.

    • AkaDad

So Obama personally showed up with a wrecking ball?

      • crash43

Akdad, the way these people think is what’s wrong with America, everyone of them is in it for themselves. All you have to do is read their comments mememememe.

  • Roseberry

If Mr Obama really wanted to say nothing more than “We’re all in this together.” he could have done so. It is both a truth and a platitude. But it seems that he was actually trying to say more than that. That unless we bow to the demands of contemporary teachers unions, we are somehow ignoring that contributions that some good teachers made to our formation. That unless we support every budget-breaking entitlement program and government boondoggle, we are failing to recognize the legitimate role of government to maintain peace and order, protect citizens from force and fraud. That unless we support every wasteful public works project and bridge to nowhere, we are somehow ignoring the responsibilities of government in maintaining a common infrastructure. The most charitable thing one can say about Mr Obama’s comment is “Thank you, Captain Obvious.”

    • AkaDad

I agree that Obama should have just said we’re all in this together. The problem I have is that people are trying to say that Obama is somehow anti-business, which doesn’t make sense considering under Obama we’ve had 18 tax cuts for small business. Also I’ve never heard anyone argue that we need all these wasteful boondoggles. It’s the politicians in both parties that deserve the blame for that.

The two biggest budget busters are health care and defense. If we went to a medicare for all system we could cut costs by a third and remove the burden of heath care from all businesses, which would make us more competitive in the global marketplace. If we stopped policing the world, we could cut costs in half and still easily defend the country.

      • GrizzlyMom

Great post AkaDad. Glad your hear…hope some of them listen to reason.

  • blackbird

This is a great post and Idea Bristol, way to go.

  • Maureen

The problem with Obama’s comments – while the government may have built roads or paid teachers the ONLY reason that they CAN do that is because people generated work and income that could be taxed which ALLOWS governments to build infrastructure that ALL people use!!!

Without that income, governments have NO resources to do anything!!!

It is worrisome that Obama really doesn’t seem to understand that!

  • Susan Williams

People get up early in the morning to “build” their dream. I don’t think the government or Obama get up early to do anything except whine!

I think the “that” Barack Obama is talking about is the education, roads and bridges. Like he said… If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build the education, roads, or bridges. Somebody else made the education, roads and bridges happen.

“I know that you recognize a lot of people help you in a business. Perhaps the banks, the investors, there’s no question your mom and dad, your schoolteachers, the people that provide roads, the fire, the police. A lot of people help.” Mitt Romney

Bristol you should write a post about how Mitt Romney feels the same way as Barack Obama.
Bristol and Sarah, please tell me you have figured out what Barack Obama was saying now that you have seen the whole quote.

    • crash43

Yep they both said the same thing but it doesn’t fit Palin’s agenda.

    • lloyd

It wasn’t just somebody that made the roads and bridges and education happen…it was businesses. It was taxes on business owners and the people that work for them. Do you really think that government just craps out roads and bridges? It’s business that pays for it. The government is just a lame broker between the people’s money and construction companies. Btw, people living off welfare have the same access to all the roads and bridges that business owners do. I’ve been paying taxes long enough that my generation paid for the roads I’m driving on.

      • Couldn’t of said it better myself!

        • tom stewart

couldn’t “have” said it better myself.

    • James

I thought he was the great communicator. Why does he require shills to explain his speeches? You can interpret “that” anyway you want but I’m just going to guess that most people won’t agree with your interpretation. Obama’s team should just put on the big boy pants, this is politics after all right Debbie?

    • Marie

Obama said, “Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. . .” That’s right, somebody did – WE THE PEOPLE DID, with OUR tax dollars, WE built this unbelievable American system. WE invested in the roads and bridges, WE pay the firemen and teachers, and we share them with everyone else whether they pay any taxes or not. So don’t say that we small business owners “. . . didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.” Because that somebody else was US and WE made it happen with OUR TAXES.

      • Nicely said, but you forgot to mention that a lot of men and woman paid for our freedom to build and create with their lives!

        • Truth101

It all comes back to taxes because Obama would not be able to run his Big mouth if not for taxes.

Obama is one big mistake on America and that mistake will be voted out of office in a little over 3 months. What we have to hope and pray for is that this mistake won’t do any more harm to our Great Country through executive order until Romney takes office in January. What he can’t get through congress or the courts the Big Mistake is doing with ink.

      • Floyd scarberry

        • GrizzlyMom

hey Floyd why doesn’t the “good Lord” go help some of the impoverished 3rd world countries build their land into a great country. Doesn’t he love those people? Didn’t he make those people? Is God America First?

    • Becky

The actual quote starts earlier in the speech. The quote you and the Obama campaign are now advertising came after when he must have thought, “uh-oh, I went too far that time.” so then he brings in the teachers and roads comment. The horse is out of the barn…way too many people riled up now.

    • Tina

The fact is, education, roads, etc… is the common denominator we all enjoy and pay for with our taxes. The person who builds a business does so of his own initiative, takes the risk, has the talent and the perseverance, often despite roadblocks put up by the government.

Nice try. But your spin doesn’t work.

And this isn’t about Romney or the Palins. It’s about Obama’s ideology with is at odds with most of the American people.

    • Tom

What Mitt Romney did NOT say is “You didn’t build that” as Obama did, nor did he insinuate any of this “it takes a village” mentality. Besides, does it not make sense that people who started businesses paid taxes for infrastructure too? Guess what else, Nigeria has roads and bridges, so do other third-world countries. How are they doing?

It’s not the infrastructure that causes success, it’s the opportunity with thanks not to people paying taxes through the nose (Obama calls it “fair share”) thanks to the genius of the founding fathers who embraced capitalism in the first place.

    • Eric Pierce

Government provides NOTHING without the taxes generated by private enterprise. Only liberals take credit for stuff they didn’t do…

      • GrizzlyMom

Liberals run private enterprise and pay taxes Eric.

    • Clay

His quote could be taken to mean he only meant the infrastructure that helps business and without it, they couldn’t. But that’s not the whole quote. In context, he set it up by saying, outright; people do not build their own business by smarts and hard work. It’s his Marxist worldview coming out.

  • Kym Owen

    Totally agree

  • JimLane
  • conanobrian

I’m guessing that Bristol still can’t explain the last two episodes of her show.

And I’m guessing that YOU think your belly-button lint is magical cotton candy left to you by the La-La Land pixies.

    • GrizzlyMom

Of course she can’t conan! But remember Bristol Built IT! With her own two hands! She wrote the script, she made the cameras and sewed the costumes. She taught all the people on her crew their jobs. She created a broadcast network and used her genius in science to discover special airways on which to broadcast the show to her fans. She had ZERO help from anyone else (especially that evil 3rd party known as the “GOVERNMENT!” She would never take anything from them because they are bad and are trying to force her to get gay married and have abortions (of course this is after they take ALL of her money and destroy her God).

