Man Comes “Back to Life” After Being in Vegetative State for 12 Years: Has a Jaw Dropping Story to Tell

When Martin Pistorius was 12, he came down with a mysterious disease that slowly weakened and finally paralyzed him. The doctors couldn’t help him. They eventually gave up and told his parents he would be a vegetable until he eventually died.

His parents took him home and waited for him to die. But he didn’t.

They fell into a routine. Martin’s dad dressed him every day and took him to a care facility, then brought him home at the end of the day to feed him, give him a bath, and put him to bed. He woke up every 2 hours to turn his son so he wouldn’t get bed sores.

A couple years later, something amazing happened: Martin started to wake up! But only in his mind. He slowly gained consciousness, but couldn’t communicate or control his body. For years he was aware of what was happening around him, but he couldn’t do anything to show people he was still there.

Eventually, through therapy and hard work, he learned to communicate through a computer program, then he was able to speak and move his head and arms. Now, years later, Martin is back to normal life except for his wheelchair. He’s married,lives in England, and wrote a book about those years called Ghost Boy.

When people were saying he should just be allowed to die, he kept on living.

What if his parents had made that choice? What would have been the last thing he’d known? His mom even told him point-blank, “I hope you die.” Can you imagine hearing that from your mother and not being able to respond?

This story tells me so powerfully that life is not ours to take away. God gives life, and only He can take it away. You never know what miracle might be ahead!