  • What business is it of obama if somebody helped me & my husband when we built our business? We paid our taxes! All of them; Federal tax, state tax, city tax and not just in one city mind you, sin tax, property tax both on our home and business! Not to mention the insurance for all our vehicles, registration’s on all our vehicles (not cheap), employees insurance, overtime, paid holidays, paid sick leave, Christmas bonuses, warehouse insurance. And we paid for licenses; State lic, more then 2 different city licenses, and other license that you would never begin to understand if you never owned a small business. And we had to buy products and machinary on a regular bases. We paid commissions to our clients. With all that we were considered middle class ranging in the gross of $250,000.00 income. Believe me, that is not rich! We worked our butts off all year long! We didn’t get paid vactions! We didn’t get overtime or paid holidays as a matter a fact we worked many holidays, when we were sick the loss was ours. We paid for our right to use the highways and what ever other services that are provided through our taxes that we paid. We took the risks, if we lost our business, we would of took the loss, there was nobody else standing next to us when we were on the verge of losing everything. As far as the teachers go don’t even bother, I dropped out of high school because I was struggling and nobody was there to help me. My son graduated because of me, I was the one there making sure that he could do his math, read and write etc… I knew better then to trust the school and he did graduate. Banks? They don’t help, their just as much a business as we were. When we borrowed money, we paid interest on every single loan. And if we couldn’t pay them, they would be knocking on our door to confiscate what ever they could. AAAND we help people out as well! So I don’t appreciate you or obama preaching at me that we didn’t build our own business! At times it was a heavy load to carry and there was nobody standing next to us to catch us if we fell. That statement obama made angers me to no end!!! You don’t know what we have been through, we managed but it wasn’t anybody else’s doing, it was our shear will to succeed and by the grace of God! The only one I will give credit away to is God, He can have all the glory! And I thank Him regularly for the blessings that I am blessed with today!!!

You are following a Palin. Nothing smart about that or them.

  • tom stewart

Does any body believe Bristol “GED” Palin is writing this?

  • Mike Parkin

Well Mr President you would NOT be the President of the USA if it were not for the people of the USA who MADE you!!!!!!!!

    • BlueVA

So President Obama isn’t anything without others, but all you Republicans are somebody without anybody’s help. You all can’t even see how you’re arguing in giant circles.

      • GrizzlyMom

Amen Blue! They are losing this argument so badly and they don’t even know it.

  • Richard_FL

Nothing more than Obama expressing his socialist views of collectivism, where we are all in this together and we all work for the “common good.” Nothing to do with the individuals sovereignty or freedom. Just more of his “one world order” BS.

It seems of late that Obama has been spending too much time around Biden…….you know, open your mouth and something stupid dribbles out.

But this is merely a reflection of who Obama is and his views of society, the same view that brings Hillary Clinton to “it takes a village” nonsense.

Praying for a rejection of this at the ballot box in November and send this clown and his mini-car of misfits packing. Let them promote this surrender of individual freedoms on the world stage……..we have had all we care to hear in the good ole US of A.

Yes, he is right, he and his ilk have done NOTHING to promote this country, only to tear it down.

Good ridence Mr. President………..and you do not speak for me or many millions of others in this country that did make a difference and did build something out of nothing. We know a majority of your followers haven’t and are all about living of the sweat of others………..so take a hike, Mr. President.

  • Allison

Todd Palin built up his bank account by pimping out a young, single mother of two disabled children. Thank God our tax dollars aren’t part of that disgusting story. Todd built that business himself. This isn’t going to get past the censors, but for YOU dear censor, I dare you to get a copy of “Boys Will Be Boys” and open yourself up to the TRUTH that you claim to treasure in your oh-so-Christian heart. Good luck handling this truth. Good luck.

    • Susan

there is a saying “Hurt people hurt people”

      Dear Allison,
I pray for you that you may seek the love of Jesus to full your hurtful heart. I, too, was once hurtful like you then I was saved by the grace of Lord who showed me a better way. God’s Truth is perfect and heals all wounded and if you seek his Word then you to will be saved.
With love in the full spirit of God.

      • GrizzlyMom

Susan why don’t you ever post that you are praying for all the nasty people on here that disparage liberals and our President? Based on your logic they are hurting also and just because you happen to agree with their opinions doesn’t make their comments any less “hurtful”.

        • Susan

I am praying for you. I noted your multiple comments-your multiple commenting has reached the point of obsession-expressing a deep hurt.
May I suggest-for your benefit- that you quitely step away, never to return and find something else to focus upon. At this time you are trapped in your obsession and this is not good for your heart or your mind or your soul.
          Many blessings to you

          • GrizzlyMom

I could say the same thing to you Susan. Perhaps a nice walk outside or a good book would do the trick. And of course there’s always medication but clearly you are already on some.

    • Emma Lora

In this conservative arena, the liberal posters display a needy validation of their liberal opinions… or the “fix” of an assumed but delusional debate win. . Their desparation and frustration shows in their unconvincing, puppet- rhetoric & their verbal “high fives” among one another. There are many other agreeable sites that will validate them, & celebrate their stance , but why go there if a “fix” is needed. They will continue to be desparate and frustrated while grasping on to their puppet-like liberal positions on a basically conservative site, clamoring desparately for a “fix” among themselves

      • BlueVA

        • GrizzlyMom

Hey Blue wake me up if Emma ever changes the record 🙂

          • GrizzlyMom

And for Christ’s sake Emma its despErate not despArate.

          • emma Lora

ooh Grizz, you found a flaw. It really bothered you didn’t it? Yes my record does sound the same. I’m responding to same-o same-o puppet-talk and puppets on a string attitude.

          • GrizzlyMom

oh Emma I found many flaws in you but the misspelling of a simple word got old after you made it countless times. Aren’t you above responding to my posts by now? I mean you are Bristol’s #1 Fan and all that. I bet you dream about you and her going to the movies together and having an ice cream afterwards. Maybe you can see Undefeated again! I’m sure you have memorized practically every line.

          • emma Lora

I rest my case. read your post again!! lol You can choose to not be bothered by choosing not to read my “flawed” posts. It will be no loss for me. I have children older than her, silly.
Get along and get your fix from your co-puppets. Take a deep breath and try to have a nice day.

  • BlueVA

Bristol, I’d like to thank you for presenting your opposing opinion respectfully, by calling President Obama “Mr. President.” All presidents deserve the respect afforded by their elected position. Second, I’d like to thank you for writing this post. As I read the angry comments, I’m literally thanking G-d that my heart is open to the struggles of my fellow countrymen. I’m glad that He puts it on my heart to contribute to my local food bank. I’m glad that He puts it on my heart to think better of the needy than you and your fans do, who think that using food stamps always equates to laziness, who think that using welfare always means embracing sloth and inviting ridicule. I hope for the sake of all you here, who despise President Obama and are so sure that you had NO help ever in your life — I hope that not one of you falls on hard times. From the bottom of my heart, I pray that G-d continues to bless every single one of you, as he clearly has, since you have so little knowledge of what it means to struggle that you can judge those who do.

    • GrizzlyMom

Nicely said Blue 🙂 Hope some of it sinks in to the ones how post here.

  • ytacy

    Just a nother dumb palin

  • Can we get some appreciation in this discussion of (1) how the president’s words are being taken out of context by his opponents, (2) how conservatives who are discussing the entirety of what he said agree with him, and (3) that it is a Biblical teaching that we are interdependent, and many of those who are critical of what they think the president said are engaging in a form of arrogant boasting of individual, allegedly unassisted accomplishment that is antithetical to much of what the Bible says?

I’ve shared some more detailed thoughts and examples on my own blog here at Patheos, for those who may be interested: http://www.patheos.com/blogs/exploringourmatrix/2012/07/the-bible-barack-obama-and-american-business.html

  • jane

sheesh – if this was my blog I’d have the banhammer out on some of the hateful posters here. Only Lefties think it’s ok to go into someone else’s house(blog) and personally insult them. BHLs have the manners of children raised in the woods by rabid dogs.

    • MotherBush

Yes but then Jane you couldn’t whine about all the meanies saying mean things about you and generate lots of sympathy which for the palins translates into $$$$$$$

    Gordon Ramsay For President

Ya know, the service and what they are feeding us these days really stinks

I really don’t watch TV news anymore; I’m afraid I no longer find listening to twisted truths and lies to be very informative. I ‘m also not into sexual deviance, murders, dysfunctional families or God and Christian bashing either. So I really don’t watch very much TV at all these days.

Now some might think this leaves me at a disadvantage when it comes to picking the best person to vote for, when it comes to choosing our next president. However, one of the few shows on TV that I do find to be worth watching and helpful in deciding my choice is Kitchen Nightmares, starring Gordon Ramsay.

It is one of the best shows on TV and it explains, and actually demonstrates, how and why our country is going out of business and what has to be done if we wish to save it.

On the show, the root of the problem always lies with the owners of the business. If applied to our country, the owners would be us, the American People.

You see, somewhere along the line the owners lost their passion to see their once successful business continue to succeed and grow. At some point, they’ve turned the decision making operation and management of the business over to their “employees.” In our business, that would be the president, congress and federal employees. (Who, by the way, can even grab your granny’s crotch these days, if that’s what they feel like doing.)

Anyway…The show starts with Gordon reviewing the general appearance of the business by himself. After that, the first thing he does is to meet with the actual owners to determine the current financial condition of their business and the owner’s actual commitment to the success of the enterprise.

In every instance, the owners’ report that they are going broke due to the loss of revenues and almost all of their patrons, plus the inability to attract new patrons.

Next, he orders a few items from the menu to determine the timeliness of the service and quality of the products being offered. That always turns out to be slow service and exceptionally horrible product. (just like dealing with our present government)

Next, he observes the people who are supposedly working for the business… A manager (professional politician) who is not managing, just collecting his check and bellowing a lot) and a fed up disgusted service and cooking staff, some of who are actually good workers, who have be driven to no longer care about the business. (government employees). The result; employees doing what ever they feel like doing, when ever they feel doing it.

Next, he inspects the kitchen and raw material storage area… Neglect, filth and rot galore. Afterwards, he immediately orders a total clean out scrub down.

Last but not least, he reviews the size of the lengthy menu and the offerings on it, only to find out that they are offering everything from pizza to chow mien; Beef Wellington, and even tire and oil changes. (just like the amount of products our government offers and can’t really produce with any quality)

Finally, Gordon goes to work. First, he inspires the owners to take charge of their business and employees, and to be responsible for the products they are producing and serving. Next he changes the décor and theme of the business to fit the local community and produces a smaller focused menu that the kitchen staff can manage and take pride in. After that, he inspires the kitchen and service staff to communicate with each other and take pride in their individual responsilbiies and the business itself. Those who are not interested in partaking in the success of the business and who prefer to continue doing things the old way (like our incumbents) quickly become history.

The show always ends with a very successful, although a little bumpy, reopening and Gordon riding off into the sunset. (Kind of like George Washington and Cincinnatus).

Now, I don’t think Gordon is interested in running for president, even if we were to get him one of those Hawaiian birth certificates. Then again, I’m afraid even if he did decide to run the media would quickly fill the airwaves with a few of those restaurants that he had tried to revitalize which ended up failing. You see Gordon never guarantees utilmate continued success, he only demonstrates to the owners that success is possible if one puts in the passion and effort.

Now one might say, “Well those are just restaurants, one person can’t change the direction of a corrupted failing government.” Well, if you take a look at what Chris Christy is doing in New Jersey, you’ll see that you could be wrong about that. However, if you want to a see a real case history of it working, watch The Undefeated…the REAL non fiction Sarah Palin story. You can get if from Netflix. You’ll be amazed what one honest decent person can do.

    • George K. Paleos,PE

Flying John, You did a great job with your allegory story. You drove the point home well.

  • theduchessofkitty

    Great job!

  • Thank you Bristol and Sarah, for being who you are…I for one am appalled every time I hear the bashing of the two of you as well as your whole family. Those who want to do that and attack your family have serious issues and they need to seek professional help for those issues…my opinion! I personally have family members who have built businesses from the ground up and I applaud those people who can do that. I have been trying to get my own business off the ground for a while, but unfortunately with little success. It doesn’t mean that I will quit or give up on my plan. I just need a different path to explore my options. I’m new at this so I’m sure that I have not been given sound advice when starting out. However I only heard clips of that speech that President Obama gave where he said that if you have a business you didn’t do it on your own you had help….well, frankly many of my family members who started their business didn’t have two dimes to rub together and they got NO help from anyone…they did it themselves. I have an Uncle now deceased that started a bait shop…from what I was told he would go and catch the bait himself keep it in buckets and sold them in different areas along the river in Kentucky. When guys would get there and either run out of bait or forgot to pick up any, they would go see my Uncle….that’s how he started his business, now his son owns that business and has maintained it, even though it was yanked out from under him not long after my Uncle passed away. My cousin vowed never to let the business die he scrimped and saved and built a new building and made it bigger than it was before. He has a booming business now, and is making a decent living. He had no help from anyone! Thanks Sarah and Bristol I enjoy reading about you and how things are going for you all, and I think you have a beautiful family, keep up the good work….sure would love to see you as President Sarah! 🙂

  • President Obama crossed his Rubicon. He can’t turn back. And the president CAN’T take back what he said. Defeat is now on his horizon. Seriously. Everyone knows that the business of America IS business — not government. No president gets away with telling U.S. business owners “you didn’t build it”. His arrogance is just another millstone around his neck that will take him down. If you still support Obama, you’re not paying attention. You may as well just back up the USS Obama and hit that iceberg again.

PS- President Obama must stop attacking American success. You know that the businesses featured in this video saved-or-created more jobs than any Obama program.

  • Ezekiel

The President was talking about infrastructure, like highways, , electricity, etc.

We all benefit from those things, that no one of us “built” on our own. Without that infrastructure, it’s very hard for businesses to get going. With it, they have a chance to use their own hard work to succeed.

    • Sharon

Correct but who’s money built the roads and infrastructure??? Our tax dollars so we did build the roads that lead to our business that we built on our own not government; they didn’t spend their nights worry about expenses etc.

      • GrizzlyMom

And who do we employ as government workers? Oh thats right US? We hire US! Americans…people we went to school with and live beside and shop at the grocery store with and go to concerts together.

        • Yea,, it goes back to “We The People” something Mr. Osama (oops, Obama) doesn`t Want to understand. We the people built this country and “They the scum of DC are tearing it down and giving it away.. I love my country but distrust that pkace called District of Columbia and most of its occupants. Most of them don`t have to work and never will.

        • Truth101

And who pays for those government workers? Our tax dollars.

      • Mary Buttry

I agree it is our hard earned tax dollars that put the people to work building that infrastructure!

    • Barb R

What the president MEANT and what he SAID are two very different things.

But on to your point. Is the president inferring that small business owners don’t pay taxes? They do, and plenty of them, therefore they DID build the infrastructure as well as building their own businesses.

Of course I don’t expect anyone who hasn’t had to meet a payroll to understand.

    • Steven

If government didn’t do it the businesses would have with their own money. Better cheaper and more efficiently. Government ALWAYS take its cut to pay for the wastefull overhead. Do you REALLY think that neighborhoods and businesses wouldn’t when profits await?

I bet yuo want the government to wipe you when you’re done also.

      • Susan

I agree. Here in NM a couple formerly government-operate entities such as DVM and waste-disposal are privatized and are today far more efficient and cost-effective; privatizing these two entities alone has reduced high taxation and created more private enterprise (ie jobs)

Many of the ‘government services’ would be far more effective, productive and less-costly if they were taken out of the public sector hands and put into private sector hands.

Plus, politicians would not be able to make all sorts of promises they cannot keep to government workers who unfortunately will have a very difficult financial future ahead; eventually the government sector will run out of other people’s money.

In honesty it is cruel how the government deceives their public sector workers as well as recipients of govenment assistance. As we see in cities like Scranton PA, when the government runs out of tax dollars the workers as well as receipients of government assistance stop receiving their checks. And during such time there is no recourse nor alternative; all the money was wasted away supporting a bloated government bureaucracy.

All government can create is bureaucracy, a massive bureaucracy which requires a great deal of finances to sustain its survival. And unfortunately all bureaucracy will feed itself first before any of the public sector workers are fed.

If it takes $3 for the government bureaucracy to do what the private sector can do for $1 then eventually government bureaucracy must consume everything in order to stay alive.

This is what public sector workers fail to understand, they work for a bureaucratic governmental system which is not benevolent, loving, kind or humane.

Government bureaucracy does not care about the public sector worker, the bureaucracy only cares about sustaining itself. It is tragic for those who have come to rely upon government, this is the false hope in a dream which never enters reality.

        • emma Lora

          Great post!!

    • Brian Z

The infrastructure was built by the taxes that are paid because businesses started up and created a product or service that people were willing to pay for. The government taxes the business and the employees that work for the businesses (the employees’ taxes wouldn’t exist without the business’s entreprenors taking risks and putting their life savings on the line). The government builds the infrastructure when the location of the business is established and the employees build their homes in the vicinity of their jobs. It is built to fill a need and paid for essentially because the business is successful.

    • Joyce

Actually, BRIAN….govt didn’t build anything! Private businesses built the roads and bridges…with OUR money. Government had little to do with it, other than appropriating OUR money and awarding the contracts to business people who built construction businesses. THEY built the roads and bridges. And the only reason we needed these roads, was to connect private businesses to their consumers and to other businesses. Govt does not built anything but DEBT. Get a clue, will you?

    • 56Survivor

Brian, get this straight. The “government” has no money of its own. It is ours, the taxpayers. Learn it, please.

    • Radegunda

Why would Obama raise his voice and pound on a theme so obvious as the need for infrastructure (which no one denies)?
That isn’t really his point. Listen to his sneering tone when he talks about people who “think they’re smart” or take pride in working hard to build their businesses. His point is to demean individual enterprise and initiative. He’s also implying that people with businesses don’t deserve what they earned, and that he will take more of it away and “spread it around” it to his cheering supporters who envy them. He’s arguing for a system where “somebody else” — specifically, a leviathan government — decides which businesses will succeed (or at least be temporarily propped up; see Solyndra et al.) and which will be crushed.

    • Larry W

I heard the whole speach several times. The president was saying to the crowd those guys are no better or deserving than “you”. He was saying oh that “rich” business owner where does he get off saying he’s so smart. Without gov’t (he then lists several governmental services) he wouldn’t be so successful. The words and tone cannot be taken out of context…he meant what he said! And yes it’s an insult!

Hate to break it to the career hamburger flipper (note at one time I was one)…but business people are extraordinary. They take risks, many fail, some have short successful runs, very very few last a long time. Obama would never understand what it’s like not to collect a paycheck, what it’s like to pay taxes quarterly. What this entitled welfare loving community organizer who I will have to call President of the United States for another few months doesn’t understand is that those roads DO NOT get built unless people like business owners exist. Being a recent member of the 1 percent, I am among the group that pays over 30% of the cost of that road (as far as federal money is concerned) while those in the bottom 50% pay virtually nothing. Yet I’m not paying m fair share!

Being a business owner is generally a short-term highly demanding job There is no overtime when we work 75 hours a week, no taxpayer funded pensions, no mandatory breaks….a business owner’s lfe is his/her business. There is no real vacation.

Small business is essential not just for the owners; but employees. Job growth comes from the entrepreneurship. When the economy is going right 50% are employed in this sector. Without robust small business gowth there are no jobs and tax revenues. If Obama wants to continue to burden this sector, job growth will be stale. The small business owner can elieviate risk by shrinking their business, and laying off people. Why expand when the president tells us he wants to raise your taxes by over 10%? Currently the federal government is marginally a 37.45% partner, Obama wants to increase that to 42 5%; and I Haven’t touched Obamacare.

A word to the wise liberals….do not bite the hand that feeds you!

President; they are doing just that! Come November the voters can either choose to Celebrate the successful business owner or resent. Obama is on the resentment side…let me assure you this is the man reason this recovery as so anemic!

  • Steven

I do really want the the government to help, BY GETTING OUT OF MY WAY!!!

    • GrizzlyMom

Great Steven. And if your business catches on fire I hope you can put it out with your OWN water supply and team of fire fighters. And don’t get mad because remember “you want the government to get out of your way”.

      • K.M.

You’re attacking an argument that you just made up. No one ever said that we want no government, just limited government. Besides, ever hear of a volunteer fire department?

  • John

Yes, government secured the loans (bonds) for public works projects, but like all loans they have to be paid back with interest (higher future taxes.) Many of those public works projects are unnecessary and really should be paid by for the individual states. The federal government only recently started indirectly subsidizing states for: fire departments, roadways, police, education, etc. First, they take money collected from successful states and borrowed from China, then skim a third of that money to pay for its bloated bureaucracy and employees, then send what’s left to the states that have mismanaged their finances, then they collect more money from taxes to pay for the borrowed money (plus interest) that paid for last year’s projects. Individual federal departmental future budgets are increased by overspending in the present – a clear disincentive to save money. This is why a real businessman is desperately needed in the White House, not someone who doesn’t have a basic understanding of how the economy actually works. Yes, we all benefit from infrastructure, education, etc. – but those have already been (or will be) overpaid for by the 53% of Americans who are the taxpayers.

  • Griffin

What a beautiful video! Thank you for BUILDING it!

  • Steven L

Anyone who started a business truly BUILT that business. Without their idea of starting it, it wouldn’t be.

  • Dennis

I love how all of the liberals providing excuses for this president and pretend to tell us what we heard him say live. The obvious flaw in the presidents marxist statement is this, does anyone doubt that the roads, bridges, teacher and what not would not exist if the entrepeuears had not decided to gamble on starting a business. Hell where I grew up if a road was need to build the entreprenuer would just build the damn road his/her self!

The bottom line is the Amercan people made one big mistake when they put that M a r x i s t in the WH. They got caught up in history and a corrupt MSM tellling them if you do not vote for this man than you are a racist. The American people have learned from their mistake and will never let a corrupt MSM tell them who to vote for again. The corrupt MSM put that clueless liar in the WH. He has done nothing but rape the American people of the reminding wealth they have.

This election will be about Big government vs Big Freedom.

Do you vote for Big Government guiding you around like sheep?

Do you vote for Big Freedom and working hard to giving our country back to WE The People.

Thank you so much for your wonderful blog. It’s so nice to see something positive at a time when Obama seems to be doing all that he can to destroy the pride that Americans have in our great country. I started my own successful business and had it for 9 years, but sold it in 1989. Although I didn’t have Obama to contend with, I know what it is like to work hard and put in long hours, knowing that just because I go home, the work is never done and every customer is my boss. I would still have that business if not for poor health, but appreciate what you and your mom are doing for our country.

  • Our government was built by tax payers. we should be ashamed of our selves. Our fore fathers warned us of what was important. every year their is one of the articles changed or misinterpreted. The last government that i know who directly helped us was France in the revolution. The other country who really made us into the strong nation we became in the 60s and 70s was USSR (Russia) WE HAD TO BE STRONG our new government Carter gave back the panama canal what a strtegic blunder subic bay in the Phillipenes was given back by Clinton of course how would he know it was the most strategic base in the far east. Then there was another Okinawa the biggest Blunder of all miliatary leaving funny how a democratic President always gives away evrything we have paid for in lives or money obama finally caved and said our troops would move to Guam The Chinese ar estatic other than south Korea we are really at a disadvantage should China decide to attack Taiwan or Japan . North korea could launch A MISSLE AT SEOUL AND TIE OUR ONLY GROUND TROOPS UP. ALWAYS A DEMOCRAT GIVING AWAY THINGS WE PAID FOR . THE ONLY THING OUR GOVERNMENT BUILDS IS IN THE TREASUREY TO SUPPORT THE LAZY PEOPLE SO THEY CAN LIVE LIKE THE PEOPLE THAT PAY TAXES . hALF OF THOSE PEOPLE DESERVE IT THE OTHER HALF SHOULD GP TO WORK THEY TO COULD BUILD SOMETHING. sARAH WOULD YOU PLEASE RUN FOR VICE PRESIDENT AGAIN WE NEED TO PUT A PEP IN rOMNEYS STEP aLITTLE MOVE IN HIS GROOVE YOU DO JUST THAT ANY WHERE YOU GO THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP I HAVE ALL YOUR BOOKS. IWAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO VISIT AL THESE PLACES IN THE M ARINE CORP YOUR FAITHFUL FOLLOWER

  • David

Ummm, Mr Obama, those roads and bridges and infrastructure? They were built by and belong to the American taxpayer. They are NOT your property as a politician.

  • grayjohn

Getting help getting started does not mean you owe the socialist demon Obama ANYTHING.
The other thing Americans are really great at is helping each other. Getting a loan, or some money from dad to start a business does not make it anyone else’s property or entitle anyone else to the credit or the profit or the success. Only a retarded marxist or progressive douche thinks that way.

  • Bristol, you are a true Patriot and your son is absolutely adorable. Keep up the good work!!!

  • Babci Cathy

My Dad opened a used car lot in 1949. He had zero education. His parents had no money…they lived in the same house for 70 years before dying at the ages of 96 and 98. Dad raised 7 children and put 5 of us through college. He never asked anyone for anything. We NEVER had health insurance. He paid every doctor, dental and hospital bill with CASH.

My Dad is now 96 years old. He will be voting for the FIRST time in his life this November. He wants to tell President Obama… I built this and I’m proud.

Can you tell how proud I am?

  • riffraff

    “Help along the way.”

I think not. My wife and I and our partner did it all ourselves. We never applied for (or was offered) any government help. Our current President has never worked for himself…he has always had everything handed to him, one way or another. It’s sickening. He hates capitalism and, I believe, he hates America. It’s the only thing that explains his actions. If the population votes him in for another term, America as we know it is doomed.

  • MotherBush,
The previous mess that you talk about was created by your democratic congress that was in the
majority for six years. Also remember Dodd/Frank. And it was the democrats that would
not put regulations on Fannie/Mae and Freddy/ Mac. Giving out all those loans to people
who could no way afford the houses they were getting into was the cause of the housing bubble
    to bust.
Bush in his second year on was trying to have regulation put on these bank and the democrats
blocked it the six years they were in the majority and the two years that the Republicians did not
have enough majority to get it through because of 4 Republican that voted with the democrats.

  • Thank you, Bristol, for reminding Americans of what we still have, even after the last four years; the American ability to dream, build, and prosper – which supports, envelops, and pushes us all onward; no matter which political party is in charge!
    I’m very proud of you!

  • Robert

I’ve spent the last seven years building a photographic studio by myself. Working as a plumber during the day and pounding nails at night and on weekends. It’s close to done but if Obama wins another term….. I think I it will just be the worlds coolest man cave. I don’t see the use in making more money just to have it taxed away. BTW, Mr. Obama, Government was the biggest factor in taking 7 years. Government didn’t help me, it would have been fast to have used a wagon through the woods without government interference than using the roads with all the regulations. Get out of my life and let me create jobs.

  • politicsisdirty

Good job Bristol. Wish you all the luck and God Bless.

    • Ginger

Bristol….great work…this is the kind of thing Romney needs for his campaign..God bless you and you family..wish we were in a different mind set in America..your Mom is the kind of person we need for President or at least in a conservative administration.

    • Lizzie

It has now been proven that Romney’s campaign DELIBERATELY manipulated the President’s speech, slicing it up to say exactly what Romney wanted. That’s called a LIE. And Romney’s the biggest liar the presidential campaign has seen since Nixon re-ran.

  • jl

I built my computer repair business…i’m the one that drove 100 miles each week hanging up fliers (that i designed and printed myself) in Krogers, Cubs, various markets and advertised my business. It took 3 years to get enough customers where i could feel like i was contributing to the household. I’m the one who knocked on doors and introduced myself to prospective clients. NO ONE ELSE helped me with this, i did all of it on my own for the last 9 years. And the entire time i never ONCE went on government assistance, i did it MYSELF.
Thanks for the slap in the face from a President who just doesn’t get it.

    • Mark

You drove 100 miles each day on roads that you yourself built and maintain? And you repair conputers using skills like reading and math that you taught yourself with no government help? And when a customer refused to pay, you sued him in a court system that you yourself set up and run? And your business is protected by a one-man police force and fire department that is wholly-owned and -operated by just you? Amazing! You really did do it with no help from anyone else, especially the government! Congrats!

  • Richard Sandgren

The question is that if the people who own small businesses did not build them and the only reason they have them is because the government gave them to them then why doesn’t everyone have one? Where these business owners the only ones in line the day the government was handing them out? If these business owners are not smart or hard working people Mr. Obama how exactly did they get these businesses and why are there so many people that don’t own one? You have increased the welfare roles faster than any president in the countries history. Why aren’t those people starting there own bussinesses (other than street pharmaceuticals) with all the help they are getting?

  • tillurdizzy

Independent hard working people are what Obama and the Democrats fear most. We don’t need them, and they know it. Obama is no Slick Willie, and he is not good at hiding his true agenda. He blurts out his Marxist ideology when off teleprompter. In some ways, maybe it was good we had him in office to wake up a bunch of people to what the Democrats have been working toward for the last 50 years. Now that we’re awake, lets get that socialist out of office!

  • I started my own business! I’m a science teacher and developed two science programs and I set up either my Big Canyon Balloon or Orbit Earth Expo programs in school gyms and teach either earth science or space science. My canyon program uses a huge inflatable canyon model (40ft long and 15 tall) which I received a patent on. My space program uses a 16 ft inflated globe and moon to scale! Both programs have been wildly successful as I take them all around Texas. Take a look at my site. It’s very unique and hands on learning. One thing I have noticed at every school, no one from the government was there building my business. I’ve built it myself!

  • I am a stay at home mom of three boys and started a small business while at home. It has taken off and I built it with the help of God. I praise Him!

  • CT

Roads. Freeways. These are the thing none of you built, to which the president was referring in his speech. You can’t possibly be so dense as to think he would say you didn’t build a business that you obviously did indeed build. The man was referring to INFRASTRUCTURE. You did not dirctly build the infrastructure that allows your businesses to be successful. Taxpayer money given to city, state, and te federal governmt built roads, and freeways, and the Internet. Come on people, drop the rhetoric and lets pull together.

  • ikahana

Dear Bristol’s Ghost Writer – The President never said that and two seconds of research would prove that. Like it or not, no man or woman is an island. We depend on one another, just as the real Bristol (and not the person who writes this blog) depends on cameramen and reality TV shows and her Mama to cash in on being an uneducated teenage Mom. Judging on the parenting skills broadcast across the country (by the way, very impressed that the gigglefest over your son’s use of the word “faggot” continues that fine family tradition) your time would be better spent taking some parenting classes before there is yet another generation of media attention seeking, ignorant and crude Palins embarrassing our country.

  • Becca

“President Obama recently said, ‘If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.'”

Wow! Just Wow! Can you possibly fabricate any more lies? Here is what he actually said, in context:

“If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together. There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own. I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service. That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires.”

  • sue jeffers

It is a shame that you were unable to understand the sentences spoken by president obama. or at least are pretending not to. amazing for someone so young to have built the infrastructure in your town – which is what the president was speaking of. please stop lying (or please take some remedial english courses, whichever applies)

    • Joanne Wroe

Sue Jeffers: You are in denial if you really believe Obama meant roads & bridges. If he had left out the words, “if you’ve got a business”… then, yes, the rest would apply to roads and bridges. But the fact that he then spoke about “a business” before saying “you didn’t build that” proves which he was talking about. There’s a remedial course waiting for YOU.

    • TheresaAK

Cult mentality will not allow your eyes to be opened, or your ears to hear…

  • Ron Lussier

Wait, do you not understand that the president was talking about building ROADS? You might want to get away from the crazy right-wingers and read the entirety of what the President said in context.

    • Steve

Look it’s clear from the uproar that the President struck a nerve with his You Didn’t Build That speech. If you need to parse his words down to each character and comma then you are missing the point. The point is the President disdains business and businesspeople.

He struck a nerve in this speech because his disdain was on full display. His attitude toward business came through loud and clear. Yes, if you want to parse words and phrases you can find different meanings. What is unmistakeable is the President’s constant railing aganst business and success that we have endured for the past three and a half years.

      People are tired of that.

    • Vote

Mr. Obama was perfectly clear. He did not mince words nor was he taken out of context!!!

What WE understand it that it was our taxes as small business owners and our dedicated employees’ taxes that funded the projects that Big Obama is taking credit for.

Government and government projects did NOT build America.

Government is the result of working Americans. Without the small businesses and risk takers, we would be nothing more than a large Cuba. Cuba is a nation in perpetual decline. People suffering for but a loaf of bread.

The opportunity for the small gal to make it on her own is what separates us from the despots of the Socialist (Communist lite) world.

Government did not create jobs and opportunity in America, Mr. Obama. It stayed the hell out of the way! That is why America is different.

      Until you!

Far too many countries failed trying the Obama model.

Obama doesn’t get it… Or worse… HE DOES!!!

He will feel the wrath of working America in November!

      • GrizzlyMom

We will see. Polls released today show the President leading Romney by 6 points nationally and 8 points in the battleground states. Clearly Bristol’s videos have not have much effect.

      • Mark

Sorry, government projects DID build America to what it is today. Our highways, airports and communication lines were ALL built by government projects. No matter the what business, they are all dependent on them. Our country would be “squat” without them.
I live in a region that is being redefined by nano-technology, thanks to the business-government partnership to which the President refers in his speeches. The government has assisted with funding for one of the first nano-tech labs in the WORLD and a new nano chip fab factory in this area. Aside from that, has given grants to 2 of our local higher ed institutions to produce nano-tech programs that lead the country (U-Albany and RPI). I am seeing it 1st hand and it is a win-win for all parties involved.

  • Bill Wheaton

You said, “President Obama recently said, ‘If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.'”.

That is a falsehood. You know that it is a falsehood. You know that it is not even close to what our President said or what he meant. Yet after you knew it. you still went ahead and said it and repeated the same lie that has been going around.

Have you no feeling of shame for bearing such wicked and false witness? You should if you had any sense of right and wrong. I mourn for our country and our world when such an act as you have committed is praised by churls.

    • Cynthia

      Dear Mr. Wheaton,
I have heard and watched the speech delivered by President Obama several times myself and can assure you that the quote is without error. I am completely astonished that you could have heard and watched the same speech that I did and have a differing viewpoint. The words are the actual words. There is no falsehood about it. Someone must have tricked you in a terrible way and edited the broadcast either just for your viewing or for your area. This is a serious matter. No one should ever be able to record and edit a speech in order to mislead the public. I hope that you will report this crime to the appropriate officials in your area.
Best wishes to you as you discover the truth,

      Mrs. L

  • Adam

Sorry to let things like ‘facts’ get in the way, but here’s what the President actually said. When you and your handlers get around to reading and interpreting it, you’re free to respond…

If you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, “Well, it must be ‘cause I was just so smart.” There are a lot of smart people out there. “It must be because I worked harder than everybody else.” Let me tell you something: There are a whole bunch of hard-working people out there.

If you are successful somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet, so then all the companies could make money off the Internet. The point is, is that, when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together.

    • Jonathan

Adam, you just proved her point. HE DID SAY IT. And he’s saying SOMEONE had to give you help or you wouldn’t succeed which is the biggest pile of s**t I’ve ever heard. Well, I started multiple businesses from SCRATCH and for a most of them, nobody ever gave me help. It didn’t require roads or anything else the government created and he INSULTS all hard working business owners to say that.

In fact, I started my biggest business OUTSIDE OF THE USA, in a more capitalist country, and still am required to pay US taxes as long as I keep the citizenship I am about to renounce. The USA has the HIGHEST tax rates in the developed world. Europe is lower, even “Communist” China has lower personal and corporate tax rates.

But the main reason I took my business and jobs overseas and will never return them to America is because of regulations. The average restaurant faces a half dozen frivolous lawsuits a year, and is unable to freely hire and fire as they wish without worrying about more lawsuits.

Then again, America is about to collapse in five to ten years or enter a civil war, so I’ll just be glad I took my businesses with me and moved abroad. Keep up the socialism, and soon there won’t be any wealth to tax. When the welfare checks stop going out, I predict chaos on a scale unimaginable. America has no homogenous ethnicity, religion, culture, or even way of life to unify it. So when the luxuries run out, it’s game over.

  • Carrstone

Great stuff, Bristol. Even from where I live, in Germany, I can feel the anger. The President’s assertion scores high marks on two counts: it’s patronizing and reveals delusions of patronage; beware though, droit de signeur is next!

  • dumdedumdum

I agree with this blog post in that sixth paragraph where Bristol writes “Let’s give the President the job!” I’m voting for him too.

    • Don

If you are voting for Obama, then you are a service to your “name”. Why would anyone vote for Obame to continue in a job that he has performed terribly! The typical Obama voter wants the government to support them and blames business for all their problems. They love unions, government regulations and control, and expect government to make the rich pay for their livlihoods. You deserve better and you will get it, like it or not, after November and Romney is elected and when our country is taken back by the people who care about it!

  • Alex

How desperately, pathetically low we have sunk when any semblance of rudimentary intelligence is forbidden from entering public discourse. I am not a Democrat or Republican, but I have got to side with the left on this — perhaps the President, in the midst of a live speech, misphrased what he waas trying to say, and I think as a country that prides itself on being so great, we need to maybe exercise some “forgiveness” and admit we understand what he *meant* to say. Looking at the quote in context, he OBVIOUSLY was implying that business does not succeed in a vacuum — it thrives in a larger community that is intrinsically linked to public projects (such as roads, highways, bridges, ports, etc.).

So I ask the right wing: please, for the love of all that is good and decent in the world, admit that yes, you are indeed smart enough to understand what the President was saying, and while the literal phrasing was subpar, you get the idea.

As a side note, I suppose we can assume Mitt Romney loves Obamacare, since back in 2010 he said he was a fan of it? Oh wait, I’m sure there’s more “nuance” to that, right GOP?

    • Mary Ellen Smith

Ya, like we have 57 states….The guy is inept…period ! He did say….”.YOU DIDN’T BUILD THAT”. That is not what he meant???? O, another one of those MISPHRASES…………PHFFTTTT….

“I truly truly wish we could divide this land in half…let them live the way they want too and leave the rest of us alone. ”
You have NO idea how many times I have heard that from my NON-Liberal friends!! We are happy to give up any one of four cities, (to start with—more later!), like that cancerous tumor Chicago, (only the folks living there believe it has any value to anyone outside the city). How about one of the others the Liberals have already ruined? NYC? LA? Detroit? Clearly you can see the fruits of the Liberals non-labor there!! LOL. Republicans are greedy and self-serving you say? I thought the people that stay home, (paid for by someone else), all day having babies for a living, using free cell phones to arrange their evening government food cook outs, were greedy, self-serving Democrats. I can’t wait to see what type of government they are going to collectively create! No one will want to work!! No Police, no Firemen, no military!! LOL You had better leave things well enough alone and just let the greedy, self-serving Republicans continue to support and protect all those Democrats! I do work! I want to keep my wages. Is that wrong? America does need to keep working though…. millions of Democrats on welfare are depending on us. Don’t forget about all of the illegal Democrats coming across our southern border every day as well. We greedy self-serving Republicans have to continue to support them as well.

  • AJ

Love it, Bristol. Keep up the good work. The liberal mindset is being exposed. Little logic to that way of thinking. You and those who are sending their pictures to you are showing what hard work has done. Those who claim the government or something has made all this possible are not thinking clearly. Where does the government get money to build roads and bridges? Answer: taxation. Who pays taxes? Answer: hard working people. Who really built the roads and bridges? Answer: hard working people who paid taxes to the government to hire other hard working people to build roads and bridges.

  • Randy Park

What Obama doesn’t get; is that it took a business to create the first job. That created the tax base to fund the government. That build the infrastructure that makes this country thrive. Business make the money, government takes the money. It’s that simple, and he’s that dumb.

  • Jeff Chesen

For those of you who think President Obama was attacking American entrepreneurship, please explain how Obama’s speech (taken out of context) is any different than Mitt Romney’s Opening Ceremonies speech at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8Yp9SVSWJU):

“You Olympians, however, know that you didn’t get here solely on your own power. For most of you, loving parents, sisters or brothers encouraged your hopes. Coaches guided. Communities built venues and organized competitions. All Olympians stand on the shoulders of those who lifted them.”

Of course, this is not the totality of Romney’s speech. He was not attempting to take anything away from the athletes. It is clear if you consider the full context of the speech:

“Tonight we cheer the Olympians, who only yesterday were children themselves. As we watch them over the next 16 days, they affirm that our aspirations, and those of our children and grandchildren, can become reality. We salute you, Olympians—both because you dreamed and because you paid the price to make your dreams real. You guys pushed yourself, drove yourselves, sacrificed, trained and competed time and again, winning and losing. You Olympians, however…”

Romney’s comments, taken out of context, appear to deny credit for the athletes. Within context he recognizes many of the factors that helped create an Olympian.

Think about that when you take President Obama’s comments out of context and claim that he harbors a faux hostility toward American small business.

    • Ah, Jeff, you lost credibility after the first 2 sentences. With all due respect, blow it out your you-know-what. There is just no way to take that comment out of context. It was a crystal clear as can be.

Olympians are such a different ball game there’s just no comparison. They HAVE to be supported and backed by people with money because they have to devote their time to training and practice. Hello.

    • Piscean Gal

      THANK YOU, Jeff!!!

    • Deirdre

Olympians must depend on their parents and family and everyone else at a very young age – bad comparison!

      • Julian

UNLESS of course, they are aborted, so that the parents won’t be, as the Kenyan jackass says, ‘punished with a child’. The fact that any lib can even be so brain dead as to compare a person who trains for a sporting event, with someone who builds a business or a trade from the ground up and hands that on to future generations, shows just how detached from reality they are.

    • Shaw Shaw

Let’s see Romney says “Let’s Cheer , the parents, coaches and communities that lifted them’

Not sure where you get “government” out of that. Community is not government., neither is your family

Obama full context in his speech is worse then the “you didnt’ build that” snippet. He claims the roads were built then businesses and customers arrived. When in fact, the people arrived with their need for economic activity, then businesses developed from their need, THEN taxes were appled to their economic activity, then the roads were built………from the benefit of the businesses existing.

    • Halle

Thank you for the intelligent comment. Republicans apparently cannot win by attacking Democrats’ real ideas, so they take statements out of context and lie about the rest.

  • M Bachmann, humble Constitutional Authority

Government does not earn or make money. WE THE PEOPLE earn and make the money.
If you really believe the whole of those two sentences, then you don’t understand even the basics of monetary exchange.
Go to a library, and read a macro econ textbook, or attend the bonehead econ course at a community college.
Extra credit: take the bonehead business course, then come back to this blog and apologize for helping elect Cheney/Bush *twice*.

  • 007SAYWHAT

Pres O’s solution is to build our economy from the middle out or even from the bottom up. WHAT???!!!

What poor person ever gave you a permanent job? What was your starting wage? Who out there really believes unions and the like should be able to take over control from the risk takers and investors. That’s basically what happened with GM with a price tag of 50 Billion. That’s about $1500 per man, woman and each child in your family. Who came out, The union. Business and investors were thrown under the Obama bus They have paid a small portion back but will never satisfy the full debt. Oh, Remember CASH FOR CLUNKERS? That’s where they took the cars, drained the oil, poured chemicals in the engine, then ran the engine to totally destroy it. Then they crushed the car. Overkill anyone. Who thinks this stuff up, and you can convince me that these people are capable of getting our economy going???!!! Why didn’t the EPA jump in and have an investigation for car abuse.

Let’s talk about race issues and the white house. You have the DOJ totally out of control. You have a Pres that mandates immigration laws to be disregarded, because he feels it is the right thing to do.
He has spent more time defending professor Gates interfering with police work, and his wanna be son Travon than he has spent on meeting with his get America to work idiots. Have you seen the recent pictures of Travon.

Friends tell me that he is inept but they fear Romney might take benefits away. I won’t take an issue on that cause I don’t like to predict the future without references from the past. This I do predict. another 4 years of this divide and conquer, fantasy ideology, picking winners and losers and just flat out lack of judgement will make us at best, just another second rate nation. We require someone who can bring and manage workable solution to this economy that Obama is content to leave us in. He has to think it gives him job protection to have to rely on him while appearing to be the savior to the down and out. It’s simple, HOW MUCH WORSE WERE YOU THAN 4 YEARS AGO. WHAT MAKES YOU THINK HE CAN GET JOBS GOING IN AFTER 4 YEARS OF THIS!!

My last thought, If you owned a company that was worth a million and it was in distress, YOU HAD A CHANCE OF LOSING IT ALL, who would you hire to bring it back. Obama or Romney. There is a reasonable chance the fortunes and property you currently possess are on the line. Instead of thinking what a qualified manager will take think in terms what he will save. While Obama gives chump change to the needy they are losing their home. Mr. Romney, please fix this economy so I can work and keep my house.

  • Kimberly Geraci

I support Bristol!! this is a country of free speech isn’t it?? That’s if Obama don’t take that from us next!

  • Additionally, an important factor in operating a successful business is creativity — in developing & marketing a product or service, often in a new &/or improved way to be competitive & offer value to the customer. All of which Barry & most leftists have no concept of.

Obuma overlooks the fact that roads, bridges & public schools (local & state responsibilities, <5% federal budget), are available to all. And, there is no major voice arguing against those nor calling for anarchy.

Instead of all gov spending being ~40% of GDP, a more limited gov at 20-30% of GDP would lead to more prosperity. Limits include less regulating & bureaucracy, which should not exclude human safety (ie active danger) & honesty (ie no fraud nor slander), whereas now there are so many other reasons for regs, including the preservation of many non-human organisms.

  • MiddleRoader

Thanks, Bristol, for illustrating Obama’s point! The federal government subsides large portions of the fishing industy; many commercial fishing operations are exempt from taxes (kind of like welfare, no?). Just last month Alaskan gov Parnell asked US Dept of Commerce to declare a Chinook salmon fishery disater in 2 areas, which, if approved, could result in federal assistance. Entrepreneurs are encouraged to build fishing businesses when they have a federal safety net for poor harvests. I have no idea whether Todd Palin benefitted directly from any federal program or partnership. However, I suspect he did benefit indirectly, from government regulations on overfishing, pollution, etc. and infrastructure paid for by taxes and government. If he travelled by plane, even private plane, between Bristol Bay and Wasilla or wherever, he probalby filed a flight plan with the FAA, and benefitted from their air traffic control systems. This is a good thing! This is part of what makes America exceptional!

  • x1134x

Um, if you built it all, why does the engine to your boat say “YAMAHA”, I’m guessing you had HELP from the japanese. Without their help you’d be paddling your way out there.

  • Kudo’s on your post!! I’m not trying to emphasize that the govt. hasn’t done things to help American citizens thrive using our tax dollars to build infrastructures or provide some services. What I’d like to convey is that the govt. couldn’t have done those things without the help from hard working individuals who contribute those tax dollars and entrusted the govt. to disperse it appropriately. It’s a two-way street as he pointed out; however, my point is…”we the people” made that decision to allow the govt. to do so. Otherwise, if we had not entrusted the govt. with our monies, as an intellectual society, we would’ve founded and maintained private industry to build infrastructure and services. Regarding his statement, “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that.” Plus tossing in the whole govt./internet hoopla jargon. I’ve pondered his speech for the last half hour or so and there’s just something dirty about it. Almost like insulting the American citizens’ intelligence, by saying, back-off and let the govt. do their job. Personally, I’m ill stricken at the way our govt. is managing our hard earned tax dollars with their frivolous spending. Privatize more industry, less govt.!

  • Bristol, thanks again for this blog and getting the message out. We need more people out there to share their stories. It’s a sad time when half of America doesn’t understand the concept of who really is behind the success of a business.

On that note, my company Financial Bin came out with a book that highlights 28 entrepreneurs who built their own companies. It’s called ‘Entrepreneur Intervention’ — which is something America needs right now. Check it out — http://financialbin.com/buy-entrepreneur-intervention/

  • Robbie

    Bo Palin’s !!! Ya Common sense !
